I’m someone who has self harmed, the definition I use is. Harm on self. It’s hurting your body on the outside. Something you do to inflict pain on yourself. I agree with the definition you use

I have self harmed most of my life. I feel like not being allowed to show emotion as a child contributed to it. I have learned to surpress everything for so long eventually I blow up .It isn't as often anymore but it is how I cope.

So this may seem like a dumb question, but recently my mental health has gotten really bad and I’ve started to self harm worse than usual. Anyways my question is. When someone, like a psychiatrist or doctor asks, “Do you ever have thoughts of harming yourself or others?“ Would you only say yes to that question if your talking suicide (I’m not suicidal btw), or would that apply to self harm too. So, does that question apply to self harm, or suicide only? I’m going to see a psychiatrist soon and I really need to know what they mean by this question so I can answer it to the best of my ability.

*So I’ve been sort of confused about this- if you self harm does that mean you have depression or another mental illness? Is doing self harm a mental illness?*

Hi! As of right now, self harm is not yet considered as its own diagnosis, but around 15-20% of people who self harm do not meet the criteria for any mental health disorder

What if you have a knee injury and you don't do anything to help it heal, could that be described as self harm because you are deliberately causing your knee possibly more damage by not letting it heal? Is deliberately not avoiding getting hurt playing sports or whatnot considered self harm? Does it have to be you directly doing the harm? For example, you see someone coming in to tackle you but you don't dodge because you want to be injured. Could that be considered self harm? Cause personally, a lot of the time I just don't care about my well being physically so I don't avoid getting hurt deliberately in situations I can clearly see will hurt me. Would that count as self harm? Because I'm still hurting myself intentionally maybe just not directly. What about other things like head banging, hitting yourself and or walls, throwing yourself into walls and so on without serious injury (like an equivalent to light cutting that doesn't cause scars but is still inflicting pain). Could that be considered self harm? Not mad just curious as to what would be considered self harm, a part from things that cause actual damage to tissue or skin, and especially if it's just to inflict pain but not damage?

yeah, i think most of what you said is indeed considered self harm, and if it isn’t considered self harm it should still be treated as such as it isn’t a good thing lol.
