Wondering how it compares to Korea. I've had great shabu shabu in Korea and I've had bad shabu shabu... the problem in Korea is if you go with someone who has the Korean BBQ mentality of "I'm going to cook the meat for everyone" and they dump it all in. Nooo! That's not how it's done!

Of course it's better in Japan that's where Shabu Shabu originated from

(This will tell you I'm no spring chicken) In the 1970s in Tranna, I finished a post grad degree so to celebrate, I took 5 friends to Tanaka of Tokyo on Bay just south of Bloor. It was the first time I had Shabu Shabu (Shabu, Shabu for six please.). Had never had raw beef presented before but, fortified by too much saké, we proceeded to enjoy and devastate all of the food on the table. With so much saké inside us, we proceeded to sing, from Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Mikado, Miya Sama. It brought the house down with the adjoining walls opening revealing terror struck diners. A great intro to Shabu Shabu and a fondly remembered evening. Thanks for reminding me.

Hey Simon and Martina, any plans to expend the content of your videos? I know you just moved but at the moment it's just Eat your Sushi and food videos and I'd love to see more of what you planned originally (visiting temples, more of Japan and not just popular foods a lot already know/have had). It just feels a bit repetitive at the moment, I'd love to see Japan from your perspective in general.

+Cervelo R5 All you can eat places also use cheaper cuts of meat as well. Still delicious though.
@Stephanie-nk9oh8 жыл бұрын
+Cervelo R5 the amount you pay is usually a fixed average price because a lot of people eat less than what they pay their moneys worth for. plus the meat was cut very thin so it was very inexpensive. So they're paying say, $20 for a meal when they only ate about $10 worth. Some people eat way over what they pay for, and some eat way less. So in the end it averages out
@eatyourkimchi8 жыл бұрын
+Cervelo R5 they also start to get reeeeeaaaalll slow at delivering your meat if you eat a lot. Some places will just "oops, get real busy" and forget to bring you your tray after you called them. And there is an all you can drink soda-pop station that I'm sure people fill up on too.

Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki are two different cuisines, and Sukiyaki is much much older. Shabu Shabu is relatively new, started in '50s, and popularized in '60s, which origin was the Chinese hot pot. But interestingly Shabu Shabu has spread to other Asian countries quickly including China as well.
@dianabuzderewicz44398 жыл бұрын
+acatinny That's so interesting! I was about to insert my comment that this is just like Hot Pot for Chineses restaurants here in Canada. There's even more of a selection of broth, meat/vegetables and no time limit whatsoever.
@acatinny8 жыл бұрын
The main difference from Chinese hot pot is that Shabu Shabu's broth is at almost boiling point and the meat is so thinly sliced, which means it takes only a few seconds to be cooked, and all you have to do is to swish them a few times in the broth with your chop sticks. As the result, the meat stays softer than with other type of hot pot cooking. I think most of Japanese cook meet and veggies separately as it takes a little longer to cook veggies, and they bring down the temperature of broth.
