Ive never re-used head bolts. Its only 16 bucks or so for a new set. Better to be safe than sorry. Also, you can clean the surfaces with oven cleaner and/or degreaser. Anything left over just use a 6 inch block and some 1000 grit and go over it. Check out my video of re-doing my 7AFE. Head went back on with a mirror finish. Still running it hard and its been 3+ years since I did this..

Is it better to use a plastic scraper vs metal? I worry about scratching the surface of the head. Thanks for the videos. Replaced my water pump a few weeks ago and thought the head warped when it overheated cause I was slowly losing coolant. Turns out the water pump I put in is leaking/bad. Just ordered an AISIN pump instead of the Gates on I had and hoping for better results.

Metal. You'll never get it off with a plastic one. Keep the scarper as flat as possible so you don't gouge the head gasket mating surface.

Yes, with that many miles I think it's about time to change your transmission fluid. 4AFE and 7Afe are all the same,, even carburetor cylinder head fit on injector block.. So you can buy any..

Lovely video... do you have one where you remove the head? I get a puff of smoke when I accelerate after engine braking down a hill... valve seals are bad right? Celica 94 with 7AFE has LPG.. is the LPG responsible for this?

When the timing belt breaks it may damage the valves depending on the design of the head. On this model Toyota, the valves have a "clearance" design so they will not hit the piston and be damaged. On some cars like my BMW they are designed with an "interference" fit and will damage the valves if there is a failure. This happened to my BMW but it wasn't a timing chain failure, I over reved the engine at the track by down shifting from 3rd to 2nd at 90 mph on accident.

@@Engineerboy100 the 4afe doesnt have the same valve clearance, does it? so 4afe ifbelt time broke it probably damage valves right? another question in my 4afe i hear some noise from the head, i guess camshaftand is more notice when motor is cold( its not valve ticking) the car pulls well. when its normal temperature you don´t hear the grinding noise your videos are awesome.. love from portugal

Do you have a video on checking the valve lash and adjusting clearances? I'd love to see a good one. I get some "blow by" from my oil filler cap and wanted to make sure my clearances are good. (Tho admittedly, my rings could be worn too.)

I don't think I've video taped it but to adjust the valve clearance on these cars you must measure and then change the spacers on the lifters.

Can I do the valve seals with out taking the head i change the head gasket like 2 years ago I got good pressure

You can change the seals, but you can't resurface the valve seats, they are on the inside, the head must come off for that....but changing the seals without taking the head off is tricky and requires some advanced techniques for keeping the valves from falling into the engine. I highly advice against it, especially if you are not experienced.

Different shops would charge various prices but a reasonable range would be $450 - $600 on average depending on the car. More for expensive cars ....

@@Engineerboy100 i agree , i have seen the video... In my case, i have an A4FE engine ov toyota Corolla 1998 , and only valve's seal are need to replace... I just don't have a blue smoke, i have a smell of baked oil when i release the gas pedal.. When i hit the gas nothing.. It means the depressurise in cylinder sucked oil trough damaged seal... But when i hit the gas it stops..

One question please; why do you specify 22ft-lb plus 2 x 90 degree turns when the Toyota service manual specify 44ft-lb? I'm merely curious and not doubting your method. Also do I need to retorque the cylinder head bolts after driving 1 000 km (break in)?

The most reliable way to check which engine you have is to look at the engine code that's etched into the block. It's located to the right of the exhaust manifold and is stamped vertically

@@alexmoraru9374 Hi the easiest way to identify a 1.8L(7afe) from a 1.6L(4afe) is only looking down the oil pan. The bigger engine have like a middle section of aluminum before the small steel oil pan. The smaller engine only have the steel pan at the bottom. This means is iron cast block and oil pan on the 1.6L, and on the 1.8L is iron cast block , aluminum middle piece and oil pan. hope this helps you.
