I was recently recommended by someone to consider Systema, since I'm already training in BJJ and Muay Thai. I'm only into martial arts for the purpose to better myself and to protect people I care about, not to intentionally cause harm. This martial art seems really interesting for my needs. I might try to find a school for this in the near future.

It's one of few reality based systems once you get into these long enough you'll be a different man the most dangerous system is an acronym called l.i.n.e. defies every law of Nato and the un possible once you learn more you will realize it's not about one system but many utilized as one another useful tactic is conjunctions

The understanding that I have is that Systema is one of the pre-communist indigenous fighting styles of Russia (very likely based on Cossack dancing, but who knows) “perfected” by the GRU, which has technically existed as long as there has been a Red Army, so it is probably very old.

Stalin was a fencer and a duellist. When he came into power he sent people throughout russia, eastern and western europe as well as asia to gather all the old martial knowledge they could and kept it for his personal bodyguards and special forces. The more modern styles became samba, the old sword/weapons based became systema. After the fall of communism ex military men started openly teaching it again.

thanks for this awesome history on what's becoming my favorite of fighting styles. I also like wing chun. could you do a video on that history. these eastern styles seem more effective than Western boxing of which I am familiar. maybe cause boxing here is just a sport.

@rasisback fortunately you don't have to they have systema intructors all over the world now But really , I would say buy some of the DVD's and start a study group.That is the hardest part to get mature people to committed to a study group and then go to Canada and study with Vald.I hear his classes are very affordable

Apart from propaganda in favor of the russian-orthodox church this video contains some nice clips showing systema techniques. Effective though systema might be, I doubt it really dates back to former than 20th century. There are no facts presented in this video that hint to the origins of systema. I suspect it has been developed within the spetznaz units and based on several martial arts. Anybody who can present verfiable references on systema's origins is welcome to give me a hint.

Hmmm...the art has a spiritual side and focuses on a peak physical condition.I thought it was a secular practical mixed art sorta thing, like Krav maga.

You get both. Systema is a spectrum. Sort schools are ultra secular and focusing on mechanics, others very spiritual & intuitive.

@zumer29 study cossack history. especally ukrainian cossacks the zaporoje. they were the moste liberal warriors in the world and that's why the basics of systema rely on being free! hope i could help
