When a designer asks the test knitters for the amount of yardage they used in making the item, how do you measure? Do you keep track of how much you are using while knitting? Or do you measure the yarn before hand?

This is so helpful! I’ve been trying to understand the world of test knitting for so long.

Can you explain whips and finished objects?

WIP = Work in Progress vs. finished objects which are completely finished items including any blocking that is needed. I hope this helps. Happy creating! :-)

What does the file hey send you look like? Is it a complete version with all sizes or with just the size you’re testing? I’m asking because I’m a designer but I haven’t yet tried using testers..

Hi, I am interested in pattern design but dont really know how the test knitting process works. I understand this is more necessary when you have different sizes for a pattern. However is it compulsory to do test knitting before being able to put the pattern for sale in for example in ravelry or etsy platforms? I see the point of test knitting as it's really a proof that the pattern is understandable and followed by a knitter but I wonder if this is a requisite in order to sell these platforms...or something you can skip. And If this is requisite, where do you get test knitters from? from ravelry platform forums or from where? Also would like to know if it's necessary that the patterns are technically edited before it reaches the test knitters or this editing is something you can skip?. I understand the technical editing is a separate and paid service but wonder how necessary this is as a prior step to test knitting or whether this is a requisite compulsory before offering a pattern for sale in the mentioned platforms Etsy or ralvery. Thanks in advance for answers!

What about the cost of the yarn? I always feel like people are making things as "test knits" (I see this in forums)that are made with very expensive yarn, as in, $20 plus per skein, and the pattern might call for at least 3 or more skeins. Crazy! I would assume designers for yarn companies that offer patterns, could be covering the yarn cost as well, but otherwise, you have to pay for it yourself? That's the expensive part! Thanks for the info though, I'm a little bit more in the know! I guess sometimes maybe people are just using the term when they are "testing" something for themselves or to seem like they are involved? Anyway... thanks!
