This. There have been so many times for me it's got so bad - my kitchen always suffers the most. It starts off with just having no energy to do much more than survive day to day, then it gets to the point I walk in, see the mess, and walk out immediately cursing my own laziness and inability to do simple tasks, which in turn makes me more depressed. It's a vicious cycle. For me it's usually broken by a manic cleaning phase which normally happens at ridiculous times like 3am. Not healthy at all. I'm trying to manage it, but still find myself slipping.

I've just recently started coming out of a 20 year chronic depression, and one of the big changes I made to help me get back on track with my life was hiring a cleaning company to deal with the accumulated mess that I had never been able to deal with myself. No longer having the stress of all that mess has gone a long way to improve my mental health.

Like yeah they're being super petty toward each other, but it's less divisive for the group dynamic than when they initially broke up. I think you hit the nail on the head. Joey just doesn't care enough about Kathy. We saw what he was like with Kate from the play so when he genuinely cares he's actually really sweet. Also, you know what I find more hilarious than Joey's ex not having a birthday for 3 years? The fact that Joey was in a relationship with ONE woman for 3 YEARS 😆 I feel like hoarders don't necessarily want it to be that way, things just get out of control and they don't know how to handle it. I'm not this bad but I understand a lot more how it can turn out that way because my mental health has made it difficult for me to get "simple" things done, like doing laundry and even washing myself. It's usually mental health or trauma related. But fun fact: The kitchen where Monica and Phoebe are working for the funeral is the same kitchen used for Monica and Ross's parents' house.

@@unknownchannwl When the relationships started to get more serious, that's when he usually ended them because he was too afraid his girlfriends would leave him later anyway (an early childhood trauma from the time when he felt his parents had left him all alone after their break up) so he didn't want to get too involved and feel very hurt in the end (he felt emotions very deeply inside him but he didn't want to show them to others, and he usually tried to escape dealing with his emotions by his alcohol/drug abuse)

To answer your hoarding question, my grandad began hoarding when my nan passed away. For him we figured it was a thrill, like an addiction, as well as a distraction from being alone. Now he's in a care home and we're left with 4 garages he rents which are full front to back with things he's found at car boot sales (basically massive second hand sales where a load of people show up with things they want to get rid of). So there can be so many triggers. I think it's very individual.

I worked for a hoarder for 4 years. It was worse than that girl. She was at that point where she would claim "I know where everything is". But she so often would go on a tirade looking for stuff she could not find. Other times would claim someone stole something. I still look back and wonder how well I kept my cool for that long. People would come up and ask me how I could deal with the smell.

OCD often causes the mess, I used to hoard a ton when I was a kid which I don’t know why I did cuz I was and still am extremely germs phobic, I think it’s mainly fear of getting rid of somthing knowing one day you might need it , ocd does cause a lot of useless panic especially when thinking about the future. I still hoard a little but only with clothes and I am waaay better at being able to throw stuff out and cleaning stuff and now I can’t stand it when things are out of place for more than 2 days.

Also hoarding tendencies here. It's under control at the moment, but in the past mine has also been trash, like Ross's girlfriend. But it wasn't because I liked it, it happened because I felt resentful that I was now supposed to be responsible for all the trash that was coming in or being generated, so I pretended it didn't exist until it got too big to pretend about, but also too big to take care of myself. Believe me, there was no comfort in the mess, and I don't think there is for most hoarders - there's usually something else going on underneath, and the mess is just an outward symptom. Luckily I had a couple of my own Monicas who came over, saw how I needed help, and selflessly gave it to me. Out of respect for their time and efforts I've been able to keep things in order ever since.

A lot of people don't hoard because they like it- sometimes things just accumulate over time, especially during times of stress and then the people become so overwhelmed because they don't even know where to start to clear the mess around them so they just leave it. For other people, they keep things because they have trouble letting go and see sentimental value in their belongings.
