I have a strange noise from the zetec engine in my mk1 ford fiesta and i think i know what it is.
Lets investigate.

Use a massive screwdriver, put your ear to the end of the handle and place the blade on the engine, move around listening to various places and see if you can identify the area of the noise. You can really hear whats going on inside, water rushing through pipes. Clicks, scapes rattles. Good luck in finding it

You can probably use about 80% less sealant when refitting the sump. I'd check your oil pickup for silicone because that sump looked like it was sealed with a full tube of RTV

They do leak around the corners so a small amount of sealent is needed. As for the pick up it had no sealent in it or in the sump when removed

Blimey that’s a bummer Mike all that work but at least you know it’s not that now ! Sounds like a cam tick to me but I am NOT a mechanic so talking rubbish as normal . I do like a scavenger hunt though it’s interesting being vehicle detectives ….( I’m learning that with my streetka Kylie lol )

Have you changed con rod bearings? That smudge seems like worn bearings. Also its good to change con rod bolts to arp, original ones are weak and at high revs can stretch and cause problems. Do you have std cams or grinded ones? If grinded, then inlet lifters and oilways need a bit modifications

Not changed bearings. I think it came from the windage tray being too high up which is now sorted. Everything else is standard.

I'm not so sure, i looked at that when I changed the piston rings in it.
