What is the ASIA Scale? Review the Asia Scale plus see a simple visual breakdown to help you studies.
So why is the ASIA scale so important? Well the ASIA scale is used to classify the severity of spinal cord injuries (SCI). ASIA stands for American Spinal Injury Association. Healthcare professionals use this scale as a common language and classification system to accurate document and communicate the level of injury. Join me as I review some key aspects of the ASIA scale and show you a simple visual aid to help memorizing the meaning of each level of the scale.

This is good to know it’s all in the anoose and I wasn’t being molested by all those doctors. That is the reason why I had to look up this video.

Small correction, to determine between AIS C vs D you only consider the muscles below the Neurological Level of Impairment (which is the lowest level with normal sensation and at least a 3/5 strength with all 5/5 above bilaterally). For example, if the NLI is at C8 then only 3 of the remaining 6 myotomes must have 3/5 strength in order to be considered AIS-D.

Why does this assessment reference to the sacral segments only? are we only looking at the sacral segments sensory and motor function?

The scale looks at all dermatomes but S4-5 is the lowest level that can be affected therefore the scale is based to that portion of the body
