Maybe The Thing or The Shining. I agree with William Friedkin that the Exorcist isn't a horror movie. Not once did Friekdin or William Peter Blatty say, "Hey lets make a horror movie". Its about the mystery of faith. Which is funny cause Ari Aster said Hereditary was about the family drama, he forgot he was making a horror movie.

OMG I'm loving these videos, Emma! Can't wait to see which other ones you have in mind! Personally, I find the mindset that best movies have to be classics a bit strange. True, classics mean that they stood the test of time, but a lot of love for these classics has to do with nostalgia. With horror in particular, the effects, aesthetic, and acting style tend to look dated more so than in other genres, which makes it hard to take a lot of older horror (not all, of course) seriously. Finally, isn't part of the idea behind making new films creating new art, and making progress in the art of film and storytelling? Doesn't it make sense then that at least SOME of the newer films would be among the best ever made? Otherwise we are failing at this whole progress thing :)
@spookyastronauts5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. I totally agree with what you are saying, especially in horror we are all so connected to nostalgia. Some of the horror films from over the last few days have blown me away with how much thought and detail they have, they really are masterpieces!

Lesser known classic horror can get recognition even though, they can't compete with today's big budget, effects laden blockbusters. i.e. "I spit on your grave", "American werewolf in London", "Dog soldiers" "Storm of the century" Nice job on your list!

Personally though, I definitely wish that Carrie (1976) and The Silence of the Lambs (which I know some people say isn’t a horror movie, but I’d argue it is!) made it in here. I’m so glad the Shining got number one overall, it’s such a spectacular movie! "The Exorcist" is one the most disturbing and terrifying films ever made; moviegoers were passing out and bolting from their seats and running from the theater because of the film's intensity when it was first released. I remember my mother would go to the neighbors for 'bridge card' night once a week . I was about 13 and did not need a sitter. I was off my leash and would watch TV unsupervised. I will never forget watching "The Exorcist" on TV censored . But that did not matter it scared the hell out of me. I still remember to this day the censored line " Your Mother sews Socks that Smell ". "The Exorcist" was first released, the concept of demonic possession was something new for audiences to digest. The film pushed the limits of what was acceptable to be shown to audiences.The visceral language the imagery included a desecrated statue of the Virgin Mary, a young girl urinating on a carpet in front of dinner guests and that is the mild stuff . Director William Friedkin was bold enough to take the film where few filmmakers would have the courage to go, thus making the film unforgettable. Special Effects . The makeup of the possessed child is something you can't unsee; it's so unsettling in how it personifies the face of evil. Such realistic effects for the movie that it would be hard to see how computer generated effects of today could even compete. "The Exorcist" feels less like a movie and more like a true-life event being captured on film.Mercedes McCambridge . The voice from hell. She provided the demonic voice of the possessed child, and her performance is one of the key factors that makes the movie so terrifying. I will never forget her voice acting as I watched as a youth it is still as frightening 40 years later. This film it gets under my skin ."The Exorcist" is full of so many unsettling moments and based on a real-life exorcism of Roland Doe .We have William Peter Blatty to thank for bringing the tale to the masses. "The Exorcist" remains the scariest movie ever made especially if that viewer had a religious upbringing. One of the best films I have ever seen.

This list is amazing! Of course the classics always take home the win. I think they dont make movie like they used to (unfortunately) Also if you were to ask me what movies as of today that creeped me out are Hereditary Midsommar Suspiria The Blackcoate's Daughter The perfection The VVitch I loved these movies and the artistic take on horror. Its different than the popular monster and ghost spook films. As far as ghosts and monster-ish movies the original Paranormal Activity scared me to death haha, The Blair Witch Project and Pywacket freaked me out! I think when you dont see alot of what it is that's haunting the movie creeps out the audience because it's our imagination trying to figure it out. And I think as individuals our "horror minds" are our own worst enemies lol. And a "boogeyman" film that creeps me out every time is Sinister that guy creeps me the hell out!! Awsome video Emma!! Thanks for these lists, it's always fun to go back in time and discuss the classics ❤

I don't think it's a case of "they don't make movies like that anymore". I think it's more a case of movies that have stood the test of time. We've yet to see what modern horrors manage to find longevity. It's like music. There was a lot of awful music in the eighties, but we only bother remembering the good stuff and so now eighties music is highly regarding by many. No doubt there was a lot of rubbish back in Mozart's time, but only the truly great music from that era remains.

It depends on what you consider horror !! My personal favorite horror movie is the original Halloween, it scared the living hell out of me when I was a kid and I had nightmares for years and whenever I heard the iconic theme I got goosebumps and still do to this day. It has to be Cabin in the Woods, because CITW actually "is" every horror movie. Seriously, it may not be the scariest, but it is great technically, has great acting, and literally is the one horror movie to show someone who isn't sure they're into horror.

Interesting, its a good movie even though there are dumb moments, not bad. The ending reminds me of Waxwork where all the monsters show up and fight. Plus some of the references are pretty cool.

Night of the Living Dead. Of course, the original.... I shouldn't even have to say that.

I didn't mind the remake. Not as good as the original, but still up there.

It’s interesting how highly critics and others look at older movies. I wonder how our modern horror movies will be look upon in 40 years. Will we look at them differently?

So many fantastic films missing in all of these lists, not just this one. For the record, though, Emma has the best taste in film of any reviewer I've seen. Some additional considerations: Ghostland, The Orphanage (Spanish film), Darling, The Eyes of My Mother, Pyewacket, Veronica (Spanish), Let The right One In (Swedish), The Love Witch, Spring, Poltergeist, Audition (Japanese), The Cabin In The Woods, Paranormal Activity, The Babadook, REC, Hostel, A Quiet Place, Drag Me to Hell, Evil Dead, Don't Breathe, The Conjuring, Annabelle: Creation, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Terrifier, The Witch, The Howling, Gretel & Hansel, Sleepy Hallow, Pumpkinhead and The Ninth Gate.

You need to be applauded for the effort and research you put into your videos. Thank you. Apologies if you have made a video on the 'Best horror movies that flew under the radar' Lake Mungo (for example) caught me off guard. It's got one of the creepiest moments I've ever seen in a horror movie. X

didn't find Hereditary that special, def a one time watch for me, sadly.. however.. however. it is one of those films that come back and haunt you later on. I had a very vivid and realistic nightmare involving that movie after watching it and woke up frightened. I never have nightmares, I watch horror 24 7 and found this so disappointing but it somehow managed to be more meaningful in my dream and creep into them, so I gotta appreciate it for that.
