My opinion on the best lift/tire setups for your specific Jeep needs. These are strictly my opinions on what work best for a Jeep TJ, but many different set-ups can be used.

As your jeep grows in height more improvements become the norm. Rock rails with steps help with entry, telescoping drive lines with cv joints to correct drive line issues. It's like playing chess, if you make one change one component, how will it effect something else. Improved exhaust and intake systems can help regain some hp. For newcomers I recommend you watch this video more than once, it's a good one to get you started. Don't be in a hurry, you have experience to gain, have fun, be safe and take lots of photos.

I have a stock 2000 wrangler and now I'm thinking about treating myself in getting a lift kit. I don't know anything about lifts. I'm educating myself before I make my decision on how High I want to lift it and also be well informed before I talk to a sales tech, so I don't get taken advantage of. So this video was very informative and easy to understand. Thank you for the info.

I used to have an 01 TJ with a 4” lift and 33x12.5r15 Mickey Thompson Baja Claw MTZ tires. My Jeep was a 4.0 5 speed and had 4.88 gears. It was very solid on the highway at 70mph, and was fantastic off road. I had plenty of articulation with the 33” tires and the 4” lift.

Update - Have a 2 - 2.5" lift w/ 32" BFG KO2's, the Currie CorrectLync tie rod and drag link. Old Man Emu coils, Fox performance series 2.0 shocks and a Monroe HD steering stabilizer w/ the Falcon higher mount bracket that allows for perfect parallel positioning. Also installed Freedom Off Road adjustable front lower control arms and JKS quick disconnects. The ride on and off road is great now! This '05 TJ Rocky Mtn has the 4.0 I6, 3.73's and the Dana 44. Some were recommending the PSC steering box. But I don't need it. This TJ with 32's is quick, the low end torque is outstanding on these. My TJ build is done with 32's. And I don't see a need for 33's anytime soon.
@_everydayoffroad_
@_everydayoffroad_ 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah going up to the 33x12.50 you would notice a difference in the ride quality both from the larger tire diameter and the added width. That being said, with the 4.0L and rear D44 your Jeep would handle 33's great. I have the adjustable upper arms and non-adjustable lowers, you are correct that you only need one of those to correct the caster. That is strange that you can't hold an alignment, I am not quite sure what is up with that assuming the Currie setup was installed correctly.

I put 33s on my manual TJ and it actually goes much faster on the highway now. When my speedometer reads 50mph, I am actually traveling 65-70mph. You get more speed per rpms with bigger tires. Each rotation of the tires takes you further, so where I used to have a top speed of 100, I now have a top speed of about 130. I don't ever go that fast, but I can go 90mph much easier now with 33 inch tires because it takes less rpms to reach that speed.

I'm on 37s with a 3 inch lift but I went with high clearance genright aluminum fenders. Still stock gearing too and daily drive it 30 minutes to work and back which it actually rides pretty good for a jeep. Mine is a 2004 5 speed manual with the 4.0 and just drove it on a 4-hour trip last weekend. I will most definitely be changing gearing when I get new axles but the stock gearing and brakes are working fine for me at the moment.

With a 2” Old Man Emu, (OME) lift, I’ve been very happy with the look, ride and performance of my ‘06 TJ. Besides function, i.e. what you need from your vehicle, the decision about how you want your vehicle to look is very much a matter of personal preference… For me a 2” lift is combined with 255/75R17 BFG Mud Terrain tires, on American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) Pintler 17” rims with extended fender flares... The vehicle looks like stock, but bigger, beefier and more capable… And with the extended flares, the tires don’t extend beyond the edge of the flare, which is safer and mandatory in some countries… Again, it’s a matter of personal preference...

With the 3.73 gearing, there’s been a slight loss of torque, though hardly noticeable… I do intend to change to a 4.1 at some point… The ride has been superb and for all intensive purposes feels like stock.

With 33's you would be fine without any additional steering gear, but I would probably recommend making sure your factory steering stabilizer is in good working order. That along with a good alignment after the lift installation will have you running just fine.

It depends on what you intend to use the Jeep for and also if you are wanting to re-gear. 4” with stock flares and 35’s would not allow you much articulation Offroad and would also need a re-gear to be decent on the highway especially with the automatic. So unless looks mean that much to you, id probably stick with 33’s if you plan to keep stock gears and fenders.

A well thought out explanation of lift options for TJs. I have some thoughts to add from a 31" tire 2" lift perspective: - The 2 door TJs have a stock steep rear driveshaft angle that gets worse with any lift. Even with mild lifts replacing the driveshaft with a Cardan joint CV shaft even if you're a daily highway driver will result in a smoother ride and less chance of your driveshaft prematurely failing. - a 2" spring puck lift will decrease articulation compression and will need bump stops to protect from bottoming out your springs and when at full spring extension may need extended brake line mounts if you're running discos on the front end. - Synthetic (Delrin/rubber) puck spring lifts routinely get bashed out when rough offroading, expect a 5-10k lifetime and inspect them regularly. - With a mild lift and 31" tires if you're running an Inline 6 80+mph highway speeds should not be a problem if you don't care about mileage. If it gets squirrelly you've got steering linkage problems and they're not gonna get fixed by a fancy stabilizer, more likely you've got bad joints, bad alignment, etc. Fix that stuff first and a stock stabilizer should do the job.
