Gary, a few home truths about London Pie'n'mash - it all depends which side of the river you were born. South Londoners and Millwall supporters ( includes our family) will only eat at Manzies as it's the best. The 'dirty' side of the water (east end), they simply can't cook it..! Hope this helps, love the reviews, Kevin and Deborah.

You are making me hungry at 10am watching this! 😂 Being a Bermondsey lad of mixed parents (Mum was Arments and Dad Manzes). I always prefered Arments as I thought the pies were a smidge larger and the liquor better. Having accompanied Dad to Manzes for some time, I recently visited Arments and was disappointed. The meat in the pie was under done and dry, the liquor meh. I am now throughly M.Manzes (TBR primarily, but Peckham when there). PS - Manzes make their own counter chili vinegar on the premises, call on a quiet spell and you will see one of the girls refilling with a mix with the birds-eye chilies. There's also a triple spicy scotch bonnet beneath the counter for the daring!

Years ago, I lived in the Midlands for my sins in a previous life. Five bikers I knew were going to Battersea Park for a gathering, no idea why but we got there and it was boring and rubbish. I told the little throng that I'm off down the Old Kent Rd, to see my Mum and I'll probably stop off for Pie n Mash (Arments). They all decide to come with me, just to try the Pie n Mash! One bloke point blank refused to have the liquor because "it's Green". The other four got stuck in and one asked what Double Double is and I told him Double Pie Double Mash and was quite upset that I hadn't told him before polishing his off! We went to my mums and I told (Warned) them that there is a lot of Millwall paraphernalia about and it is in their interest to keep their opinions to themselves as my sister lives there and won't be impressed! As we got through the door, Mr "I don't like green gravy" piped up, you ain't kidding about the Millwall stuff and my sister came flying out of the Kitchen, straight in his face and said "Why, you got a problem with that?". He went outside and sat on the garden wall and she wouldn't make him a Tea or Coffee! Well, I did tell him!

My mate no bias owns Robins in East London & i have tried a few but that's the best for me as the pies have that slightly burnt tinge like how i do my Yorkshire pudding, most others don't have it & look quite pale in comparison, that looked nice though, never tried Manze's but know of them, think there in Hackney ?

@@GaryEats I'm not totally sure I have, but I can tell you that I have become so intrigued that I have made a list of places I will be making a little tour, hopefully this week, weather permitting. This is my list (not in any order of preference, just notes also including the places you have made videos off) Goddards in Greenwich G Kelly in Roman Road (Bow) F. Cooke in Hoxton Street M. Manze in Tower Bridge Arments in SE17 2AX Maureen's in E14 6AH I have recently watched a 2019 documentary called "The Street" by Zed Nelson which has made me be even more concerned about the changes we have seen in London and I worry that one day we won't be able to experience any of these traditions or even having any type of communities.

Last time I had Pie and Mash from a shop was many years ago when I lived in London, however I do make my own twice a year or so. Manze is the better shop and traditional, you can tell by the gravy in the pie and the way it floods out into the Liqor when cut open. Butter and milk in mash is not traditional at all and neither is onions in pies for anyone wondering.

Spot on.

They don't put butter in the mash at Arments. Just a little salt. Their filling is a lot more meatier and filled than Manze so I prefer Arments
@fenradast35779 ай бұрын
I used to goto different Pie and mash shops. The pie was always served upside down with the mash on one side of the plate. Once you sat down the jug of boiling liquor was poured over. I never heard of chilli vinegar. Nevertheless always a superb meal.

Looks like the chef at Arments was little lazier. They did not break up the mince meat as they fried it and didn't bother with gravy. That is something we don't get in Canada and I wish we did. I would love a nice pie and mash on a cold winter day.

It's meant be that way and always has, ever since I was a kid eating there. And it's the tastiest filling of any pie and mash shop. Pie, mash and liquor pies aren't supposed to be the same as your typical British meat pie. The pastry is made different. The bottom layer is almost like a thick pasta texture.

Nice work Gary, I’m originally from Belfast move to London in the early 70s went to school in fullham Henry Compton. There was a great Pie and Mash on the Lilly Road. We’d bunk off and go and get ourselves a feed. i’m going over in April for a wedding. I’m gonna take the girlfriend out for a slab up lunch.. we have been to all the high-end gaffes now for some proper London. I hope they do a bread pudding.

Hi Gary 👋 I must say I do like this traditional cockney dish that is good old pie'n'mash. For me & I've made this dish at home. It has to be liquor, none of that beef gravy muck. Manze's takes 1st place for me, too. With a belly full of this tasty treat I would be off down to the east end to demand money with menaces, just the old kray twins would have done . Lol 😂😂😂 Thanks for sharing 👍

The chilli vinegar is supposed to go on the spud. Traditional London mash doesnt have butter or milk, just spud. I'm surprised you didn't get thrown out for using a knife instead of a spoon. My wife is a Londoner I never heard the end of it when I picked up a knife at my first pie n mash trip over 30 years ago. Have you been to Harringtons in Tooting? That's an experience!

What is in liqour? I assume it's not the alcohol kind? Also, do you have to book any of these places in advance? I'm thinking I might take a solo trip one day and make an itinerary of the top food spots to visit!

You don't have to book the Pie & Mash places but some restaurants I do have to book, yes. I do go during off-peak hours though to avoid the crowd. Enjoy yourself my friend. It's not alcohol kind, it usually has chopped parsley and eel juice.
