I’ve gone through a weird phase with my fire arms. I bought all the cool “tactical stuff.” I have all the polymers and double actions. Ect. Now all I shoot is my revolvers and bolt action .22’s. It’s more fun, doesn’t blow through $150 worth of ammo in 15 minutes. I really think people underestimate how fun shooting a 38 special is. My model 10 is getting a lot of love.

I love my MR73. My first shots with centerfire were a K-38 (inherited it from Dad). But I wanted a “forever Model 19”. The MR73 is that (Intentionally, being created because GIGN wanted a M19 that could handle 40,000 magnum rounds per year) and its bluing easily equals the old S&W and Colt. Looking at current Korth and Spohr, I wonder if they will offer more classic and traditional stylings.

Wow! I had no idea that companies were manufacturing revolvers like this. In 1974 I bought my first gun. An S&W Mdl 67 Stainless Steel .38 Spl. I was only 20 yrs old. I had to get special permission from the ATF to buy it, because I was under age. ATF gave me permission because I was a sworn police officer and needed to buy the gun for work. My police department did not have any guns to issue, we had to buy our own. I still have that gun. While I will never own one, it is nice to see that someone in crafting high quality, high end guns like the Sophr in this day of polymer semi-autos. Something else I am really surprised about is that there is enough of a market to make manufacturing a gun like this at that cost viable.

German manufacturing is where it’s at. It ain’t cheap. But unarguably the oompa loompas of high end gunsmithing. I have a ‘74 python and a new python (both 4”). I have a 4” Korth Mongoose with the wood grips and the quick change 9mm cylinder . Korth is nice because the 9mm cylinder doesn’t need moon clips and you don’t to tighten the cylinders down after changing. Just pops in/out. Reality: Korth is easily twice as nice as pythons but 4x as expensive. Lastly: works of art like these do not belong in kydex holsters. They require the loving embrace of animal flesh, preferably something exotic or ideally endangered. Think sea snake, mammoth, or unicorn.

Heard you say the new Spohr revolver has the same dimensions as the S&W-686. There are optional wood grips made for a S&W "L" frame made from rosewood. They may fit Spohr revolvers. I changed out the standard walnut grips to a "combat" style grip with a not so aggressive finger grip shape. Made under contract by a third party for the S&W Company. Available through Midwest Gun Works in Sedalia, MO. Got these grips on a S&W-586. Also, started using Galco FLETCH model hip holsters for all handgun I own. These are made with excellent thumb snap for retainment. Made with a 30° forward cant that facilitates drawing the gun from a seated position, including sitting in your car. Having an off center stitching to pull the holster closer to your body for reduced printing. Galco does not make products for specifically for Spohr. Since you said the Shohr is close to the dimensions of a S&W-686. Look to the Galco model FL-104. Watch the video of stretch fitting a leather holster from Galco. Need to get two freezer size Ziplock bags for success. Not sandwich size bags.

I had a Ruger SP101 and it was like this beautiful and built to fire 100k rounds. My workhorse is a SW 442. All my revolvers are USA made (SW, Charter, NAA) and one day I might own another SP101...maybe. I know I'll never be without at least one wheelgun as my backup gun to my Glock 26 and G17 backup mag... my 442 rides in a coat pocket in winter, an ankle holster or a pocket holster and I feel great having it and can share it with my wife if needed and she can (and has) operate it...that's the beauty of wheelguns... intuitive.

You may have specified that Chapuis is owned by Beretta. When they took over, they made changes to improve productivity. Manurhin/Chapuis was never cutting corners and each and every MR was thoroughly tested before being released. Beretta has modernized the line and QA/QC is now different. Not each and every weapon is made the old way. If you really want a perfect MR-73, purchase a used one, made before 2019, before Beretta Holding Group bought Chapuis Armes SAS. Chapuis was an artisan company, family business created by David and Vincent Chapuis. The production line was pretty much exclusively built around master artisans. It's just too bad...

Thanks for the review, it always makes me proud, to see nicely manufactured German guns, despite being highly priced. I'd prefer a simpler looking revolver, without skeletonized parts or a top rail. I'm perhaps a bit "old school" 😊. The best Korth revolvers were made decades ago, when Willi Korth was running his company in Ratzeburg in Schleswig Holstein in northern Germany. But, of course out of reach, for me and many other shooters, back then. I'm sure the walnut grips for the Spohr are made by Nill (look at the inside!), who by the way, make grips for MR 73 revolvers, as well. The Trausch rubber grips on James' guns are by no means the only better option for Manurhin revolvers. Safe shooting!

Thanks for excellent content! A point to consider. If you are ever unfortunate enough to have to use your firearm against another person you are most definitely going to have to temporarily surrender it as evidence. Cops kept my gun for a year after it was involved in a suicide. Also, consider theft or robbery of an expensive gun. Lose the gun fight, lose the gun. For these considerations a lower cost less valuable weapon that is still reliable is more practical in self defense situations. High cost “purty” guns are status symbols for dens with fire places.

I kind of agree with your view on these fancy guns but not for fear of loosing them. I personally would not carry a gun of this prestige with my current economic state because my carry guns always end up getting scratched, grimy, shot a ton leading to lots of cleanings and any blued or polished surface ends up loosing it's luster. BUT, if money wasn't an issue, why not carry the nicest revolver money can buy?

The last time we’ve had similar quality and tolerances was in the 1970s before many production processes became automated, and shortcuts became the norm. While these enjoy the benefits of modern metallurgy and engineering, I’d bet you’d find similar satisfaction in a Ruger from the 70s.

I've never seen a Spohr so I can't compare it to my Korths. I think Spohr would be wise to partner up with an American company like Korth wisely did with Nighthawk Custom. Now you see many gun shops carrying Korths and they seem to be all over the place. The Spohr is your video seems a little large and heavy for CCW. My Korth 3" dual cylinder 359/9mm is approx the same size as my 3" S&W66 and very easy to actually carry. So for many of us we'll only see a Spohr in videos like yours. Are they the same quality as Korths, perhaps but we'll never know unless they can be seen in USA gun shops.

I would think with advancement of CNC machining it would become as cost effective as MIM parts with tighter tolerances, etc, etc.. if I’m wrong educate me please. These tight tolerances remind me of the WWII stories of soldiers returning to the front line and how the chose their 1911, which was selecting the ones that rattled when shaken. In other words they looked for the ones that weren’t tight for reliability.

The cylinder to forcing cone clearance is one measure of quality that is rarely available and one I have never seen in a gun review. It must be close on the Sporth as I didn't see any side blast during 357 firing. It would be interesting to know how different revolvers stack up. YFI/A
