my favorite wiki is definitely the Super Mario Wiki, which has standards of quality and professionalism higher than literally any other fanwiki I've ever seen. basically every time I've used a Fandom wiki for something I've always had the thought "dang. this would be so much better if it was following the editorial standards of the Super Mario Wiki instead of what it's doing here"

@@yurifairy2969 That's the main gripe I have with the doctor who wiki. It has insane amounts of info all cited excellently, but the main thing it lacks is pictures. The Old School Runescape Wiki has to be my favourite, a wiki so essential that they baked a "lookup on wiki" function into the game's UI. I think the worst wiki is the rs wiki. The admins are either paedos or corrupt and nepotistic. There's constant infighting, drama, backstabbing, and gossip behind the scenes that they don't show publicly, and my god they're some of the most insufferable people I've ever seen. It wouldn't surprise me if they got a notification from me simply saying "RS wiki," as I know for a fact they search and review every single mention they get on reddit. For serious use, a Fandom wiki is always going to be inferior to a dedicated alternative; however, giving the ability to whip something stupid up in an afternoon for all to see is still great. I like fanon wikis that go into absurd detail about things that don't even exist. Of note is the Plants vs. Zombies Character Creator wiki, which has fanmade plants and zombies... but they also have a category which shows some entries that were made canon. Each song page has all the albums it appeared in and when it was first performed live. I absolutely adore the "kirby bulborb" wikia. it's a mostly solo ran site made by the guy who runs a youtube plush series of the same name. last time I checked, he actually updates it daily. it's incredibly thorough about subject matters that somehow all fit into the oddly extensive kirby bulborb lore. it's just always been fun rummaging around, trying to find the most absurd pages I can find. The dude is obviously incredibly dedicated to his art, and it's almost certainly some kind of outsider art. The plushy videos themselves are weirdly entertaining, too.

Personally I love the Sound Effects Wiki, it's a surprisingly thorough wiki about specific sound effects used in cartoons, shows, movies, games etc. If there's a sound effect I know in my head but don't know the name of I wanna use in a project of mine (especially if I can't find it in my personal SFX horde due to how said sound effect's file might be labelled), it's a great resource to find out what the sound is called and even what sound effects library it originates from. Once you get past the vibe of it being run by a bunch of weird autismos that get _really_ obsessed over sound effects used in children's media, it's a really fascinating wiki.

My personal favorite HRWiki anecdote is that there’s a post on the wiki using spoons as an example of unnecessary wiki content (I’m not sure if it was from a mod or something), and linked on that page is a wiki article for spoons. On said article there is a line that states of “A main page pop-up says that, without this very wiki, The Brothers Chaps could not remember which toon The Cheat held a spoon in. The Cheat, incidentally, has never held a spoon in a toon. (The closest he gets is holding a whisk in yes, wrestling.) However, he does hold a spoon in Homestar Ruiner, as he mixes the Jela-Ton into the pool water.” Also, you got the official Sonic the Hedgehog account to both seemingly accidental reference Homestar Runner and refer to you as the lore master in one tweet?! That’s some neva-forgive action right there.

I don't often use Wikis, but shoutout to the Evangelion wiki for being there for me to deep dive for hours to try and make any sense of the plot of the final few episodes. Nothing like reading through a wall of text for an intangible philosophical concept, clicking a blue link halfway through, and starting a new wall of text on a huge robot that fights aliens. And as much as people shit on Wikia / Fandom wikis, you have to respect there being a free way to host consolidated knowledge for fans who simply don't have the money to host a dedicated site or programming experience to lay it out properly. Plus I've gotten a ton of mileage out of Fandom sites for niche games / shows.

The non-fandom jojos bizarre adventure wiki is really great. Im also quite fond of the sonic robo blast 2 wiki, it makes learning how to mod the game incredibly accessible. i also occasionally like to think about the weirdly invasive mike and melissa fandom, as well as the back in the barnyard fandom that enjoys talking about udders and milk a little too much on certain character descriptions.

There used to be a long-running fanwiki a few years back called 1d4chan. It was essentially, like many other community encyclopedias, a place where people would post and share information; specifically around table-top games like Warhammer, DnD, and other titles. However almost every single page was filled to the brim with comedic humor and dialogue between fictional characters as though they were constantly fighting over who was in control of the article. There was also an archive for fan made stories and content which made the website far more unique compared to most wikis which majorly only focus on official work or media. Sadly, I think the website was shut down a while ago or suffered some server crash, so chances are all of those stories, pages, and work are long gone.

The Coppermind, which is the wiki of all Brandon Sanderson stuff is fantastic. Of course it is not a fandom wiki which is very cool. One feature I really appreciate is the time machine, which lets you go back before a book was released if you want to avoid spoilers for it. It is also incredibly in depth on all the ways the books connect, and also hosts Arcanum, which has a record of basically every time Brandon has ever answered a question ever.

There is still one missing last I checked, one interview that supposedly was where Araki said he intended for Lisa Lisa to beat Kars' ass a lot more than in the final version but the editors didn't want that. The best wiki went away during Wikia's change to Fandom where they took away all the non-marketable wikis. The wiki in question: Animated Foot Wiki. While not the only wiki to document every appearance of bare feet in cartoons and anime, it was certainly the most definitive. Look up almost any show and you could find an entry. With each entry there were images of every single frame that showed the feet in question. It was amazing, and funny. haha. But, alas, it was taken down. an archive was uploaded to another wiki site, but most of the images weren't saved, and it's not updated or anything anymore. It's really a shame. All those manhours spent documenting the feet of cartoon characters, all gone. There would even be fan art on some pages. My discord avatar for the past 5 years has been an image of Sora from Kingdom Hearts sucking on Kairi's feet that I got from Kairi's page on Animated Foot Wiki. Kairi's page was unsurprisingly very well documented. Unfortunately, that avatar has gotten me banned from countless discords. Also, apparently I've been banned for "bringing up feet" too often. It's all BS though. There were never any rules in any of these servers against bringing up feet or having an avatar of someone sucking on a foot. I think they just didn't care for my personality and were too ashamed to ban someone for a reason like that, so they made up a rule about talking about feet so they didn't have to confront whatever part of themselves that didn't like me. But yeah. I don't think there will ever be a wiki as good as animated foot wiki ever again. It came at the perfect time for a wiki like that to exist, and it was destroyed as the internet became more commodified. That's some toothpaste we can never get back in the tube, and that toothpaste is made up of the countless animated feet that were sacrificed.

Encyclopedia SpongeBobia is essentially a direct democracy, which sets it apart from other wikis. Any user has the ability to vote and comment on any wiki change, page deletion/merge, staff promotion, etc through a support/oppose/neutral system. It really makes it feel like an actual community effort to make the best SpongeBob database possible. The site's theming is really appealing and professional looking, matching the aesthetic of the show quite well. It also has extensive information on the tracks used in every episode, character relationships, one-off characters that never appear again, SMASHED POTATOES THAT LOOK LIKE SQUIDWARD, even random objects nobody cares about. Not to mention the site hosts impressive documentation of the spin-offs and movies as well. My favorite part is the page on ESB's history, who created it and how the wiki came to be! I want to archive as much of it as I can as it is endearingly off the wall. the mips hole wiki. A wiki centered around "every copy of mario 64 is personalized" type shit but to the utmost extreme. It's a compilation of tons of random things ppl have crafted from that weird genre of mario 64 stuff, like a fucking weather system, new enemies, new floors of the castle, an oni that patrols Peach's Castle, a Dorrie boss fight, its all just so fascinating how people have turned mario 64 into a canvas for weird horror.

While the clearly better one is the JoJo's bizarre Encyclopedia Wiki which has no ads and has more interactive options to see the art and goes as in depth to include a transcriptof every single interview the creator has ever done. However in my opinion the best Wiki is Wikizilla, one of the biggest Godzilla Wikis ( It is competing with GojiPedidia which is also good if I remember correctly). This Wiki goes ridiculously in depth for a 66 year old franchise. Seriously they have articles about Kaju from a Dr pepper commercials, they have an article for a turtle skeleton that was in the background of one movie for like 12 seconds.
