In my estimation, the best to avoid being hurt by this effect of our nature is that if you find yourself in a similar situation, it might be better to ask specific people for help than calling out to the whole crowd. For example "hey , man in suit/woman with bag or fedora, please help me!" etc. I think in this case the person may feel a little more responsible.

Whoa this is real, just a few weeks ago I helped an old man who's falling down from his car, no one helped him for a good minutes until I run toward him and lift him up, that people begin to notice and gather around him, I think people just assume that everyone will deal with their own problem unless they asked for help and is enforced by experience of trying helping people out, but getting rejected with "oh no it's alright, I can manage it".

Yup it is real, it happens a lot. No one helps because they think someone else will do it and this is not good. People die because of this. No one acts

This effect is why it's often taught in cpr classes to point out specific people to call the emergency line/get the device because otherwise there's a real chance the effect will take hold and no one will do the tasks.

Personally, I REFUSE to be a bystander. I'd rather HELP victims instead of watching them suffer- pointblank.

So is it bystander if there is only one person helping someone else or is it only when it involves large crowds?

this is more psychology ...not physical science

The scientific method is not applied solely to the natural world. There is useful knowledge to be gained from observing and cataloging the behaviors of humans as a group. Though the field of psychology does have its issues, particularly with replication of studies, it does often make use of the scientific method, and there is no reason to discount it outright as a science.

@@KiranasOfRizon Um, human beings are part of the natural world, and the guy didn't say that it wasn't a science, just not a physical science, because that focuses on motion and forces of objects, not people's reaction to stimuli.
