Na, the original movie is great when taken in context with the marketing and secondary material. There are a LOT of details that connect the film to the adjunct materials and really make the world feel real. And the film was the best found footage film in ages, the only one since Cloverfield to even come close to how well implemented the found footage aspect of the film was is Chronicle. Both films tackled unique and original material for the found footage genre and built a compelling narrative utilizing that style.

Love these 2000s promotional ARGs, truly a time capsule of that age. For some reason, now knowing all the weird and borderline ridiculous in-universe stuff that went on behind the events of the Cloverfield movie (A Japanese oil-drilling/biochemistry/junk food industry giant? Eco-terrorists? That supposedly canon Japanese beverage commercial?), it makes the Cloverfield monster look almost like the least strange and out of place thing in there.

The old official canon is that Slusho extracts something called deep sea nectar from the ocean floor to use in their frozen drinks. This same substance provides nourishment to the Clover species and promotes its growth along side deep sea gigantism. The satellite that crashed just happened to scare a juvenile one and it went on a rampage in NYC.

I was fortunate to see a preview of this movie before it came out, it was different than what actually came out and it definitely was more about the drink and how it has "eggs" that grow in people. It's why we see some monsters come out of humans when they are underground, they later changed this to a bite or a scratch or something caused it but originally it was the girl drinking that Slush all night.

@@akaidatenshi plot with the monster was also different and I don't know why they didn't change the name since they changed what happened with the monster. Originally it was something like they were excavating or drilling this nutrients from a field of clovers but it was a monster sleeping underneath which was fertilizing the land and it was again like their baby mix or whatever and for whatever reason when it mixed with humans it made baby monsters. I remember I didn't really like it too much but I thought it was a good idea overall and I do like what ended up coming out at the end cuz it just was too dumb the way it was before.

i prefer the change much more honestly, sounded way too cliche that way. the concept of slusho just being this drug like drink that uses THE ingridient from under the ocean that causes creepy euphoria when injested raw is better at adding to the overall mistery aspect of the world behind the movie.

I met a woman in her 40s who thought the Blair Witch Project was real found footage up until I told her a few months ago that it was fake because the guerrilla marketing campaign was so effective. Stuff like this will burn a movie into people’s minds, for better or for worse. Usually for the better. Or at least I would hope so.
@Cuiasodo
@Cuiasodo 3 жыл бұрын
It's fascinating and infuriating that this additional context was pretty much entirely ignored by the movie, and in some ways contradicted - the end scene of the film has a visual Easter egg where something crashes into the ocean behind the characters on the ferris wheel, suggesting that it's either the monster itself crashing to earth or else a satellite crashing into the ocean that wakes up the monster. Nothing about the oil rig, no verbal mention of Slusho, nothing. A similar thing happened with the LOST ARG revolving around the Hanso Foundation - it hinted at a lot of extra context for the island and some connection to the Dharma Initiative, but then none of that surfaced or was referenced by the show.

@@xrefed I’ve been seeing some people say it’s the satellite being used to monitor the monster making it’s way across the sea floor, and that’d make way more sense than the pod from Paradox because that film definitely does not take place in 2008
@maxblake5564
@maxblake5564 2 жыл бұрын
@Jaq Attaq5: The satellite story Tagruato posted was likely a cover-up designed to give them a reason to monitor the North Atlantic to try to find Clover. The satellite that fell into the ocean that Tagruato was trying to find didn’t exist - they were trying to find the monster.
@maxblake5564
@maxblake5564 2 жыл бұрын
@Jaq Attaq5: As for the Paradox theory, I agree that it wasn’t the pod from the end of the movie that landed in the ocean (it splashed down off the Delaware coast, not the New Jersey coast), but I do believe that the falling object had its origins in Paradox. Remember when the Shepherd particle accelerator exploded early in the film, transporting the Cloverfield Station to another Dimension? I believe that the falling object was a piece of the Cloverfield Station, sent hurtling across Time and through Dimensions because of the Shepherd’s explosion, landing in 2008 in another Dimension.
@JaqAttaq5
@JaqAttaq5 2 жыл бұрын
@@maxblake5564 yeah but the problem with that is this movie wasn’t planned to be a sequel in 2008, meaning the origin would’ve had to have been in the existing universe, and we know Tagruato was tracking it using a satellite because we have pictures taken from one showing the heat signature of the monster traveling towards NYC, plus it’d seem really weak to just explain now as a piece from the Cloverfield station because the ship wasn’t broken apart in the beginning, that happened near the end and wasn’t an issue because they detached that piece in the parallel universe

For real. The first 2 movies I think did a great job staying in that vain, albeit Lane had some big name actors in it. But Paradox kind of pulled us too far away from the situation and tried to give us way too many “answers”. Here’s hoping the future takes us back to what first drew us in.

@@ComradeTitan by all means, please continue to enjoy whatever you want, I don't want to take that away from you. I just watched Malignant, and it's one of the worst things I've sat through, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Paradox is a complete failure by lacking any internal logic, breaking its own rules, having useless filler, and just overall not making any sense. The guy's severed arm moves on its own... why? He doesn't have a connection with whatever alternate dimension his actual arm went to, why does the arm that came to this dimension have a mind of its own? It's still just a severed arm, it didn't grow a brain and heart to survive unattached. The woman that appears in the wall originally makes some horrifying monster sounds... but then is literally just a woman. Nothing special or supernatural about her, she's just a lady from another dimension. Why was she making crazy noises when she appeared? The worms get dimension rift-ed into that dude's body, but... they're just worms. In reality, it should've just immediately killed him, not turned him into a crazed killer. They aren't super worms, internal pressure doesn't make people think they're hearing voices with commands and directives. The husband on Earth saving the kid didn't relate to the rest of the movie in any way. It didn't shed any light on anything going on, it didn't even really provide a great perspective of the planet, it was just a completely separate movie that was basically a rip-off of The Mist and just tacked on at random. There wasn't even a resolution for those characters, we have no idea if the monster at the end killed them or if they were about to start their own 10 Cloverfield Lane experience of being trapped in a bunker with monsters outside, just nothing. I haven't watched it since release so that's about all I can remember, but it's worse on every level you approach it. It's complete spectacle over substance. Things just happen to happen, there is no true flow of cause and effect besides "we turned on the thing and everything went crazy after". Character motivations are beyond weak, except for maybe the main character wanting to see her kids again. It's like they had a ton of interesting ideas, but instead of taking the time to develop even one of them, they just shoved everything they could think of in with no development. It is a horrible movie, and the ~20% it has on RT is, frankly, generous.

I'm so glad to see this video get a remake, so crazy to see how much you've changed and progressed as a creator. I remember watching that original video literally years ago after watching Cloverfield for the first time and feeling like "there's something more here" and I remember how your video absolutely blew me away with how well put together it was for someone's first video as well as how in-depth things got behind the scenes. Suffice to say you are the reason I watch KZbinrs like Nightmind, Nexpo, and others like them to this day and even though they may have been around longer I feel that your style in editing and what subject matter you choose to cover is much more appealing, I'd even dare to say it's higher quality then them as well. Can't wait to see what you do next and looking forward to the next 5 years, cheers man

I was and still am totally addicted to these films. I remember going to the website and pouring through all the info to figure out what the movie was about. Some people thought it was about Voltron because they mistakenly thought they heard Hud say that he saw the creature and it was "a lion". (In fact, he says to Rob that he saw the creature and that it was "alive"). The first two films are fantastic. Some people complained because the ending of 10 Cloverfield Lane seemed tacked on, which it was, but I think it works perfectly. And John Goodman should have been nominated for an Oscar. Perhaps even won! Cloverfield Paradox, while not on par with the first two, still has some exciting moments. It doesn't fall apart until the 3rd act and the ending was a disappointment. But us diehard fans have been waiting for a sequel for years and there is a rumor once again that producer J.J. Abrams is ready to continue the franchise. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I understand they want to continue with that idea of the monster. No! I want it to be an anthology of different stories that are all tied-in with the Cloverfield universe All sorts of paranormal/ Sci fi stories that share a common thread I like in Paradox how the machine they had opened a portal into the multiverses that allows for all types of creatures to come through: maybe aliens, monsters, zombies, vampires, you name it. THAT'S what I'd like to see. Enough with the original monster. Maybe a movie where we learn about those parasites. That could be interesting.
