If you have a pre-1998 Star rite duraglass shaft seal, it has no rubber material surrounding it; instead, it has an o-ring. Does the taller white part face up or down?

I have a spp 250a pool pump it is pouring air into the outflow and therefore the mechanical seal and or the shaft seal seems to be molested. I suppose adding a washer will not fix it.. My problem is finding g The right seals.

I have a Jandy pump and I need to replace the motor. Since I'm taking it all apart, and because everyone tells me that I should, I am also replacing the seal. However, on my pump, the white, non-springed, part of the seal is imbedded in the impeller. I cannot easily figure out how to grab it to remove it. How do I remove the old seal from the impeller? Do I just gouge it out with a knife?

@@Inyopools Thanks for your reply. I decided to leave that part of the old seal in place as it did not look to be damaged or worn. I did replace the springed portion of the seal however.

Can the shaft seal prevent the impeller from spinning? Impeller moves fine until i screw down the diffuser and then it does not move.

If the shaft seal is installed correctly, it should not prevent the impeller from spinning when the diffuser is installed. Sometimes, old parts from the original shaft seal are left on the shaft of the impeller and this could create a scenario like you are describing.
