Living in LA currently and desperately looking to leave the US behind. Unfortunately, this video (and others) have shown me that I'm simply not wealthy enough. My savings would last me maybe a few months out there. Part of me says "screw it, just go for it, you'll figure it out once you get there" but...that's something a teenager would think. Not an adult that knows better. I think about it every day though.

Just a word of advice, from someone who visited, fell in love with, and bought property in Belize, all in a short amount of time. It's romantic, it's different, and it is tropical and warm. So easy to visit, and decide to "buy and move"...don't be in such a hurry. It is much more different than the US, than you ever expect. Getting things done, taxes, permits, employment status...nothing moves fast, nor like you are used to. It is only a "vacation" for a short time. And once you own property, the actual process of building, can be a whole new experience. Builders have little to no oversight. It doesn't happen like the US. There are very few, if any, inspections. I saw a tiny zip cord (household, small gauge, lightweight extension cord) used to power an outlet. I caught our builder using termite eaten plywood, (cutting the worst parts out, and patch working the roof with scraps. Our caretaker cottage was built with out a single 2x4, the were ripped in half, and the frame work, of a dwelling, was made with all 2X2. I'm not saying that this happens with all builders in Belize, but this was the #1 guy in Placencia, when we were building. It does indeed happen. Just a trip to the "grocery store" is eye opening. Some staples are ridiculously priced. Lack of staples is also a very common thing. And finding a Dr. or any type of medical emergency, will definitely be eyeopening. Just a few observations. I am not slamming Belize, I love it, but I and most everyone who has had my same experience, and there are lots of em, will tell you, by all means go to Belize, but rent (usually quite inexpensive) for at least 6 months to a year, or you really won't have any idea what you are getting into, no idea at all.

We knew a Danish couple who were round the world sailors...we asked how much it cost per year from them and they said whatever you have...meaning there is always a way to live more frugally or more expensively. We lived 6 mos in Antigua Guatemala in 1999 while our sailboat was stored on the Rio Dulce. We had a huge furnished bed sitting room, the former livingroom in a Colonial house , two meals a day for $200 USD....no extra fees. Our marina slip cost $125 a month. We spent another $100 on buses, backpacker hotels to visit the Lake, special meals out, coffees etc just walking around money. So for under $500 a mo. we had a terrific lifestyle. Fast forward to 2020 we own a home in the Antigua area ...we spend what we earn ie. 2 SS checks one tiny University pension and interest income.... around $35 to 40,000 USD....or $3,000 or so a month. This includes property tax of $100 a yr, all utilities, 2 employees, food, some restaurant meals, 2 in country vacations of 4 days each boutique hotels, the best in the country and gourmet restaurant meals. I cook most of our at home meals using locally priced meats, seafood, and produce...we do eat some imported cheeses , dairy, because they have better flavor than local and we do buy some imported foods...volume wise it is mostly,local food but pricewise the imported foods take more of our budget...we just prefer fewer restaurant meals wiith lower quality ingredients than I use at home for an overall equal price cost to us. It also often includes one foreign trip to,Europe,or the USA a year. Now 73 and 78 we spend about $2,000 to 3,000 a yr on medical costs here mostly Rx whereas in 1999 we spent maybe $200. We both have non life threatening chronic conditions we monitor and medicate now...such is life. That day comes for us all. WE feel we get a luxurious lifestyle here that we could not afford in the USA esp the two employees who help me cook, do the food shopping, do all the cleaning, the gardening, the home maintenance, care for and exercise our dog, arrange dr. Appts, arrange deliveries, and drive us, I can still drive but usually dont as I am going shopping...my husband no longer drives due to vision problems. INDEED you spend what you have.

One if the absolute basics of any cost of living video is to list out your monthly budget line item by line item. However this video kept giving exceedingly vague statements like well it cost me 60% of what I would have paid in the US. That's of little use to the viewer. Start with your budget as the baseline then go into further diacussions about the lifestyle the budget supports in Belize and maybe discuss other areas in Belize where a similar lifestyle may be higher or lower.

Very informative. Just want to mention the cost of electricity in Belize. I have been here for about 8 years. I am from Alberta Canada. Unlike my US friends, I find the cost of electricity here in Belize quite reasonable. In Alberta I pay about the same in Canadian dollars (and at this time $1CDN = $1.50 BZ) per month. I have all the same appliances here as I have in Alberta. So it actually costs me much less in Canadian standards for electricity in Belize.

We are all sinners and the destiny of sinners is hell. • But, God with his immense love, gave his only begotten son Jesus Christ, to come into the world, to be like a human being, to suffer and die for humanity to forgive our sins. • So that we can now have a second chance to be reconciled to God and be saved through Jesus Christ, who gave his life for us because he loves us. • Jesus loves me, Jesus loves you, Jesus loves all mankind, that's why He died on that cross for us, He is risen and can save you from eternal damnation and provide you with eternal salvation. Great video giving perspective from local expat, thank you. I’m wondering if you have spent any time in other LA countries and if so, could do compare and contrast. I’m specifically looking at Panama and Mexico, as well as others. I like that you can work toward citizenship in Belize and they will allow dual citizenship, something Panama does not, but Mexico does, but Mexico has more taxes than Belize. So many things to consider when your looking for a place to retire to outside of the US where you can have a Caribbean beach vibe and work toward a second citizenship while lowering your cost of living.

I have lived in the Yucatan of MX....Isla Mujeres. I have lived in Guatemala, the Antigua area. I have lived in Belize but aboard my own 45ft sailboat....Ambergris, Caye Caulker, Belize City, and Placencia...I have been to the hellhole that is Dangriga. All these places are less materialistic than the USA. All these places it is stupid to,have anything high end period. Medical care in all three countries are WAY cheaper than the USA. Imported food is high cost, local food is cheap. Yes local labor is cheap. Imported appliances, tools, electronics are more expensive than in the USA. Electricity per kwh is higher. Yes propane is widely used. Belize property is more expensive along the coast as she says. In general Belize is higher. SOooo much is imported. Overall Belize beach living is higher than Isla Mujeres and higher than the Antigua area of Guatemala. The beaches in Guatemala Caribbean and Pacific are not comparable. Guatemala has a gorgeous lake Lake Atitlan that is a lovely water based option, MUCH cheaper than Belize or Mx. THERE are many villages around the lake with expats. No hurricanes to deal with and not the heat in summer. Punta Gorda is remote unless you have your own boat....way off the beaten path, not for anyone with a health problem. All depends on what you want....

Your right shoulder is higher than your left shoulder. Could be an injury, simply posture during this video, or something more serious. Thought you might be interested in this observation. Hope the region is recovering from hurricane damage. As a boater, I find all coastel areas facinating. Take care!

I'm looking to move there from Cleveland. How does rent compare to Cleveland?
@lenoncho37774 жыл бұрын
It depends bro...if your looking for a fully furnished place to rent in it would be $500bze or more per month,on islands I know of apartments that charge weekly price of $175 or more,fully furnish housing would cost more on islands as well(start up price would be $600/700),to be honest the cost of living on the islands are a bit more than villages,towns and cities....if you're looking for a place where you'll buy your own furniture and so forth,you could find prices that range from 350bze or more,maybe even less...the size of the place you want also matters and will dictate the price of the place...the most i know a place is rented for is about 1200bze a month,and that's a fully furnished place with air conditioner and so forth...

Wrong, last year on in Placencia there was 1 murder ( a love triangle) no major crimes , few other crimes. The village people ban together to keep the law, police don't carry guns, when I asked officer Mike why no guns, he said, "oh Mr Mike we are not here to intimidate". TAX on a nice home on the lagoon went up 10% last year, is now $10 as in ten , a year. Boating is the life blood here, two boats were stolen last year, no cars or trucks, the village had no accidents other than a tiny number of fender stuff, people are very safe drivers. For the price , the best place to live period, worked overseas for many years. Spend 2 weeks, as the expats all say, you will know in days if you belong here". You never get tired of this country, and crime is almost unheard of, only Belize City has a problem. Judge Ito has a place and Google the Turtle Inn.

If I keep a winter home in Belize, should I worry about vandalism? I'd probably want to airbnb or room for rent it during other parts of the year, if possible. Add to that, I can handle doing a fixer upper, so I'm thinking I might have to bring in my own basic tool sets to work on my own rehab. But I might be taxed on my own items as I bring them in?
@lenoncho37774 жыл бұрын
Vandalism??no but it would be wise to just have someone you can trust to check up on things every once in a while,location matters,and if you are going to fix and then rent when you aren't there,that's actually a great idea,alot of foreigners actually do that,it helps alot in having renovation cost and much more.
