American student here. Thanks so much for this video. It was very helpful. I was surprised to hear that UK students get their psychology programs paid for and actually earn income while doing the program! I wish this was the case here in the US. I'm looking at $100,000+ debt once I'm done with the program. I also have to work while I do my program in order to afford to support myself. Maybe one day the US will catch up with the rich education systems overseas. Thanks again!

There are P.h.D programs in the US that are fully funded and allow you to do an assistantship (get paid while working as a teacher assistant while in school), they can be more competitive to get into but they exist!

What a fantastically informative video - thank you. I’m currently finishing off an open degree with The Open University with modules in technology, social science, social psychology and mental health. Upon completion I plan on reading a conversion MSc in psychology science at Queens Belfast and THEN consider their DClinPsych programme 🤞

This was really helpful! I think the focus on applications being a numbers game was particularly helpful - I know many stress over whether it’s ‘either/or’ when it comes to applying for clinical or counselling doctorates so it’s good to have the advice that you can apply to both!

I understand that to become a neuropsychologist, you have to either take the path of educational or clinical doctorate, if the clinical and counselling training is very similar, why don’t they accept counselling doctorate as a route to become a neuropsychologist- if the counselling doctorate includes modules on neuropsychology, are you aware if it would it be possible to become a neuropsychologist through the counselling doctorate route?
@amatwa43283 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Becky, for this video it provides such re-assurance, I applied for both routes and was starting to feel like I should be more focused and know which route I needed to get on to straight away. I have also been a bit nervous about my psychology conversion MSc course which is a pass, just missed out on a Merit. Also, a bit concerned about potentially losing significant income If I get on the counselling route, currently have a young family but really feel like this is the time to go for it. I have been a Mental health nurse for 13 years and have been really passionate about becoming a psychologist for several years.

Thanks so much, this was really helpful. Do you think there's a possibility that Counselling Psychology doctorates will become funded as are the Clinical courses? Given the similarities, I am struggling to understand why the very slight differences are remotely worth spending £30k and not earning anything over 3 years. Is it simply that you have a better chance of getting onto the counselling courses, and really you're paying a premium for that benefit?
@dr.beckyspelman3 жыл бұрын
It’s very difficult to get on to clinical, some people apply year after year and don’t get a place, counselling psych is much easier to her on to. In the UK there are loans available for these courses at a reasonable enough interest rate therefore many people get qualified faster by doing Counselling Psych. Regards Becky.

Both Clinical and Counselling Psychologist day to day jobs are very very similar, the difference really lies with their approaches to psychotherapy so read up on these different approaches and see which one you feel fits more with you and your potential style of working. Hope this helps

how does someone manage to fund themselves for the counselling psychology doctorates? The student loan looks like it would cover the cost of the course, but how do you manage 3 years without an income?

@dr.beckyspelman3 жыл бұрын
That’s a really good question of which I don’t actually know the answer to. The best thing to do is to email a few of the HCPC accredited courses and ask them this, in addition to this you can ask the BPS, the uni’s they will definitely reply to you. Can you let me know how you get on as I’d be interested to know the answer. Becky.

In terms of selecting appropriate masters courses before a PhD. In your opinion would an applied psych masters be appropriate if it is built around and incldues modules on counselling and clinical psychology with professional practice experience too?
@dr.beckyspelman3 жыл бұрын
This would depend on what your bachelor's degree is in and also it might be useful to check the course requirements for the doctorate or PhD you would want to pursue and see if they advise any specific masters courses. Hope this helps!

Hello, I was wondering if you could give me an advice. I am currently at my final year of a BSc in Psychology at an Italian university. I am a midwife, I work at an nhs trust in London, specifically in a team that specialises in perinatal mental health. I would like to be registered with hcpc in the future (as you said, better to have a solid qualification). I don't know what the actual chances for me to get into one of this courses are, I hope not too low, considering the mount of effort that this took. As you said, the biggest difference between clinical and counselling psych. is funding, unfortunately. I have been thinking about what to do in case I don't get onto a clin. place straight away. Do you think it is worth getting into a counselling psych. course (provided I get a place, obviously) or get into IAPT and try again with clinical the next year? I don't want to wast time, but I don't want to spend too much money at the same time.

With an undergraduate psychology degree alone you can become an assistant psychologist, healthcare worker, you could also undertake some counselling training in order to become a counsellor. In order to become a Psychologist a Doctorate is required which is between 3-6 years. Hope this helps! Best of luck
