I personally see it as being even a broader term than non-binary, that it's people who aren't 100% with what gender theyre born with in whatever way shape or form. I still see myself as a woman for the big part and I like my experience with womanhood, but what makes me happy is looking, sounding and actiong like a man as much as I can, which takes me away from my percived womanhood personally. I am though not a man, but I'm not non-binary because womanhood is still a big part of who I am and I still relate with the term woman. So I'm genderqueer.

I identify as genderqueer because I feel like I am just as much a man as I am nonbinary, but I have one gender not two. That's what genderqueer means to me. I present very masculine, much like my AGAB, but my gender identity I feel "queers gender".

I see it as genderqueer means "queer of gender" like your gender or your gender expression is queer, you are just some way queer in your gender. Imo I feel like genderqueer would include non-binary people, or gender nonconforming people, etc. non-binary being simply not binary. Outside of the gender binary of man and woman. So they can be the same thing to some people and do overlap to me! Maybe even like genderqueer ≠ non binary but non binary = genderqueer
@cheshiregerena68552 жыл бұрын
A lot of these points also remind me of how much hetero normative folks are pushing n selling nonbinary as a third gender instead of outside gender binary. Some of the differences u address really feel like trying to distance ourselves from a "less queer" identity. I think it could be a bit like non binary discussions against those with a more femme or masc expression being "girl or boy lite" and needing to just be demi. Which sure some demigender folks may identify as nonbinary before finding the term, but to suggest they're just quirky cis folks or that being nonbinary requires androgynous expression is ironically what pushes hetero normative standards on us all. Sorry to spam a bit, just a video that really gets me thinking.
@cheshiregerena68552 жыл бұрын
Okay on the political aspect, I think now it's a time more clearly showing a difference between being queer versus being LGBT. Maybe queer is being used as a term to show intersectionality being tied to your identity, which as a black person I do feel it play into how I feel n express gender n sexuality. In the way that there's a difference between being liberal n leftist. At the same time, queer is so commonly used as an umbrella like gay used to, n sometimes still is, for the whole community so now we have the question of whether or not queer as a term itself still means not conforming to society on multiple layers(lifestyle, relationships, expression, etc.) I'm not sure. It's definitely easier when in spaces that already have inclusivity n not conforming intertwined, like a friend group lol

Thanks for the explanation. 20+ years ago when I transitioned MtF, the term non-binary label wasn't in use that I was aware of. But we had people who either couldn't get approved for HRT or simply who didn't want to. So how this would play out for us in SoCal was us binary MTF and FtM folk would have a support group meeting where we talked about transition, hormones, passing, challenges with the whole transition process and then AFTER the support group meeting we'd go to Sherry's for pie and salad and that's when the gender queers would show up to hang out for that part of the night. Gender queer was just a catch all for anyone gender non-conforming that would hang with us. We had some different labels for the few we knew that hung out. Gender rebels and gender outlaws were VERY intentionally non conforming. They had very gendered presentation, but you never knew how they'd look exactly. Kinda playing with gender. No idea what such a person would be called today. Bigender was the same as today. But I never heard this idea of mixing up pronouns and alternating. They kinda were like part timers. Conform all the way one way in one group, then all the way the other way in another scenario. Not sure if I ever really knew any real bigender, because the person who was bigender I knew ended up identifying as MTF, she just couldn't dress en femme at home because of family. Androgenes would be called agender today. Exact same thing. Tend to be androgenous and like it that way. There were others I'm sure, and this was just a tiny handful of people that were friends with us transsexuals (the word we used at the time for us), so take with a grain of salt. The gender queers were basically just friends of ours that hung out when we talked about random stuff like pie, movies, music, or whatever. I'm sure there were plenty of other gender queers out there in both queer spaces and not, but that's my grand experience with such people in the days before social media was invented.

I came out as trans in 2001 years and I concur. "Genderqueer" was a catchall, sometimes "transgender" has also played that role. Medical transition did hold an influence on identity that it largely does not anymore, especially among transfems. Post-op/pre-op/non-op for "transsexuals" versus "transgender" people who didn't use hrt (leading to phrases like "TS/TG/TV" and "trans*" lasting into the 2010s), etc. "Genderqueer" was often politicized, like "Queer". "Nonbinary" was created to be that without political implications - not necessarily trying to challenge gender as a construct, just not exclusively man or woman. I still use the term "genderqueer" because I had it first. But I'm okay with "nonbinary" too. I wouldn't necessarily say I'm agender but I'm most comfortable when I'm not being gendered.

Woman doesn't equate to 'femininity' so the foundation of your thinking is fundamentally flawed. 'Gender' is just sex stereotyping. It's not 'queer'. It's conservative, conformist and regressive.

I am a genderfluid person. Usually I am a nonbinary person with physical and social dysphoria. Sometimes though, I just wake up and I want my voice to sound more feminine than usual, I feel perfectly comfortable with my breasts, and my usual nonbinary characteristics are just gone. Regardless however, I’ve always had a sense of purpose in the world as a queer person. It’s not right for me to play the role of a man or a woman this world. Ever since I was a child I neither wanted to mother nor father biological children, but I wanted to foster and adopt. I’ve always suspected I’d be so devastated by being pregnant that I’d kill myself. I feel that’s not who I’m meant to be. I’m meant to be a queer person. A genderqueer person. My gender purpose in this world is being queer basically.

Nonbinary feels more definitive, wereas genderqueer feels more nebulous, and the latter suits me better. Also, I just like the genderqueer flag better than the nonbinary one. 💜🤍💚

for a while i identified as genderqueer over nonbinary too, but it didn't really feel specific enough, because it also includes gender roles and expression, it can also include cis or binary trans people, so i kinda moved away from it. i do call myself queer though in terms of gender. like queer as a gender the same way male or female are genders, not just how i relate to my gender is queer. technically genderqueer still fits but i'm the kinda person who needs a bit of specificity, and nonbinary is specifically only about gender and not really about gender roles or expression, so doesn't include cis or binary trans people. for myself, i wanted something that specifically says that my gender is outside of the binary, which i know is how many people use the term genderqueer too, but many others use it way broader. i love the term queer, and i hate the acronym LGBTQ+, to be quite honest. i've heard many people say that genderqueer is just synonymous with trans which is also just eh. i know it's not that but even then, i want to be clear about what kind of trans i am

I've only very recently started identifying as genderqueer, for a big part because I didn't fully understand what it was or the difference with non-binary. For me personally, although the definition(s) of non-binary do apply to me, for some reason the term non-binary just doesn't resonate with me and the term genderqueer does. I have no idea where I stand when it comes to gender, just that there's something queer going on, hence genderqueer
@Farr50Ай бұрын
I think when someone is non-binary thrice removed and the quadrangle moves more towards the queer spectrum, then you can become binary queer twice removed with a binary preference over gender identity.... Don't you agree?

Non binary and Genderqueer are not the same....Non binary is someone who doesn't consider himself/herself man or a woman or anything in the binary. Genderqueer is someone who consider himself both , a combination or more into the female or more into the male side of the binary. Im Genderqueer myself and i feel in between male and female( a little bit more inclined to the feminine) so in the binary. I really dislike when people confuse others

I don't think every marriage needs to have one person who performs the traditional role of man and the other perform the traditional role of woman. It's okay if a marriage doesn't adhere to traditional gender roles, as long as the people in the relationship are happy with the relationship.

What about the term gender fluid? 🤔 You wouldn’t happen to know the difference between: non-binary, gender queer and gender fluid (those are the main 3 I have heard, anyways) It seems like they are all very similar, but it’s more what makes you feel most comfortable to identify?
@OuchMouse2 жыл бұрын
Genderfluid is around fluid identity, so for example, one day you align more masculine and one day more feminine, one day maybe no gender at all, and another many or all the gender. Some genderqueer folk have some level of fluidity, I personally don’t at all, and genderfluid falls under the non-binary umbrella 😁 you’re absolutely right, it’s about what feels right to you as a person

@@OuchMouse Thank you so much for explaining ! I really appreciate it! I had been confused lately, and identified that way because it just sounded more like me. So, non-binary is much like when someone is part of the LGTBQIA+ community, then they have a particular identity within that community, which is where the types* of non-binary identifications come in… All coming together in my head now and why I appreciate individuals like yourself talking about these subjects. ♥️🙌Representation matters. Usually gender fluid occurs if you drink a lot of water and have to pee a lot. That's where the fluid would come in... as for the non-binary, binary, genderqueer, lgbtq, you would have to associate yourself with non-binary gender fluid non-identifying people. I think that should be clear enough
