Bombay (Mumbai) 1984 - Question #5 from Question and Answer Meeting #1
'What is the difference between the brain and the mind?'
This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

I suppose the question can be addressed this way. The brain (with its associated body) being made of matter (molecules and atoms) is a machine, a very complex one with incredible capabilities but still a machine. Being made of matter it can function only in the material world, receiving inputs from and act upon that world through its own sensory perception and physical means. The brain's consciousness is limited to what is in its stored memory. The mind, or intelligence, is immaterial, universal and omnipresent. It is not limited to any particular brain. When a brain is completely silent, intelligence can fully operate through it and that brain gets a glimpse of the limitless. The relationship is crudely analogous to a car and its driver, or a computer and the person operating it; they are of two completely different things. A car or a computer can ask the question "what is the nature of the entity out there that appears to interact with me but that seems to be out of the scope of my experience?" The answer for sure won't come the car or the computer running through its own mental stipulation.

So the brain is the hardware, and the mind is the software? If that is so, the software needs the hardware to fully exist. A computer program not running on a computer only exists as some form of writing, whether on paper or on a hard disk. BTW I _do agree_ with you if you say that the brain is hardware, and the mind is software. It makes the whole speech of K understandable in a way he probably would not agree with. I have the impression, that K thinks that the mind is some actually existing and active something outside of the brain. Like some 'ghost outside of the machine'. But if I assume that the brain is hardware, and the mind is software, then, indeed, the hardware can only accept the software if no other software is running. So the computer must have enough working memory to accept yet another piece of software to run. Also, the mind is limitless can also be understood. There might be, and there actually are, computer programs that, when running sufficiently long, will produce _any_ series of zeroes and ones of _any_ length. Such computer programs are called _universal programs._ And they are surprisingly small. I have written one that contained only 3 rules of code. So this program, when running indefinitely, produces _all forms of information_ whether it is nonsensical or not. Such a computer program would then be the equivalent of a limitless mind.

The brain functions as a mirror for the physical universe. It is wholly conditioned. It only relays information to the mind and from the mind to the senses, like a mirror. It does not think. It vibrates as an instrument of the mind, the thinker. The brain is atomic, solid. The mind is energetic, fluid. The brain functions in the third dimension, the mind in the second dimension. The first dimension is the ego in which a single continuous thread of thought begins. It is the "I" consciousness, the individual. "I think, therefore, I am" is a statement of the ego identifying with the mind. But, if the mind can be made silent, placid, like the still surface of a lake, then this "I" consciousness, this ego, would realize that it still exists, even when the mind ceases to think. It would realize that the reverse of Descartes' axiom is true. "I am, therefore, I think." Anyway, the function of the mind is to think, to concentrate, to focus and to will. The function of the brain is simply to vibrate, to relay information to the mind from the sense organs and vice versa, just like a mirror, but this mirror is three dimensional because the mind surrounds the brain, like a fish is surrounded by water. This is how consciousness manifests. It is the condensation of living energy. The whole of the physical universe is encompassed by the mind.
@margaretsmith163
@margaretsmith163 8 жыл бұрын
+Arthur Sanchez the brain is not solid.. nothing is.... give up that one. Nothing is solid... it is energy attraction only. There is no 2nd dimension the mind functions in.. dimension is a level of conscious awareness... there is no place in dimension.. you will have a brain until you no longer need a body and you become MIND/Spirit. 4th dimension is NOW and you still have your brain.. right? 4th dimension is that level of consciousness where you have to get off the fence and learn to think for you need NO brain to think at all.... and never did. Ego is the mind that comes with your meat suit and each life you have to condition it... to respond to your higher mind.. .which is what incarnates as you.

+Margaret Smith Very insightful but I believe k's talking more than the 4th dimension and the "you" incarnating. Mind, pathless land, Godhead, is a quantum arena that's limitless, no numerical, no time/space, but where pure joy, clarity, lucidity, omnipresence and omniscience dwell. Only through transcending individual egos can we have a glimpse of this Indivisibility REALITY that most sages trod and tried to tell us but hard for us time/space bounded humans to comprehend. Thanks for posting.

I know from my own experience, that enlightenment is not an abstraction. When enlightenment ignites, it has some intense side-effects. It has a rhythm, feelable pulse. It causes pressure waves to run through your entire body, which can be, at some times, very painful. K himself felt that. Sometimes he unexpectedly passed out, because the waves of Kundalini were just too much. To minimize these unpleasant effects of Kundalini, he submitted himself to a regime of 2 hours of Yoga per day. He never spoke of these side-effects. They were observed by those around them, but they did not understand that these were side-effects of enlightenment.

André da Silva Anyone who has had a validated OBE understands immediately that the non-local/non-physical mind is not the same as the physical brain. The brain, on its own, had no ability to cognate or reason. The brain acts only as a relay system. It sends messages to the mind and it is the mind which interprets those messages. The mind works WITH the brain to give us 'physical' experiences... however.... the mind exists independent of the brain. The brain eventually dies, while the mind continues to exist and function.. creating other... far more subtle, non-physical experiences. (Consider the mind's Dream State) All experiences take place ONLY within the non-local/non-physical mind. Everything here is Consciousness / Awareness itself This All all-pervasive, infinite, and formless Consciousness becomes the finite, 'individual' mind... and it is the mind then which creates the APPEARENCE of all these *different* forms and experiences where ...where **ultimately** there is no difference in anything. It is the mind which gives FORM to Formless Consciousness. All forms manifest out of Consciousness and then merge back into Consciousness. This entire Universe, and all Universes. are SELF Aware.... they all share the same State of Absolute Consciousness.... the One Unified Field of Awareness.... which is Aware of ALL that IS and IS Not... as Its own Infinite SELF...both within and 'outside' of Time/Space. Note: The term NDE is a bit of a misnomer since one need not be near death OR physically compromised in any way to have one. The moment one's Awareness is able to expand a notable distance beyond one's physical form.... the difference between the non-phyical mind and the physical brain become obvious and indisputable. Before then however it is very difficult to differentiate. & & & At first we are Programmed to identify ONLY with our physical forms, later .... our Awareness expands so that we can identify with our non-physical/non-local, individual mind. Only MUCH Later is our Awareness able to escape / Transcend the finite, 'individual' mind, and REALIZE our TRUE SELF... which is Infinte Consciousness/ pure Awareness ITSELF. The underlying Essence of everything here is scintilating Consciousness....which both supports and permeates all experiential realities of the mind. Put another way.... The One who is seeking IS The One being sought. We are ultimately more than our physical bodies and more than our 'individual' non-physical Mind... we are THAT which is the Source of all minds. We are ALL the *THAT* of - I AM THAT - We, our True SELF, are the only One here... playing all these roles... for the sake of having experiences. One could say ...we are ALL the 'dream' of "God" /All Inclusive Consciousness, caught up in our own SELF imposed 'dream' of NOT God. Eventually we do Wake Up, our Awareness does escape the contracting mind... but not until we are ready to Awaken from our own SELF imposed cosmic game of Hide & Seek. The mind acts much like a VERY sophisticated Virtual Reality machine. Ironically, the basic premise of The Matrix is not really so far off. Ultimately speaking.... there is no "Out There" out there. There is only the mind's EXPERIENCE of an "out there". All universes exist within YOU... who are Infinite Consciousness. This is not something to be Believed... that's just more Mind stuff. One must Realize their Infinite SELF... and that happens ONLY when we are ready. This is the State of Enlightenment or SELF Realization. From the mind's finite pov It's a process... that takes 'Time'. Bottom Line: Learning the difference between the mind and the brain is only step One in a MUCH greater process. Stay Tuned..... ; )
