That 2009 BU team was absolutely stacked. Kevin Shattenkirk Colin Wilson Nick Bonino and Brandon Yip all had solid NHL careers. All 6 defenseman played in the NHL which was very rare for the time

I just started my Masters program at Providence College the semester they went to the championship, I didn't think they'd stand a chance against BU, but I can still remember shouting "getthe(eff)out" when O'Connor dropped that puck!

Minnesota lost in the Ralph Engelstad Arena where The North Dakota FIGHTING SIOUX play, a rival school. Used to be one of the best rivalries in college hockey btw. SIOUX forever!

The best college moment was when I scored epic goal in the championship game to cut the deficit from 7-0 to 7-1. Yeah we lost the game but Steven Stamkos awarded me the Stanley Cup so it was a cool experience none the less.

The reason why the Holy Cross vs Minnesota game was so crazy was because the game was at the Ralph (UND’s home arena) and almost of the fans there were Sioux fans there and UND vs Minnesota is the greatest rivalry in college hockey so all the fans there were rooting against Minnesota. 1 because all Sioux fans hate the gophers and 2 because UND obviously would rather play Holy cross next rather than Minnesota as the gophers are better than HC

UND would’ve easily beat UMD last year to advance to the frozen four if UMD actually played Michigan like they were supposed to. Michigan had to forfeit because a player got covid so UMD was completely fresh when they played UND while the Sioux just played a game a day before, if the bulldogs weren’t completely fresh and were atleast a little fatigued leading up to their matchup against UND, the Sioux would’ve easily beat them

I'm sorry that's total BS. AIC was a warmup game for NoDak and as we all know Duluth had to put their backup goalie in. Maybe UND wins if Duluth plays Michigan but "easily"? Nothing about that Duluth team was going down easily.

And if it wasn’t total bs and if that had no factor in why Duluth won then I don’t see why the NCAA would’ve changed the rules and the way the tournament is run completely by adding a break day between these regional games.

@@Hawkman0402 The point was that Fanti came in cold more than that there was any significant skill gap. Although, Sandelin clearly had more faith in Stejskal which should tell you something. I'd say the NCAA added the extra day because North Dakota fans complained, and it's a pretty easy decision to appease the most vocal fanbase in college hockey, especially when the solution doesn't negatively affect anybody.

Very nice. Never been a huge fan of collegiate hockey myself, but it is nice to see topics covered outside of the NHL. I remember the time leading up to Skille's joining the Blackhawks and all the hype surrounding the whole deal. Shame it ultimately went absolutely NOWHERE. But, such is life. Not quite a "moment" but in the 2004 championship game, Denver had a one goal lead against Maine in the closing minutes and had to defend 6-on-3. In the 1991 championship game, BU was up 3-0 after 1, down 4-7 with 8 minutes left to third, tied it in the last minute, but lost 8-7 in triple OT. By the true definition of "best moment" I believe Gilroy->Bonino's goal for BU in 2009 still takes it, by virtue of the skill and high stakes involved.

If you’re going to discuss upsets, then discuss AIC beating #1 SCSU. SCSU held an overall 30-6-3 record and was set to play AIC that held a 23-17-1 record. SCSU was the current number-one seed and held a GF/GA of 94/52 while AIC held 129/119. AIC defeated #1 SCSU 2-1 in the first round of the playoffs. A much bigger upset than the 2006 game, in my opinion.

Also a Husky fan here, but I think the reason that the Holy Cross game being the more remembered upset is the differing reputation of the favorites. Minnesota is a blue-blood, and while they have a bit of a choker reputation for games like Holy Cross and their 5-8 record in the championship game, 5 titles is still tied for 5th all-time and their 14 championship game appearances are tied for first. The Huskies, however, have a distinct reputation for swooning late in seasons and crashing out of the NCAA Tournament. They lost their first 8 NCAA Tournament games, in which they were clear favorites at least 3 times and while they now have two Frozen Four appearances and a runner-up, the AIC game came as the third in a trilogy of embarrassing upsets in the NCAAs as their previous two tournament games were a loss to Ferris State as the #2 overall seed and a loss to Air Force as the #1 overall seed. I think this history and reputation is what made the loss to AIC considerably less shocking and memorable for most college hockey fans. The upset that I do think gets forgotten to often though, is Air Force upsetting Michigan in the first round in 2009.
