Rhett... OMFG... I'm laughing here because I'm having flashbacks. My grandfather was Tony Manfredi, who worked for Danelctro in the late 60's designing necks and ultimately the famed Toilet Seat Danelectro guitars. All with lipstick pickups... I have fond memories of those masonite bodies and bolt-on necks with their whacky lipstick pickups, with three toilet seat guitars on the wall not far from the oscilloscope and Peterson strobe tuner. Thanks for bringing back those memories! Think I may have to throw a lipstick into one of my guitars... or recreate the toilet seat guitar for myself! Great job, as always!!

One note about the old lipstick magnets: they’re cylindrical, like a Tele or Strat magnet/polepiece but longer. The magnets had to be wound just right ‘cuz the whole assembly is a real tight fit into the lipstick tubes. Danos were “cheap” guitars in many ways but the handwork put into making ‘em was high quality.
@Mike-eq4ky2 жыл бұрын
HA! My grandfather, Anthony Manfredi was responsible for some of that. He worked for them for some time. I think "value" might be the best way to describe them. He was pretty anal about the necks. But the bodies... that was another story. Go figure.

I was just wondering. When you’re hired for a studio session, how do you know what to bring? So they tell you the sound they want, or do you bring 4 guitars and a massive pedal board and a few amps so they can decide? What’s the process like in choosing the gear when going to a studio session?
@honkytonkinson97872 жыл бұрын
I had the pleasure of visiting a couple of studios in Nashville about 15 years ago and they already had a lot of guitars and amps available. I dont/didn’t have anything near as nice as what Rhett has but I felt a little silly bringing my amp and pedals with me that first time. I don’t have a ton of experience but every time I played somewhere in Nashville all I needed was my guitar
@smokeaguitar30192 жыл бұрын
Best thing is to ask. If you can't ask, if it is a known artist listen to previous work. If you have no clue bring a guitar you can play well. At least you can practice till you gear up.
@caseyholford2 жыл бұрын
As someone who’s played, helped out at, and called many sessions over the years, I can say people def hire the player not the guitar. If it’s your session and you have a specific ask that you have seen / heard your player use and love (baritone for sure fits this example), they’ll probably be happy to accommodate. But most producers trust the person they’re calling to bring whatever flavor they think is best. As a player, maybe you like bringing several guitars and a ton of pedals, or maybe you like just showing up with a single option and letting the producer work magic. As a studio assistant I saw guys like Gerry Leonard show up with lots of awesome gear and I saw Nile Rodgers show up with nothing but his strat and plug straight into a mic pre. Also, most studios will have a selection of house guitars, effects and amps to try out on the day and that’s part of the fun and magic of playing a session in a studio, IMO
@Derickbass2 жыл бұрын
Reading your question, I recalled a great story I read probably 20- 30 years ago. Someone laid out the difference between a New York session guitarist and a California session guitarist. The New Yorker brings one guitar, one case of pedals and takes the taxi to the studio. The Californian brings a bobtail truck with a dozen guitars, endless pedals, a half dozen amps and a roadie.

Lipstick pups (and Dano guitars) have been among my favorites for decades. I've put them in strats, teles, baritones, and even acoustics! I find that because of the "Hi-Fi" performance of the lipsticks, they make really excellent sound-hole pickups, especially for small body acoustic guitars. (The fact that they are longer is really handy here, considering the typically wider string spacing of most acoustic guitars... ) If you can find older, slightly microphonic examples of vintage dano pups; then a certain sort of 'magic' can happen when the microphonic aspect of the pup 'couples' with a small body (think parlor guitar) and creates a whole different kind of tone. (Why small body? Less prone to feedback, or at least a more controllable feedback that can be really useful.) If you want to hear what I'm talking about, search out this vid: "Mods Demo: A&L Ami Parlor Guitar with Danelectro Lipstick Pickup". I'd post a link but I don't know if that's allowed... :)

Thanks Rhett for contributing to one of my all time favourites! Always a pleasure to hear what you have to say. It would be very hard for me not to try and save my 90‘s baritone from a fire in my house. I think the wooden uncompensated bridge deserves to be featured, it is playing a big role in the incredibly warm yet so chimey sound of my Dan-E and I would recommend it to very owner of a Dan with metal bridge to try out wooden. Had the worn down wood on my Baritone replaced and adjusted by my fav guitar shop and it tunes astoundishly precise considering it has such a long scale with no separate bridge parts. And the warm baritone twanger fitted with a Capo in 5th resp. 7th fret (I prefer tuning ADGC, sometimes with drop G) is turned into the most effective cutting through everything indie trasher within seconds.

A year and a half ago I finished building my very own Dano', a 59'DC with a single 4,6K lipstick pickup from Guitarfetish in black, mounted in a somewhat slanted middle position. The neck is a laminated Beech and Oak mix with a Black locust fingerboard (scrap from my neighbors old garden furniture) and the body is scraps of spruce and MDF. The only purchased items were the tuners, frets and electronics, every thing else I made from materials that I had on hand. Watched a lot of how to videos on neck building, set up and especially painting. It has a few minor flaws but nothing serious and I love the way it feels and sounds. The 3-way selector switch lends it quite a vareity of tones with just a single pickup and definitely much more different than my 85' Fender Lead I, Warmouth Partscaster (TC body / maple reverse Explorer neck with Seymour Duncan Fullshred and a "old" Tele neck pickup) or the Harley Benton Goldtop copy with P-90s. I honestly enjoy playing the Dano the most. Even built a 51' Danelectro leader speaker cabinet to go with it and the two make quite a pair. I posted a video of the cabinet build, it's not going to win an Oscar but making great videos is a skillset all to itself.

I pretty much made all my decisions based on what I thought would look cool. Body is mostly a dark walnut color with some tan and red accents, I decided to do a red tortoise shell pick guard and thought “hey what is I did two covered humbuckers with a lipstick in the middle position?” I had to do a little routing to fit the classic dimensions lipstick pickup. It looks just as slick as I imagined, but I was surprised by how much I like the blended sound of positions 2 and 4.

Since then, they have earned respect because of players like Jimmy Page who embraced them for their unique tone. The lipstick pickups sound surprisingly good in standard, baritone, bass, and 12-string guitars. I am amazed that so many of them survived considering the inexpensive construction materials, and I’m happy that the vintage and new models are getting respect for being the workhorses that they are. The Danelectro guitar is an American success story based on filling the desire of teenagers for an affordable guitar and creating something bigger than anyone could have imagined.

They have a new 12 string out with a lipstick humbucker at the bridge and a p90 at the neck. It's a daily struggle for me to not drop the $600 lol

Sadly if you're a southpaw and can even find a lefty danelectro, you better hope your favorite color is black, thats all they got, save for a rare copper or white one, which i doubt they make anymore.

Lipstick pickups are among the hardiest I’d wager… two solid round metal pieces…

I love love love my Danelectros. I have a 12-string, a regular 6-string that I modded by adding the Danelectro sitar bridge, and a baritone. The baritone is particularly fun.

You need to include an *in-depth* A/B on Dane's lipstick, and the Tele "lipstick".

I inherited my grandfathers '59 Daneletcro when he passed away, I love that guitar. Definite Jimmy Page vibe, aside from the usual suspects (Kashmir, In My Time of Dying) I would swear that the solo on Black Dog is a Danelectro. I also have 3 Silvertones, a short scale that I tune to open G, a 2 pickup normal scale I converted to a 12 string (the "sail" style headstock will take another 6 tuners on the bottom), and one I put a 30" scale neck on converting it to a Bass VI. The old guitars have a different sound than the new ones partly because of the rosewood bridge and the poplar frames, but also the pickups do sound a little different than the new ones (I think they have a lower impedance among other things). I don't know about the new ones, but the middle position puts the pickup in series, which is another different sound from your typical Fender or Gibson. An intersting note is that Danelectro necks may have been the original template for flatter style "shred" necks, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, and George Lynch all had custom guitars with Danelectro/Silvertone necks on them. The semi hollow masonite body is part of the sound too. I have some masonite tonewood aging in my garage (kidding) that I hope to someday build a Tele body from to see if that does anything cool.

A Dan-o on Black Dog??! That idea is freaking me out, man! lol I’ve listened to the album a ba-zillion times and I just can’t tell. I also have the worst tinnitus I don’t wish on anyone. Great job, digging on a ’59 Danelectro, by the way. Sorry you obtained it the way you did. It is a very cool ax. Tone wood and all! lol
