I havent checket yet cause i dont play terraria anymore but i am pretty sure that there is an item that you can craft with the ghost bars from the hardmode dungeon that can be crafted into something else. It would then be 21 steps

I thought it would be any of the beetle armor pieces. If you crafted chlorophyte ARMOR into turtle armor into beetle armor, it would have been tied.

I kinda of forgot zenith has chlorophyte in its chain so i ignored it after you said it had to be in the ore chain, my guess was actually beetle armor since it has to be crafted from turtle armor which is crafted from chlorophyte bars.

the breaker blade probably is the largest, but it is possible some other item has a larger area (contains more pixels).

in vanilla, the breaker blade is indeed the largest item sprite wise (with a swing use useAnimation, don't know if it's the largest across all items but probably). if you try to go above around 92x92 pixels for an item sprite with a swing animation the animation kinda breaks. this is why heldprojectiles are used for modded swords that go above this size

Anything you can transmute in Shimmer can also be "de-transmuted", right? In that case, wouldn't the wall blocks of the shimmered Luminite Brick variants _(e.g.: Heavenforge Brick Walls)_ also count as potential options 3 through 10, since they come in eight varieties _(Mercury, Star Royale, Cryocore, Cosmic Ember, Heavenforge, Lunar Rust, Astra, and Dark Celestial)_ based on the moon phase? For anyone who doesn't know what recipe I'm talking about: *Luminite + Stone Block [×5] -(Furnace)→ Luminite Brick [×5] -(Shimmer)→ Lunar Variant Brick(s) -(Work Bench)→ Lunar Variant Brick Wall(s)* ...this part of the recipe right here should be reversible, shouldn't it? 🔼

i do want to mention, wouldnt anything you made from luminite also be 20 steps? if you just need 3 steps before getting to clorophyte, then you could go any lunar armor->luminite bar->luminite ore ->clorophyte

That's only 19 steps though, since it goes from Luminite Ore to Chlorophyte Ore You would need to craft Luminite Bars into something, and then use that something to make yet something else to reach 20

Technically speaking, transmutations that allow you to swap different items are the longest transmutation chain because neither item can truly be considered the item's "final form", making them effectively infinite.
