So if I'm gossiping with a friend in Korean and I say "You WONT believe what my sister did..." I would use topic marker to answer the question. If I'm saying "Guess who got pregnant?" I'm answering that question with subject marker.

This was such a good explanation. I'm fluent in Japanese, and they also have subject markers and things that have the same function as those in Korean. Like, は and が. Even though when speaking, it comes out naturally without really thinking which to use, I often couldn't figure out how to explain why it'd sometimes be one or the other. Watching this, though, I now know. And it's helpful knowing it's the same in both Korean and Japanese, which will make learning easier for me. Thank you!

@robertwilsoniii2048
@robertwilsoniii2048 7 ай бұрын
I've heard this kind of explanation but I'm not sure this is totally right. I think there's more to it than this. I think this distinction rezults from cultural differences in communication styles between east and west. In particular, Japanese and Korean communication mind thr grouo, English culture doesn't care about the group. Therefore, when a Korean asks "whatvis SHE doing?" They are saying two things: first they are pointing out and want you to know that they already know that she's there and they may even know who she is. Therefore they expect their perspective to be valued invthe communication. English doesn't do this. So the responder needs to awknowledge their knowldge thst she is there by using a topic marker to symbolize a mutual understanding between all parties that she is there, doing something. In English, nobody cares about your perspective. That's why the answer and response in rnglish is always the same. What is she doing? She is singing. Who is singing? She is singing. All the information is explictly said in both questions because english does not assume you know anything about anything when communicating. There is no group in English. When a Korean asks, "who is singing?" they want you to know already that they already know she is singing. They only want to know who it is? Thus signaling to the group that there is unknoen infoemarion that shouldn't be assumed to be known by the group as a topic, so then the responder needs to specify the unkown information as a subject with a subjecr marker to highlight the new realization. After that happens, then people can begin refering to the prior unkoen subject as a topic in the group with a ropic marker. So really, what's going on here is that if at least one person in the group doesn't know or understand the topic, then someone has to fill them in by explicitly using subject markers. Once that's done, then the group can assume it's a known topic again.
