Back when "Power 9" was coined, Time Vault was subject to a power-level erratum that made the card useless. WotC would spend the next couple of decades making rules adjustments to ensure that Time Vault remained totally unusable for any purpose other than skipping a turn and then being able to later take an extra turn. By the time the card was restored to its former glory, the "Power 9" had been that way for over 20 years.

I think Vampiric Tutor is closer to Demonic Tutor's power level than you think. While it's true that it's a top-deck tutor, the upside is that it's instant speed, which means that it not only allows you to start your turn with fresh mana, thus allowing you to play the card two turns earlier than a Demonic Tutor'd card, but it also maintains the element of surprise up until you play it, unlike with sorcery speed tutors. Personally, it's the second card that I'd put in every black deck. Also, it works great in Golos ;)
@TheStephenation4 жыл бұрын
This video is totally fine as a list of some of the top cards for commander decks. The point of confusion I see with a lot of "Power 9" comparisons is that while lists like this are fun and completely subjective, the original Power 9 weren't really subjective, but were grouped together for practical reasons, at least as early as 1995. The "Revised base set" was much more widely available than other sets. It reprinted most of the cards from earlier editions of the core set, but some were substituted with cards from either Arabian Nights or Antiquities. Most tournament-worthy cards were readily available in the Revised set, and some of the ones that were not were uncommons anyway, so still pretty accessible at the time. Aside from the Power 9, there were 11 other rares that hadn't seen higher print runs. These non-power rares were Blaze of Glory, Chaos Orb, Cyclopean Tomb, Forcefield, Gauntlet of Might, Illusionary Mask, Lich, Natural Selection, Raging River, Time Vault, and Word of Command. For one reason or another, these weren't considered tournament-worthy cards. A couple of them were somewhat in demand (Forcefield was a very popular casual card and Gauntlet of Might was probably playable at the time, although that might not have been realized much). Notably, Time Vault was banned and then later received an erratum to make it virtually unusable (it wouldn't be restored to its former glory until 2008). So it was really just Ancestral Recall, Black Lotus, Mox Emerald/Jet/Pearl/Ruby/Sapphire, Time Walk, and Timetwister that were prohibitively expensive or, in some places, impossible to find. The demand for those nine cards was super-high, and nearly everything else existed in much higher supply or wasn't popularly sought anyway. Now, there were certain cards from early expansion sets that were also quite strong. However, a quirk of the tournament structure at this time was that expansion sets could be considered unplayable! So the most powerful rares from sets like Arabian Nights and Antiquities were not considered in the same category as rares from the "base set" and were not as highly sought-after. Also, none of them turned out to be as widely useful across multiple decks as the "Power 9" rares anyway. And this was a matter of some contention. Shortly after tournament rules stopped allowing judges to block expansion sets from being legal in their tournaments, the term "Tenth Power" started floating around for the card Library of Alexandria. A rare card with a very low print run, used in most tournament decks at the time, it was the only card that became quite as expensive and unobtainable in the mid-90's as the "Power 9" were. But "Power 9" got just enough of a head start in the zeitgeist to stick around over the more obscure "Power 10." Decades later, there are lots of rare and super-expensive Magic cards. But this term from the early days has managed to stick around anyway.

Being a cEDH player, thinking of a Power 9 is tough. Here’s what I think: 1. Mana Crypt 2. Sol Ring 3. Mystic Remora 4. Chrome Mox 5. Mox Diamond 6. Mental Misstep 7. Force of Will 8. Demonic Tutor 9. Ad Nasuem Vampiric and Demonic Tutor can probably be swapped. Mystic Remora usually causes more issues for players in cEDH than Rhystic Study because it can disrupt both the early and late game even if it’s only around for a turn or two. Free counterpells are king and those two are arguably the best (Pact of Negation is also up there but can backfire if you lose permanents and can’t pay the upkeep trigger). And the ramp artifacts kind of speak for themselves. Ad Naus is the scariest card in the format, in my opinion. Butt cheeks clench when that resolves.

Lluis Almor I don’t agree with Oracle as a “Power 9” card. It is a part of a premier combo, sure, but each of the cards I listed are mainstays in either the vast majority of cEDH decks regardless of color or in the color of the card itself. Oracle is mostly limited as a primary win condition for UB or a secondary for 4-5 color decks. You’re not likely to see Oracle in a Mono-Blue or Simic/Izzet deck for example; you are likely to see Remora and Ad Naus in most decks that use their color. It needs Consultation or Pact to do anything. The card itself in a vacuum is useless.

Reallistically I don't think sensei's is entirely that great. If you're digging for an answer, looking at the top 3 and picking one is better than just not having it, but it's not really that much card advantage over your opponents, just slightly better card selection

I think maybe in cedh, but I've never really seen that many people use it in edh

I used to love top. Especially in my artifact decks where I'd run crystal ball along side it and voltaic key. You can do some crazy fun info fuckery with those cards in play and also get a draw and redraw top instantly so it doesn't dead draw on your turn

I'd argue that in cEDH, neither Flash nor Hulk make it. The list would be (before yours): 1. Sol Ring (because it's the obvious choice) 2. Mana Crypt 3. Mana Vault 4. Mox Diamond 5. Rhystic Study 6. Mystic Remora 7. Demonic Tutor 8. Vampiric Tutor 9. Timetwister (because if we're talking about the Power Nine of Commander, it makes sense that the only member of the *actual* Power Nine legal in the format shows up here). I do agree with you on Cradle. It's great. I've put it in my Bear deck, where the best thing it can do is shit out 3 bears in a turn. It was still bonkers.

Demonic Tutor is a VERY OP card, but I am very happy they FINALLY reprinted Grim Tutor, and with luck, I managed to pull 2 alternate art foiled ones out of 5 boxes. All of these are solid picks. Definitely some other ones you could argue for. Perhaps the biggest ones I could think of is skull clamp. Skull clamp I think easily fits in the power 9. There are others too, though perhaps less arguable unless this was more CEDH focused. Protean hulk, thrasios, thassas oracle, mystic remora, and notion thief come to mind. Sol Ring is banned in legacy and restricted in vintage for a reason lol. It can get out of control in multiples easily. As a singleton copy in commander; if you draw it opening hand, you're casting 3 to 4 mana spells by turn 2 most of the time. It needs no explanation lol

Been thinking about it though and I guess you need to define what the power nine are to you. They aren't just cards that win because craterhoof wins more games it is cast in then most other cards. I think the power nine is about value.... Very cheap, game winning or near game winning value. As that goes Timetwister is no longer that ridiculously strong. And smothering tithe is very strong, but it isn't cheap enough to be strong at all levels of play. I think that's a criteria that the power nine would need, strong no matter what level you play at. As that goes I think nothing above 3 cmc stays strong in cedh by itself (not as a combo piece) other than Force of Will, which is one of two cards that can stop a turn 0 win con without costing you the game.

@@Meloku171 That's hilariously incorrect. I have to share this thought that hadn't surfaced for years. I played with someone that would play 60 card multiplayer with 4 sol rings even though we all told him no, its restricted or that we wouldnt play with him if he did. He kept trying to just do it regardless and throw a fit if he got caught.

Smothering Tithe is legit broken. I have been in games with seemingly no way out. I top deck it and then I'm good. Its nuts and for anyone to say otherwise shows how much they fail to understand about the game..
@Jonathan-qk5ed4 жыл бұрын
It's a very solid/strong card, but by no means is it "broken..." You have to consider that you are spending an entire turn to not effect the board in any immediate way... A smart opponent would just pay the mana each time and treat it like Grand Arbiter Augustin IV (a card that creates a huge tempo benefit, forces opponents to a halt, but is not "broken"). Not to mention any enchantment based spot removal will be targeted at it and now you just wasted a turn... to do nothing?
@michaelmaddox25364 жыл бұрын
@@Jonathan-qk5ed ok, so should I name other cards that has the same requirements? Hell, let's just take one off the list. Necropotence. Requires an entire turn to set up for cards you don't even get until after your turn end. Cards vs crazy mana ... should I go forward?
@Jonathan-qk5ed4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmaddox2536 Cards win over mana every day, first off... Next, Necropotence has a virtual on impact effect (refill hand) not to mention it is miles higher in terms of versatlity... Top deck it mid game with a next to empty hand, check Run it out when you need to find an answer to something ASAP, check Activate it when you need that game ender next turn, check Devote an early turn to play it and set up your next 2-3 turns in advance, check Whereas Smothering Tithe is a very good early game play, but you then top deck it mid game (against good opponents) and every one is on an even playing field so your opponents actually pay for it and all it did was slow your opponents down, not actively progress your board state, while each of three opponents did so. ^ See the difference?
