There are several different design and development models in the world of instructional design and eLearning development. And while ADDIE is the most commonly used and widely known model within the industry, it's often criticized for its lack of flexibility, which is why it's often categorized as a waterfall model, where each step is completed sequentially.
However, the SAM model of instructional design, also known as the "Successive Approximation Model," is another model that rearranges the five steps of the ADDIE process into a series of sprints, allowing for a greater level of iteration. And for this reason, the SAM model is often categorized as an agile model.
So, in this video, I'll share an overview of the SAM model of instructional design, along with how it compares to the ADDIE model and my thoughts on when you should use each one for your instructional design and eLearning projects.

Thank you for sharing, Tim! My experience so far in my corporate role lines up well with how you've explained things here. For me, choosing either ADDIE or SAM has depended on each project and the business need at the time. I find that certain stakeholders allow me to manage my own projects, in which case the ADDIE model serves me well in both communicating my timelines for their approval and working in a somewhat more linear fashion to make things more "perfect" the first time. However, I find that other stakeholders, like Project Managers for example, require more agility from me. So, I will still use the ADDIE model to explain my process but, in practice, I will use the SAM model to deliver a quicker product and expect to receive more iterative feedback.

Thanks for sharing! I would agree with this. For me, typically, the fewer people involved in the project, the more agile I can be. It’s once you add a bunch of other people…all who want a say…then you need to add guardrails to the process.

@@elearningacdmy That's a great point too, and it definitely makes sense. Thanks for that perspective!

Appreciate the flexibility...yes I like logical structure, but it's always good to remember that structure is not the goal. You said it perfectly -the goal is a good product, one that serves your audience well. Sometimes we start worshipping these acronyms. Thanks a lot.

Thanks, Michelle! Yes! As I mention in the video, it's not about the process or the acronym you follow, but more about the steps you take to deliver a quality learning experience. Thanks for watching and commenting!
