I'm Spanish and there are a lot of lies outside Spain surrounding what's happened and is happening in Catalunya. Basically an illegal referendum was made, where people reportedly voted more than once and where the Central Spanish government had stated that the police would be present (so a lot of people didn't turn up to vote because the vote was useless, since the referendum was illegal, and also because they didn't want to get in trouble with the police). The Catalunyan independentist government then counted the votes by themselves and stated that independence had overwhelmingly won, declared independence unilateraly and then, as said in the video, went back on their own words after 8 seconds. In more trustworthy surveys there's about a 50/50 split in Catalunya in terms of those who want independence and those who don't (which causes a lot of problems and social division), this is also observable by the number of votes independentist vs constitutionalist parties get whenever there are elections in Catalunya. I just wanted to post this because it seems independentists are very good at sharing their version of the story outside Spain, making the rest of the country look like an oppressive dictatorship, and it is not true. The problem is much more complex than what most of you would have heard in foreign media, and if you don't believe me you should ask someone from Catalunya that's not independentist how they feel about all of this.

UN recogniztion actually just requires 5 countries to recognize you. 5 *specific countries,* being Russia, China, The US, Britan, and France. Noone elses opinion matters so long as all of those 5 are in agreement.

UN recognition doesn't equate to general recognition though, every country besides china knows for a fact taiwan is an independent country, it's just china refuses to admit it, going by your extremely strict reference, taiwan wouldn't technically be a country, but it is.

Not really; UN doesn't recognise countries as such, but allows them to be member-states; the membership requires 2/3 majority in General Assembly; 3/5 majority in the Security Council; and no vetoes from permanent members of the Security Council. Well, you seem to lack context then. Russia would be more than happy to not get involved in 2014, but Ukraine made the things Georgian way (tested in 2008) - a highly sponsored move which driven local people desperate. Story time. I was born in 90's Republic of Crimea and lived there as a child. It was acceptable to be part of Ukraine due to economic needs and people's wish for peaceful dissolving of the Union. Chechen war and Nagornyi Karabakh conflict was enough fire and blood - noone wanted it at their home region. Then U.S. money flow came - with "orange revolution" in early 00's and NATO ships coming to Sevastopol - to say the least, people were not happy. Since then Mainland Ukraine only applied pressure on Crimea at moderate pace, pushing anti-Russian practices step by step - there used to be a highly supported political counterweight party helping people of South and East. But in late 2013 the said party collapsed under corruption, betraying the people. Nationalist idiots with full support of most of the oligarchate and the West made a proper power overthrow this time. Overthrowing corruption is good, using the event as a glorified boost of nazi ideas with the prepared legal background for purges - not good. Not freaking good. The balance was broken and people were ready to pay the economic price and stand for their out-of-Ukraine identity. All they needed was the support. Right here, Russia made a respectable move stepping in. Inability of the West to step in too, and communicate constuctively over the next years - the military inflation of Ukraine was chosen instead - brought this all to a full-scale European crisis and warfare. "Motion of no confidence", you say?

There is probably a time component - perhaps the entity has to be around long enough for other states to consider whether to recognise it as being a state. There could also be a category of 'longest lived state-like entities' (meeting certain minimum criteria) - Moresnet, Tannu Tuva etc.

Technically, it wasn't an annexation at all. Russia merged Crimea with itself UPON FORMAL REQUEST of the Crimean government. You still can argue that's illegal (cough cough Kosovo cough cough) but annexation is a forceful act. Which, TECHNICALLY, it wasn't.

True Story: Back when I was 8, I made my own country. Its claims ranged from 4 counties near where I lived to 6 states. I actually made a flag for it and declared myself the ruler. The only people who knew about it were me, my parents, and a few other people. I tried to get my mom to remember *every* single moment of my life, since it would be important when I became known as the youngest ruler ever. My mom always said, "Honey, Alexander the Great was younger than you". So how did it fall? I forgot about it one day.

Well Taiwan is independent de facto but not officially Taiwan government never declared independence, like the government of China they consider themselves the sole government of all of China so declaring independence from themselves would be a bit weird Doesn't mean that there's no pro independence movement or that the population itself doesn't consider themselves as a separate country but officially it's not This kinda grey area situation (neither really yes nor no) kinda works for now so they tend to maintain this status quo Doesn't mean it'll last forever though but it doesn't need to be solved as fast as possible either, situation and modalities are important. Rushing the thing too much (weither it'd be independence or reunification) could lead to lose all that have been built until now

Crimea declared independence from Ukraine, not Russia. The independence movement has, for all intents and purposes, been led by the faction in the country that wanted to join Russia to as their ultimate goal to begin with. Declaring independence is really just a way to work within the legal constraints of international laws and the countries involved. Why do they bother with all that? To establish the legitimacy of the annexation. If Russia had just annexed Crimea, a territory of Ukraine, without Crimea declaring independence, that would've been considered an outright invasion and even the Russia's own constitution does not allow itself to officially do that. But if it is an independent state Crimea that asked to join Russia, then that's A-OK. In reality, there's probably a bunch of backroom dealings and covert operations. We'll probably never know the full extent of those in our lifetime, if ever.
