Great video! I'm signed up with Raptor to get one of these boards myself. The POWER8 chips are an incredible evolution of PowerPC. IBM has been working on POWER since the early 90s, and have been using them in their high-end servers all along. The Talos board is actually meant for high-end workstations, and it should be ideal for things like animation, 3D design, video editing, scientific simulation work, mathematics and cryptography due to the Vector Multimedia Extension (VMS aka Altivec), Vector Scalar Extension (VSE), and AES acceleration, which almost always outperform Intel's SSE; and there is already very mature open-source software available for each of those fields.

For posterity, Sadly, the Talos I project never quite reached it crowdfunding goals. However, its successor, the Talos II, using POWER9 rather than POWER8 processors, was created without crowdfunding and released about a year ago. Level1Techs and Linus Tech Tips have some videos here on KZbin about the Talos II and its smaller single-socket variant, the Blackbird board. No it is not geared to server market. The hint is in the name 'WORKSTATION' It is a Libre machine for complete free open GNU system "Libre". It is a hackers machine and IT IS NOT OPEN SOURCE... It is a Libre project. Unfortunately it is not yet completely Libre as Raptor engineering has had to sign NDA's to get it working so not everything is libre yet. It is the cryptography area of the Power8 which means we need to remove it and build our own. The same goes for the Sun Microsystems SPARC processor which was open sourced but not free as the US Government disallowed the cryptography from being made GPL. ~$3100 is the normal price for a powerful high end GNU workstation and people pay more than that on a high end gaming PC in many cases. The computer power belongs in the hands of the user NOT in the hands of the corporation, it is the corporation who is the slave that you pay to serve you not the other way round.

And now it is going to be POWER9-based, according to their site. They are taking pre-orders for a boards and CPUs slated for a Q4 release, as I understand it. I am excited at the idea of an ATX POWER board I can throw into an ATX case and turn into a POWER-based PC, essentially. I already use Linux and would love to use the latest Fedora on a POWER system. That would just have a certain coolness factor to it, like using Linux on a Power Mac was historically.
