To add, it's becoming a remote/work from home role more than ever before. With that being said, negotiate higher salaries, because some companies will low ball.

100 percent! Many companies don't understand the value of technical writers. It's similar to hiring an engineers. The companies that get it, often pay you just as well as an engineer.

Good topic of discussion. I currently work as a tech writer in the aerospace and missile defense industry. My currently salary is somewhere between the low to mid six figure range. However, it's important to understand that holding a high-level security clearance and the nature of the program I support justify the higher-than-average pay, which I'd say is not common across most industries. It's nice to know that senior level tech writing jobs in big tech also tends to pay very well. Depending on location and experience level, the salary range can approach the $200K range and beyond that.

I have a BS in Computer Science and minored in both Mathematics and Technical Writing. I've spent most of my career in IT infrastructure support roles - everything from Service Desk to Application Systems Analyst positions and everything in between and along side. I've always been the natural selection for documenting things because unlike many of my colleagues I write well, understand the importance of documentation and actually ENJOY writing. I'd say I have a knack for taking complex topics and breaking them down into manageable pieces suited for my audience. I even took on an unofficial role as Knowledge Manager when I worked for a company in the health industry. LOVED IT! Thing is, I left work to take care of a parent almost 9 years ago. Now would like to return as a technical writer and not sure where to start, how to build experience or even what path to pursue. HELP!!!

did you get anywhere with it since this comment? I'm curious about it as I seem to be more inclined towards that than I am coding, despite being on the verge of completing a degree in software engineering.

Up late rethinking my life and needing a career change. Currently spent five years in written and spoken customer service in a call center. Would my experience in customer service via email and social media count as a writing job? Additionally, while I understand no degree is required, would my Masters in Public History help me in securing my first technical writing position?

A large amount of greatly useful information for TW, especially new ones. Thanks. Hi Josh! I am happy somehow got to your video. I have also gone through your courses on your website. They seem to be brilliant and I am thinking of buying the plan for all the courses. However, for now, there is one thing in my mind. I would be grateful if you could find a few moments to guide or answer a question that would be related to career enhancement in TW (without disturbing your work and privacy). However, that seems a bit personal, so I hesitate to put that question here. How can I send you the question personally as a direct message as we do on LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.? Please advise me on how to do it. I respect your privacy. So, I would reiterate that it would not be repeated queries going for long. It's just one question. Thanks again.
