Honestly I'd replace Pichu with Togepi. Not only is it the most iconic baby pokemon from Gen II, but in the games it's the pokemon you receive from the egg you're given in both gen II and the gen IV remakes. And considering that Red's canon team is based off of Pokemon you get through in game events or special encounters, that seems to fit better than Pichu. Plus in the Adventures manga, Togepi/Togekiss became more of a stable memeber of Gold's team by HGSS.

It seems hard to do especially the starters Lucas seems like a laid back type "Turtwig" And dawn seems kinda like an energetic person "Chimchar" Or they can both maybe have a piplup In the gen 4 games intro it shows lucas with torterra and dawn with chimchar and piplup is neutral Lucas also has a magmotar in the movies. The manga isn't cannon If you give lucas torterra the community will be triggered so is it really worth it Dawn also has a turtwig in masters but lucas doesn't have chimchar :/

My head canon team for gold typhlosion sudowoodo the red gyradose from lake of rage and Umbreon because in the games in goldenrod bill gives him an Eevee and 1 of it's newest introduced evolutions at that time was Umbreon a dark type and the dark type was first introduced in generation 2. a Pichu which in my head canon is what hatches from the odd egg that the old breeding couple in goldenrod gave him.and Dragonite which fully evolves from the Dratini he obtains from the elder of the dragon den after he passes the test and Clair gives him the rise badge.

Typhlosion is obvious, because it's on his team in most occurrences of him showing up, rivaled only by Feraligatr. I feel, however, that since neither Silver nor Gold fits a Meganium, that Gold would almost have to have Typhlosion for Silver to have Feraligatr. It's not the best arguement, but since the most popular forms of media have given Gold Typhlosion anyways, that being the anime, the Pokemon Adventure manga, and Pokemon Masters, that it fits best anyways. Ampharos is next in my opinion. First and foremost is that in the official Pokemon Music Video GOTCHA, Gold battles Red with an Ampharos. On top of this, it's the best choice to get an advantage over the early gym leader Falkner. It would also give him an advantage against Bugsy's Scyther, and since it was canonically seen on his team, in official animation, I think that's enough to say he would canonically have one. Next is Togekiss. He gets the Togepi egg canonically, and there's no reason not to use it. It's a powerful flying type, and that gives him access to power of flight. His fourth team member would be the red Gyarados. it's a powerful water type, and it's incredibly rare due to it being shiny, and he gets a perfect opportunity to catch it. No one who calls themselves a trainer would pass that up. On top of that, Johto was where shiny pokemon were introduced, and having the first protagonist where a feature was introduced not have that thing that was introduced in his/her game is just weird. Gyarados is, for this reason, the only member of the team that is not a pokemon introduced in the Johto region. His fifth member would have to be the Steelix you mentioned. Not only does he get an early opportunity to trade for an Onix that he could evolve, but Jasmine herself offers to trade him a Steelix for literally anything he wants to give her. Not only that, but he does canonically get one in one manga series, and it does fit as a new pokemon with a new type that was introduce with Johto. A perfect fit. The last one is where I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with me. Mostly because of it's extreme lateness. That's Tyranitar. Now hold your Ponyta's I have reasons. First and foremost, he does, again, canonically have one. Just like Ampharos, he canonically has one in the official Pokemon Music Video GOTCHA, using a rock attack to defend from Red's pokemon's attack. Furthermore, this pokemon gives him the last new thing introduced in the Johto games, that being the Dark type. On top of that, it's the Johto Pseudo-Legendary, and nobody else in the entire two regions, uses one, except for Brock, and Brock only uses one in the remakes. This way, whether you're talking about the originals or the remakes, someone uses the Johto Pseudo-Legend. To be fair, I suppose, the GOTCHA video didn't come out until after this, but since I didn't see this video until after the GOTCHA video came out, I feel justified using it to make my choices anyways. So, yeah that's his canon team in my opinion. TL;DR Gold's team would be Typhlosion, Ampharos, Togekiss, Red Gyarados, Steelix, and Tyranitar.

I'm bored atm so here's my take... 1. Typhlosion- Starter pokemon 2. Togekiss- Egg gift 3. Sudowoodo- Regional roadblock 4. Espeon/Umbreon- Gift(Leaning more towards Umbreon because the dark typing was introduced in gen 2 plus it mirrors Red's Espeon in G/S/C) 5. Scizor- It was shown under Gold's ownership in the ruins of alph official artwork, It represents the steele typing which was introduced in gen 2, It could represent the bug catching contest considering scyther is one of the rarest catches, and lastly it would make good use of the metal coat given to you by the old man in the SS aqua after finding his granddaughter. 6. Red Gyrados- Forced interactable encounter(It also represents the introduction of shiny Pokemon) Alternatives: Ambipom- Gold has it in the adventures Manga. Aipom is also found by headbutting trees so it could act as representation of this hgss feature. Donphan- An alternate version of Ethan or Jimmy used it against Ash in the Op of the Zoroark movie. It's also a Heart Gold version exclusive. Mantine- Gold uses it in the adventures manga. In Pokemon generations it is implied that the Red Gyrados was never caught. Mantine would act as the perfect replacement considering it shares the same typing with Gyrados. It is also version exclusive to Heart Gold version. Raikou- Gold teams up with it in both the legend of thunder anime special and the adventures manga. It is also available as a roaming encounter in every Johto game(even before you face the indigo league). Shiny Pichu- Gold has a pichu in the adventures manga. There is a shiny pichu event in hgss(which also allows you to get spiky eared pichu). It is available as an odd egg Pokemon in Crystal version(which has an increased chance of being shiny). Ultimately would take Gyrados's job for shiny representation.

In my opinion, the most canonical team for Ethan (in the games since in the manga he already has an established team), they are: Typhlosion, Togekiss, Sudowoodo, Eevee, GyaRADos and Dragonite. Each of them is possible to find in places in Johto and some are even impossible to find, in addition, they are part of missions and events in the game, so come check them out. Typhlosion - It's his starter, he catches it when Professor Elm offers him three Pokemons and he has to choose one. He chooses a Cyndaquill, which later evolves into Quilava and finally into a Typhlosion. Togekiss - It hatches from an egg that Professor Elm gave it after walking a lot and this Pokémon evolves with just that, you have to walk for it to gain happiness points, but there are ways to get happiness points in conventional ways in the game. First, a Togepi hatched from the egg, then evolved into a Togetic and finally into a Togekiss. Sudowoodo - You find a small tree blocking one of the routes near Goldenrod and it cannot be cut down. Rumor has it that she moves from time to time, so to get her out of the way, you'll have to defeat the Gym Leader, Whitney in Goldenrod, to gain the trust of a Flower Shop Owner. After defeating Whitney, you gain the Flower Shop Owner's trust and she lends you a SquirtBottle that you use to water the small tree. She reveals herself to be a Pokemon that didn't like being wet, her name is Sudowoodo. You have the option of capturing this Pokemon or defeating it and losing the only Sudowoodo in the entire game. It doesn't have any evolution, but it's a very strong Pokemon. Eevee - You get it after talking to Bill at his house in Goldenrod, he tells you that he is going to be busy and that he won't be able to take care of his Eevee, so he gives you the Eevee to take care of. Taking the Types of Pokemon you have on your team, the best Eeveelution for your team is Leafeon and I'll explain why. Firstly, with a Fairy Type Pokemon on the team (Togekiss) there will be no need for a Dark Type Pokemon like Umbreon since they are weak against Fairy Type. Also, a Psychic Type like Espeon cannot be very useful either, as they are more useful against Fighting Types and they can easily be burned by Typhlosion or defeated by other Pokémon on the Team. So, the only option we have left is Leafeon, discarding Flareon, Vaporeon and Jolteon, since we already have Fire, Water and Lightning Types on the Team (Yes, a Dragonite is capable of learning Lightning-Type moves). A Leafeon will be very effective against Water Types and Lightning Types, as there are no Pokemon effective against those Types on the Team, so the best Eeveelution for Ethan's Eevee is a Leafeon. GyaREDos - That was just a "fun" pun lol. He is just a Shiny Gyarados that can be found in the Lake of Rage on the route above Mahogany. This Gyarados is irritated by sound waves coming from Mahogany, btw, these sound waves are forcing Magikarps to evolve. When you encounter this Angry Red Gyarados, you have the option of defeating it or capturing it, because even though it is just a Gyarados that can be found in any water area, but it's a Shiny Gyarados! Are you going to miss this one? Furthermore, your battle against him is very important, because thanks to that, you meet the Champion of Johto: Lance! He is accompanied by one of his Dragonites and thanks to him you discover a Team Rocket installation underneath a Gift Shop in Mahogany. Dragonite - After defeating Gym Leader Clair in Blackthorne, she asks you to go to Dragon's Den to prove your worth as a Pokemon Trainer and finally get the Dragon Badge. When you get there, The Elder of the place will ask you what you think it takes to be a Pokemon Trainer and you will answer him honestly. After proving your worth, he will approve of you and say that you are an excellent person in every way, Clair will be angry, as even she wasn't able to pass this test, but she will apologize later and ask you not to give up on being a Pokemon Trainer. After returning to Dragon's Den (without finding a Dragonite on the way) you will talk to the Elder again and he will give you a Dratini, let's face it, It's much more symbolic to gain a Dragonite from a Sage Elder than to find one lying around. And this is Ethan's most canonical team in games, assembled by Game Freak herself, almost rare things that you find along your path or get from a Character. Therefore, Ethan's Team has very powerful types of Pokemon, they are: Fire-type, Fairy-type, Rock-type, Grass-type, Water-type, Ice-type, Dragon-Type, Flying- Type and Lightning-Type.

My candidates for Gold's team, there are more than six, but you can pick & choose to your liking. -Typhlosion, starter -Ampharos, seen to use one in the GOTCHA music video -Togekiss, evolved from the Togepi in Elm's Egg -Umbreon, evolved from Bill's Eevee, also a fitting counterpart to Red's Espeon -Scizor, evolved from a Scyther caught in National Park, he is also shown having one in old Sugimori artwork -Hitmontop, evolved from Tyrogue given by Karate King -Red Gyarados, though maybe not, since Blue already uses a Gyarados, specifically when Red chooses Bulbasaur, which IS his canon starter. -Azumarill &/or Donphan, Marill is seen with Ethan/Lyra in HGSS, & Jimmy (Gold's anime counterpart) is seen with a Donphan in one scene. There is Dragonite, from the Dratini given at Dragon's Den, but I personally object. Reason being, Dratini is only given to the protagonist in only one of the three games of Gen II, that being Crystal. The game that Kris first appears in. I think it's only fair that she has the Dragonite, not Gold.

I think Steelix is canonical. In Violet City there's a house in which a man it is trading his Onix for a Bellsprout. Also, like you said, Steelix was introduced in Gen 2.

You can just say that he has a similar trend with red, such as the small yet most powerful Rodent, the eeveelution/massive water dual type, the limitively founded hard to defeat pokemon, and all three starters. Seeing how Suicune is much more associated with Crys, I guess he wouldn't be likely having it and I guess he should just be a johto only trainer.

Fun fact if you glitch the game without getting a starter both in Silver and the remakes, Silver's starter choice indicates Gold would get Cyndaquil. Thanks to special video shown after the crown tundra reveal I've come up with what I think gold's team (mainly cause I saw two key pokemon that he used in his fight against Red according to the video and the others are based on multiple sources and or key in game events) would be and this case. Typlosion Togekiss Shiny Gyrados Umbreon Tyranitar Ampharos Typlosion was obviously a given since he has always been put up with Gold. Togekiss is mainly due be an in game event. Shiny Gyrados is practically a given since if I remember correctly that was also an in game event. Umbreon was one of the new Eeveelutions of Gen 2 and personally I think Gold and Umbreon made an amazing pair. In the special pokemon animation shown after the crown tundra reveal, it depicted Gold using both Tyranitar and Ampharos during his fight with Gold. Cause of that I'm putting those two in my team. They honestly are good counters for Red's in game team.

My Headcanon for his team: Typhlosion Umbreon Ampharos Donphan Heracross Red Gyarados Whenever Ash owns a pokemon that could fit the protagonists, I lean more on choosing that pokemon to their teams Honorable Mentions: Sudowoodo, Aipom, Scizor, Pichu, Noctowl, Tyranitar, Raikou I usually like to give some event/gift Pokémon to the other protagonists (Lyra) so I thought that Togepi would fit her more ^^

Gold is Red's Gen 2 counterpart. What happens in pokemon Crystal is his Canon journey, just as yellow is for Red, and Emerald for Brendan. The pokemon that are given to you in game are done so because that is a Canon event Gold experienced. His team would be Typhlosion (Silver's is Feraligatr), Togetic (The whole reason he starts his journey is to collect this egg), sudowoodo (like reds snorlax, Gold had to catch it to continue), Red gyarados (one of the main parts of the story is him and Lance at the lake of rage stopping team rocket), suicune (saw Gold for the pure hearted trainer he is and specifically let him catch it), and his final pokemon would either be Umbreon (Eevee from bill), dragonite ( dratini from the Dragon master), or hitmontop (from the gifted tyrogue). His Manga and anime mons have nothing to do with his Canon team. Jimmy is Golds anime counterpart, while Ash is Red's.

I do agree with your interpretation of his team, but I'd probably give him Togepi/Togetic/Togekiss instead of Pichu, since it's also a baby Pokémon and it's part of the story of the Johto Games. And I'd probably give him the Shiny Gyarados instead of Steelix. I think it would just make sense for him to catch it at the Lake of Rage.(I know he didn't have in any media, but still)

I knownim late, but I think based on Red's team as a staple for Gift pokemon, Gold team would be 1. Typlosion - linked with Gold in almost every media form for Gold 2. Togetic / Togekiss - received as an egg and is the staple baby pokemon of gen II 3. Sudowoodo - you have to encounter to progress the story/ plus Reds Snorlax counterpart 4. Red Gyarados - Another pokemon you must encounter to progress/ plus represents when shiny became Introduced in gen 2 so makes sense for him to have one 5. Umbreon - Gift pokemon from Bill and specifically unbreon because gen 2 introduced day and night cycles and Umbreon only evolves and night plus a perfect counterpart for his Espeon in Gen 2. 6. Lastly Dragonite - It's cool and and a gift pokemon from the dragon temple , plus rare woth exteme speed.

My favorite team is a Johto version of Reds team to kinda match his team, all 3 johto starters to match the kanto ones , then Ampharos (or mareep if you wanna keep it unevolved like pikachu), then since Gen 2 introduced steel and dark types, I used Tyranitar to match Snorlax and then Skarmory is the more unique Gen 2 steel type since Steelix and Scizor come from Gen 1 pokemon, maybe Fortress but Skarmory just seemed like the better pick.
