these are facts in the USA but in the developed world everyone thinks they are jokes or urban legends!

Wow. A lot of these parents seriously need to have CPS called on them.

For real. The gang leader was a better parent than a lot of them, which says *a lot*.

That is, if these stories are real. I don’t wanna assume they’re fake, but you never can really tell with Reddit.

I would've quit if I'd been the OP for story 11. I have zero tolerance for lies being knowingly added to my record by an employer; if they have a policy that allows that, they're not good enough for me.

I had a teacher who told us about the time she had a student who was the daughter of Russian immigrants. Every day she would be taken out of class for the last hour so she could go to her gymnastics class. The problem was that the last class of the day was English. The kid barely spoke English at all and it was severely affecting her grades in other classes. When my teacher tried to confront her parents, they explained that their daughter was being trained into the family business; preforming in circuses as an acrobatic. At one point her father stood up and started banging the desk while chanting “Seventh generation ac-ro-bat! Seventh generation ac-ro-bat!” Over and over until his wife finally calmed him down and they left. Safe to say the kid continued missing her English classes.

God forbids she learns English well enough to want to do something else with her life

Ah yes, parents. Most parents I have met, they were fine. Even weird situations turned out OK. One day a mother came up to my class to complain that I made her daughter stand in the trash can and have the other students make fun of her any time she was late (which was often). I was quite taken aback and called the girl up. I asked her if I did that. Ashamed, she meekly says "No". I asked her why she told her mother that. She said that she didn't like being late to class because of her mother and she missed out on things. The mother was both angry and embarrassed. I told the mother, "Let's make a deal. You don't believe half of what your daughter tells you about me, and I won't believe half of what she tells me about you." She never came back to my class.

Yet people wonder why so many teachers have left the profession.

CPS needs to put a majority of these kids into homes that will actually be able to make them grow and enjoy life. Also, if the parent or parents are going to be assholes to the teachers, we should allow the teachers to give back what they get without repercussions!

is the kid fed? have clothes? a place to sleep? CPS is unlikely to do anything unless physical abuse, and then its a maybe

It is completely inappropriate and I think even illegal to not have a professional translator in a parent teacher meeting, and instead have the student themselves be the interpreter or translator. It’s a conflict of interest and inappropriate.

My mother came back from a parents' evening and told me that my history teacher felt guilty because when she looked at me I appeared to be in distress. That was true - I hated history.

I like the story about the parents that wanted to advance the kid, and how the dad reconsidered the idea when he thought his son wouldn't be able to get a date.

My sister had to have a parent/teacher conference about my niece. Apparently my niece had taught herself cursive and the teacher couldn't read her handwriting. My niece has excellent handwriting, but her teacher was an idiot.

Story #19 sounds WAY too outlandish to be even half real! But that’s Reddit for you.

I was terrified of PTCs because I was afraid of my father (who was abusive) getting ammo to use against me. The one I had in 8th grade involved classes that I needed to take in my freshman year of high school. Now my teacher was a fantastic teacher but she recognized that I needed a teacher who could work with my learning disability. So she proposed to my father that I take Pre Algebra and that the teacher at the high school I was going to was really good at teaching students who needed extra help. My father just said “Oh yeah. Molly’s really smart. She’s just lazy. I’m thinking of putting her in Algebra II.” My teacher and I shared a look and she told me later that she had no idea my father was this nuts. Fortunately she was able to convince my father that the teacher would move me up to the next grade if he thought I was capable. That satisfied my father and that was the end of the discussion.

While ive had some pretty awful students prior, id talk to parents, and usually they were cordial and at the worst, deflected about their kid's behavior or said sorry but did nothing to actually help with their student's behavior. The worst ones are as follows: Me: [at home, sick] My phone rings Parent: immediately begins yelling at me about something i wasnt present for and did not see, do, or have any knowledge of in any way. Eventually when i got a word in, i was able to clear up that i was sick at home and trying to sleep through the illness, and got a sheepish apology. And then i started teaching online school after leaving that job due to toxic administrators and harassment (my exit was unwilling, as they essentially left me with the option to quit or be fired, after i filed with HR about my harassment) Me: calling parent about student not showing up Parent: Well i dont understand any of this computer stuff and why are you sending all of these emails also heres a list of several unrelated problems that have nothing to do with my child attending his online classes Me: politely trying to resolve all of the issues, and detailing to parent that they are the parent, legally responsible for their student attending school, and also legally responsible for their child when they are in an online school, so yes, shes going to get a lot of emails. Parent (who has an IEP student with special education classes): "thats r**arded" Why enroll in an online school when the entire system is computer based? That idea is just wild to me. 10:04
