I watched pile 2 in regards to my boyfriend's mom. Everything makes perfect sense, even her comparing and being sad. I can feel that sadness in her when she visits. She's had a hard life and been through a lot so I see why she'd be comparing her kid's life to hers (and me, by extension). We're expecting a baby now too so the shrinking thing also makes sense, like I'm going to take up more and more of her son's life and she might feel like she's losing that place, but she still gets to be grandma and she knows she's welcome at our house any time she wants.
