Had a similar noise on a VW TDI it turned out to be a hair line crack in the cam shaft hub centre from the woodruff key locating slot , good luck , you have the patience of a saint and very thurough.

I once had a similar noise at a similar frequency, although mine was more of a whistle. Turned out to be a cracked glow plug, the noise was combustion gas whistling through a crack that was so small you couldn't see it. So it might be worth changing the glow plugs.

Mike I really hope you're onto some think with the pump timing. I once had a squeak that from the cab sounded like it was behind speedo but upon further investigation seemed to be coming from the injector pump area, All I did was replace the diesel filter and never heard it again, that was several years ago and still going strong.

The noise has gone because airfilter housing removed. It's the rubber mountings underneath that have gone and it's metal against metal.

My only suggestion is to check the air filter strap cotton reels, had a knackered one once that made a weird squeaking noise that went with the revs

No clue as to the weird noise but VE Pump timing has almost been my nemesis. Not one of the Land Rover things but a VW iteration(well Bosch for VW) that has an electric governor instead of a mechanical thing. If it’s not on the button regards dial gauge adjustment it just won’t start.surprised that the pump you have actually ran at all. Maybe that’s the tolerances Land Rovers are renowned for.. Meanwhile I struggle on to time my pump just to get it to run so I can adjust it so it runs correctly. It’s been a long process and much advice sought(along with completely incorrect info from a manual/specific to my van) but KZbin is helping me out in that regards.. always thought Land Rover VE pumps were easy to time up.. mine I has been complete twa7!!

It may have already been suggested or checked but if it's a squeaking I think I might be tempted to check the blue hoses and make sure they're not rubbing on something or each other

Could be the clutch release bearing not fully disengaging (rubbing on the diaphragm fingers) or something else in the bellhousing (loose bolt) rubbing.

You have the patience of a saint I have to say, I'd have been raging long ago. Compelling stuff. I know you're ruling out the vacuum pump, but I kinda thought it could be peripherally related somehow, because the pitch of the "chirping" changed quite noticeably lower when the vacuum pump was removed last video. Be buggered if I can think how it can be related though.

Nothing worse than people guessing, but my 50p is something in the bell housing. Sounds like a dry squeek somewhere that's devoid of oil. Only place left to explore, poss a bolt backed out behind the flywheel?

I'm still thinking it's half engine speed, Injector creak (run engine and slacken unions one by one) or valve train, maybe a cam follower roller...

Does it squeak at all turning the engine over by hand from the crankshaft? Other possibilities are a piston ring or valve guide too tight. And can you listen from underneath? If it's in the clutch/flywheel area, it might sound louder underneath?

maybe there may be some rubbing on one of the motor mounts, where the noise only occurs when the block is vibrating?
@donhappel9566Ай бұрын
Purely guessing since I'm not there in person, but it does make me think the noise was external to the engine.

This is way the best video you have made Mike. Better than a George Gently mystery. Never give up. They used to say if don’t succeed try and try again and if you still don’t succeed give up before you make a c*#@$ of yourself. The other one was if you can’t fix it bugger it up so no one can fix it. I never subscribed to either of those if only just to be bloody minded. You are the best mate. 🫡

Mike, if it was an automatic tranny I'd say "flexplate". A mate had an auto Tdi D1, with that chirp it turned out the flexplate had cracked and the edges of the crack were rubbing together, evidenced by lots of fret corrosion in the bell housing. Could the flywheel centre be cracked?
