Mike, the main learning I’ve taken away from this epic journey is to see if the noise is running at the crankshaft frequency or the camshaft frequency, as that reduces the potential number of causes down.
@BritannicaRestorations29 күн бұрын
Yes - when I spun the cam without the rocker shaft, I knew it had to be valve related - never imagined it would be a valve/guide!

Woohoo a six part mini-series - well done, pour yourself a wee goldie 👍 Having bravely identified the source, now grab more popcorn for part #6 "The Cause" With the rocker and shaft components withdrawn we have around a dozen pieces left - which one is it? Place your bets! 100/1 shot is the left side collet, 200/1 the right side collet, the Spring is evens, with short odds on the current favourite - the Valve, with the Seal coming in at 3/2...the Slide is tracking well at 4/1 - the Spring cup is at 15/2 and housewives favourite, the plucky little Lash cap at 3/5 - this is anyones bet! Roll up, roll up, lets see the colour of yer money ladies and gents - bet in play, but bet responsibly - we won't condone betting on the wee screw and washer that holds the guide, but we'll take anything on weasels, or other rodents at a generous 50/1 😎👍

very very interesting - great detective work. pls let us know more about the history of this engine. the noise with the engine running was definitely a metal on metal banging. like you sad the engine didnt had power. to bad you didnt measure compression. anyway ... i wouldnt hesitate one second and take the head off to have a closer look what is going on. and also the rocker and the rocker shaft. but i dont pay the music. but what else can be done .... precisely i had to overhaul my s2a engine a month ago. blown gasket. all oil channels in the rockers were filled with a slaggy tar. rockershaft worn out too. i cant believe the engine was still running. what a genius design at its time. still wondering why and how on earth this valve was failing. and against what the valve is banging ...

Good job on tracking down the canary in the coal mine !! Would it be worth pulling the valve stem seal off first, before removing the head ? Maybe, just maybe you only have a damaged seal and the valve and valve guide are OK.

What's the recent history of the engine up to the squeak starting? What bits are new? I had new valve guides in my old Beetle not so long ago, with new-old-stock valves, and for some reason some of the new guides wore out in only a few hundred miles. Not sure if the guides were reamed out to too small a diameter for whatever steel the old valves used to be made from? But one of the inlet ones went squeaky whilst driving, then stuck open.
@beekeeperkevАй бұрын
Valve stem oil seal working too well, usually they let a tiny amount of oil by

Is the correct rocker shaft pedestal fitted at the front? There is a drilling in it for the oil feed to the top of the engine, the others don't have it but can be interchanged by mistake, the rocker box looks quite dry of oil.

Congratulations, now that's a strange one. I wonder if it's the valve springs. Can they be removed with the head in-place?
@BritannicaRestorations29 күн бұрын
Yes, you can replace the springs/seals, but the piston must be at TDC or you run the risk of dropping the valve!
@Reaper4367Ай бұрын
is it the separator springs?

If that problem had occurred and someone took their truck into a main dealer they would have had to use the defibrillator unit on them after handing over the invoice. I'm sure your customer is going to look twice at your bill as I'm sure you have spent a great deal of time on this issue, and it's not over yet.
