I love the handheld intimate shots at the beginning. But for the limestone stacks, I wish you'd shot a panorama. A line of white mounds with the Belt of Venus above and a minimal foreground might have worked pretty well. Just my opinion. If I ever get to Egypt, I'll have to give this area a look-see. Thanks for mentioning the tour company.

Beautiful video Tom. And, as always, sincerely honest. I imagine you feel a lot of pressure on every video to get the great shots but remember, that the majority of people who follow you do so, not only for the photography, but also for the reality that you bring. Keep on keeping on :-)

Tom as someone from the desert myself I was so quite ready to dismiss your trial of coming out with anything worth while from a brit guy who didn't spend anytime near the sands but I was immediately impressed and quite touched from the get go by these top shots that I honestly thought you've taken them with a drone only to find out no you actually can understand and appreciate a beautiful sand when you glance them . kudos tom glad to see you in our part of the world please keep Saudi Arabia in your future trip plan as we can easily compete with Egypt when it comes to beautiful deserts , research Alula

Interesting location. Personally I would have also shot some images with less foreground, the mysterious white mounds on their own with interesting skies could have been worth a go! Cheers.

Yes - I think I would have gone closer in to the white rock formations with less foreground. Having photographed many locations squeezed in on business trips around the world, I know how difficult it is when you have such a short time available - but I feel that you didn't make as much of the stunning landscape as you could have done. Not a great fan of the detail limestone/sand shots tbh - sorry. Not a place I have ever heard of so will read up on the place and, you never know, might get to visit one day.

It's amazing how much that limestone looks like snow. Living in Michigan, it took my mind a while to wrap around the fact that it WASN'T snow. So much beauty! Our favorite photo conditions are just before sunrise and just after sunset. It's amazing how many people take off the second the sun sets and they have no idea that the show is just about to begin.

What intrigues me most about your opening handheld shots is the absence of anything that gives a sense of scale - we could be metres or kilometres above alien scenery, with little or no familiar frame of reference. My favourite kind of abstract image.

Was overjoyed to see you in this location…10 years ago I visited it having had enough of the pollution in Cairo…the hospitality offered by the Bedouins and the conversations with the driver (first criteria be an excellent mechanic because if your 4x4 breaks down out there…) gave a huge insight into a compelling alternative to our ‘sophisticated’ western style of living. Great food, otherworldly landscapes, huge dunes and that sculpted whiteness. I found it hugely inspiring…especially sleeping under the stars with no light pollution and a desert fox coming to eat the scraps after dinner. I must admit I slept well in the open under a pile of camel hairs blankets. Sorry you had a bad night….but happy you have highlighted this place as a photographers dream location…Egypt’s tourism needs this kind of help. Bravo!

You look so comfortable with the fuji camera, like how it was in your old vids with the canon. Less camera spec talk and more image/composition talk, I like it. Its a bit off topic, but yeah, you look happy with your choice of camera gear, and it seemes like it allows you to focus more on the images. Keep up the good work I always look forward to a new Heaton upload 👍🏻

Thomas traveling?…,.Yeah!😁. I really like all of the shots, but I particularly love the cupcakes (great description by the way). The beautiful and delightful cupcake shapes with that gorgeous sky is a perfect combination of happiness and relaxation. That particular shot left me wanting to stop and stare at it, taking in how interesting, lovely and calming it is. For me, it is a definite large print wall shot. I was sorry to hear you say that you could not sleep that would certainly affect your photography, but you still got a wonderful shot.

Very difficult situation Flying into a location that you've never seen and hoping to get a portfolio image within a few hours? Could happen, I suppose, given your experience and ability to find a composition; plus a bit of luck, along with your excellent post processing skills. I'd say you did very well, Thomas, but, for myself, I would log this as primarily an experience and a reconnaissance trip. You'll be ready for it next time and knowing what to expect in the way of lighting quality and subject matter you'll come away with a beautiful portfolio of desert shots.

Hi Thomas. Surprise visiting Egypt, but then-again-to it's just a hopscotch-and-a-jump away from you. From US it's a 12 hour flight just to Istanbul. Happy the Country is open again. Interesting how nothing grows in the deserts there isn't it. And talking about being hot, Man, it reminds me of being in an oven, perhaps a "microwave" oven at times. By your hooded jacket it must be Winter. Keep up the great work.
