It was amazing to see Shad walking around my home city of Newport. The Castle was built as a trading post to keep track of ships coming up and down the River Usk which was a busy trading spot since Roman occupation. The castle was ransacked in the 1300s by Owain Glyndwr and his rebel forces, and slowly it fell into disrepair since. Wales is a great spot for it considering it has the highest density of castles per square mile than anywhere in the world. A lot of them were built by the Normans who were desperately trying to keep control of the area.

Glad you are heading to Wales. More castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world. Also, good pronounciation of the Welsh names :) To answer some of your questions about Newport castle, it was a river facing castle, so there were little to no fortifications on the land side. It was built to control access to the river Usk and was used as an administrative centre. It was said to be very luxurious, so that big archway was essentially a viewing chamber overlooking the river and the watergate. It was sacked by Owain Glyndwr during his rebellion.

Many castles were remodeled into stately homes. The advent of the canon, made their place as fortifications largely redundant so they had large windows added to express the wealth of the occupant. Some of these conversions, such as Carew castle in Wales, were done to exploit the views of the surroundings. Glad you're enjoying your visit!

And/or where shot to smithereens, burned down, etc.... But that's the toll you pay for having almost 1000 years of history behind it. Makes for GREAT history lessons and story though....
@thoso1973 Жыл бұрын
Yep. European castles slowly transformed from being designed as defensive strongholds into homes, where the local lord actually wanted to live and project wealth and power. Also, most Medieval castles were never sieged in their 'lifetime'. Most were built to keep the local people under control and protection, not to withstand sieges from enemy armies with siege engines.
@CookieTube Жыл бұрын
@@thoso1973 It highly depends! There are as much castles build by and for a 'lord'/a family/etc and later converted to defensive strongholds, as the other way around! Castle types come in all forms, sizes and shapes... and functions. Sure, most will have had a battle or two (or more) in their lifetime, but not all castle were originally build as a defensive stronghold and later converted. It also highly depends on the region and what was custom. Eg: 'German' style castles were often originally build as a home for a single family/lord, often to show-off and display power. 'English' style castles were often build as a stronghold/defensive building for a whole community. Of course, it is much much more complicated than that, and there is always a big overlap between the two building styles. So even this is still a big generalization. Also, many (if not most?) castles *were* in fact sieged or conquered at one point in their history, and switched 'owner'/controller many times. Also remember that a siege doesn't necessarily mean 'conquered'. So, sieges weren't always successful though, but that doesn't mean castles didn't 'suffer' from it. Also note that many times sieges weren't successful because of the fire power and technology, but simply because of prolonged occupation and thus inner castle resources got depleted and the 'owner' or community had to surrender. *There is as much variety in castle history than there are communities in the world.* Saying all castles started as a strongholds/defensive building and later converted to a 'lord' home (or the other way around).... or that most were build to keep local people under control/protected, are very very big misconceptions and generalizations. It all depends....
@davidioanhedges Жыл бұрын
This one is odd, it's 14th Century and mostly built to house the local lord, and gather toll from the river - hence the water gate being the main one It was built to impress, more than strictly to be defensive ... The big window was I think original, and was later bricked up with smaller ones inserted ... this is how it is shown in 18th Century paintings

My dad as a young scoundrel would climb it with his mates, but the inside stairwells have all decayed even worse than the outside. But i just think of his story of slipping down onto the muddy bank & getting stuck, when 2 old ladies shuffled down to help pull him out. If you do visit Newport again, if you're heading westward to Cardiff (Many castles there), there's a red tower that will peek from mountain trees as you travel the motorway (It's not as red as it used to be...). This is Castle Coch which is very well restored & treated as a sort of small museum. Back-to-back, these 2 castles, we see Newport's very naturally degraded example, next to a very refurbished example of a castle, which really helps get some perspective on our modern day understanding of them, & the gaps we fill. There's a lot of focus around this concept you'll see in south-wales castles, as a lot of them incorporated wooden structures that are no longer standing, but will be shown through some of the given information at these sites.

People are pretty good at irrigation these days, I'd presume it's almost entirely proportional to population density. The UK uses something like 70% of its land for agriculture, but has a lot of people to feed in a relatively small area - 20% of the US population in an area 37.5x less, or about the same land area as Oregon.
@IcicleFerret Жыл бұрын
In Illinois, lots of areas are designated as "wetlands" or as flood plains and are legally protected against development. It's most noticable when the (sometimes bone dry) protected wetlands butt up against a road. We're a very flat state so even just a few feet of rise can affect water flow. Perhaps Michigan is the same way.

Absolutely criminal that KZbin's biggest castle geek had to wait this long to see a castle in person. So happy for you, Shad!

Shad's excitement is noticeable. I'm so happy for him and his wife to be able to experience England for the first time. I can't wait until he sees other castles and the Tower of London.
@dazblue5515 Жыл бұрын
Such a pure reaction to that first castle... not sure how unique it is, but Newport Castle actually had a water-gate or dock beneath that central tower! Be interesting to see what castles are on your itinery.
@jonevansauthor Жыл бұрын
Tower of London has one too. I think you can pretty much guarantee most castles on rivers would have had, just to get goods in and out let alone people.
@suburbanbanshee Жыл бұрын
Certain parts of Wales, Cornwall, etc. had a lot of water travel instead of the more difficult roads. But of course Newport was a port, so probably easier to bring goods by boat from ships, rather than by wagon. Interesting to see the town that Newport, Rhode Island is named after, because that was originally a big port and then a US navy town.
@jonevansauthor Жыл бұрын
@@suburbanbanshee we have 14 around the UK - Newports that is. It's not the most original of names :D
@grindelston5968 Жыл бұрын
I was gonna say , it's not like York or Halifax where this is the country with the original, I would imagine lots of countries with places near the sea would have an area with a new port hence the name

One of england's most historic and quite unknown castle is Ludlow castle in Shropshire mainly known for its part in the war of the roses with alot of writings about how armies pass through it and multiple princes of the war of roses rather staying within the castle of going pass it its quite an amazing experience ngl

As someone who's grown up, taking these majestic buildings for granted, it is lovely to hear the enthusiasm you exhibited, Shad. My wife and I love visiting them.

Serendipitous that you found a castle while going out for breakfast. I love how excited you were about it. I also love that they have models of the castles out front for you to see what they were like. But seeing it in person must be so much cooler than just on video or pictures. But I do appreciate the pictures and video. I wonder if the water level was lower at some point. I also wonder if there had been a drawbridge over to the front gate. It doesn't make sense for them to have access only via boat. It just makes me so happy to see Shad happy.

Good to see you enjoying yourself here in Britain! It's weird, growing up with visiting castles as an activity almost as common as going for a walk in the woods, I can't imagine what it's like for them to simply not be around.

So happy for you Shad. I see many of us people from Europe take these amazing structures for granted and not appreciating them enough. And then, someone knowledgeable and passionate about the matter, only now has the opportunity to see (and feel) them in person. It does make me feel a little sad, but also very happy that you get to experience this

So happy for you shad, as someone who grew up surrounded by castles, I can tell you they never cease to amaze. If you are passing through Belgium to say hi to your ancestors friendly neighbours. I recommend the castle at Bouillon. Ghent is one of the if not the best preserved medieval city you can find. There you can find t'Gravesteen and it's armory is also quite a delight.

Im so happy for you! IF you come to Germany, i really really recommend the moselle region around Cochem. The castles are practically lining the river, one every few kilometers. And one big highlight is the Cochemer Reichsburg, a beatufully reconstructed castle sitting majestically above the City.

I think the small castles have the best histories, because they tended to change hands more often. "Ah yes, well this castle was converted into a monastery in 1406, then became a private residence in 1633, it was a military barracks in 1752, a hospital in 1867, a private residence again in 1903, and now it's a pub!"

Welcome Shad to a land filled with magic and wonder. A place where the monuments of the past still stand tall. From the roman baths to the great castles. I wish you an incredible stay on the small island I call home. I hope you get to see all the things you plan on and maybe a couple more surprises along the way.
@jonathanmercer7109 Жыл бұрын
One of the fascinations and joys of visiting castles is piecing together the history of development over time, looking for things like rooflines and wall-scars. Plus, in Wales it was not unknown for castles to be designed for resupply by sea or river, to avoid having to march men and materiel over potentially hostile territory. This made for a more complete circuit of walls facing the landward side, and fewer weaknesses associated with gates. Obviously, windows could be much larger overlooking the much less dangerous river side. I expect you have your itinerary well set, but you're not far from Raglan - just saying. Perhaps check out some Iron Age hillforts too? Enjoy Blighty!

This is such an honour Shad and so beautiful to see you witness and touch Newport Castle :D I'm born and bread in Newport and to see your reaction when you saw the castle was amazing and the photo of you touching the stone also brought tears of joy to my eyes, so deeply happy and proud to know you have been to my city and got the chance to see our castle :D :) there was also a large wall that surrounded the town back in the day and the hotel now called The Westgate Hotel was where the West gate to the town was stood :) I will have to find a render of how medieval Newport looked and send it to you so you can see it :) Have a fantastic time here in Wales and the rest of the United Kingdom so happy you are here :)
