I'm half German and have lived there half of my life. I'd say: Train stations, old buildings, good food, summer festivals and Christmas markets, green fields, farms and a great community and economy. Ich bin stolz halb Deutsch zu sein.

"being proud" is a tribal feeling. It is romantic, it is easy, it is instinctive and it feels good. But it is not a mature thought really. And it causes probably more damage than good. We should realize very clearly that we cannot be proud of our country. And then continue to love it with your whole heart. And with your all intellectual potential. I don't feel proud and I'm not ahamed. I just want to contribute to my country to help it to be able to solve it's problems to the better.

There's nothing wrong with being proud of a country that managed to build itself, realize its mistakes and uphold honourable values of freedom, individualism and human rights. There's also nothing wrong with wanting to defend this culture and its values from gradual undermining and destruction. This irrational rejection of any sort of national sentiment should stop, and if anything it serves to expose a wealthy country to intruders with no respect for any culture but their own to wreak havoc while emotionally blackmailing the people for their past and fear of being xenophobic into blind acceptance.

Whenever I asked someone the question "Where would you want to live, if you could freely choose?" there are a lot of countries mentioned, but I kinda noticed that there are two main opinions; "somewhere in the south" Italy, Greece, Spain and so on - and "somewhere in Scandinavia or Canada".

i'm kind of happy one dude said conformity. In other stereotypes or cultural differences with Germany videos, I have not come across or heard of the 'conformist' one. As having hosted a german exchange student and meeting his german group of friends, the first thing I noticed were their clothes and how they were all wearing either polos or button down shirts. They were dressed nice but found it odd that they were all similar in the US you would see people with piercings, dyed hair, long hair, hipster, goth, nerds, bros, and everything else. Found it strange...

It's true. This phenomenon of conformity is also seen in lot of other European countries, even more so to small Scandinavian countries like Sweden and Norway.

Very interesting! The way they said Italian or Italy sounded exactly like how I would say it (I am a native of Los Angeles County near the beaches). Once I get my bachelors in nursing I plan on being a traveling nurse so maybe I will be able to work in Germany for a time :) I have always wanted to go to Germany and I also worked for Lufthansa on the ground at Los Angeles International Airport. I would describe the typical German as being efficient and organized.

I think it is more about feeling proud of fellow country(wo)men achieving great things? As a German I definitely feel some kind of pride when "we" win something / compare well on an international level. I just think we don't celebrate it as much as Americans do.

interesting answer! I guess if a nation has a great industrial economy without so much imperialism(usa, france UK) the people must have discpline, punctuality and other elements that make the nation people work as a team. Same thing with south corea japan sweden and other rich countrys thanks to their hardworking skilled people.

Actually the word proud does still have the meaning in the sense of pride in Germany, but it is historically negatively tinged so everyone tries to find a workaround for the question when asked so directly. In a soccer game no one thinks about that and is proud subconsciously.

Exactly; the scars of German history are felt deeper by the older generation who evade the question and act as if it can't be answered. The younger people often say yes (especially in Part 1).

II) And since people don't stop telling us how bad we are and how much we have to make up and so on and on one can't really do something about it. - In fact I've got tired of explaining my point of view and do what most people in the videos do: "What does being proud of my nation mean?" And then just say "I'm kinda happy that I live in Germany and it's nice here. I like living here." ... I guess for most people it's the modest way of saying they're kind of proud to be German.

I think the word proud has a different meaning in German than it does in English. In German the word proud usually pertains to an accomplishment. One can be proud of a good grade on a test or something like that so you see when the Germans are asked the question they seem a bit confused. The definition in English I think is a bit more flexible and is more often associated with nationalism. Watch German soccer fans at an international game and you'll see that they do have pride.
@ihsahnakerfeldt9280
@ihsahnakerfeldt9280 7 ай бұрын
The concept of "Stolz" practically perfectly corresponds to with the English term "pride" in all of both terms' connotations, whether pertaining to personal achievement or national pride. It's just that owing to recent dark history, many Germans are understandably reluctant to say they're proud of their country.

I find it kinda odd.. And sad really, that so many Germans almost seem like they're unhappy being German. I'm not just talking about this video. I've watched quite a few videos about Germany, because I like it. I just don't get it. Germany seems amazing to me as a Dane, and I kinda hate myself for forgetting 99% of the German that I was taught in school. I'd really like to able to speak German fluently.. But at least most Germans seem to speak English now, so we can still communicate. :p

It doesn't have anything to do with history. "proud = feeling pleasure or satisfaction over something regarded as highly honorable or CREDITABLE TO ONESELF (often followed by of, an infinitive, or a clause)." You can not feel proud for something that other guys have done, because you did nothing and the action is not creditable to you. Only people brainwashed from a small age by patriotism will not get simple logic and will indulge in sheep mentality "I am proud of my country" bullshit. A german man has the same right of feeling proud about what his ancestors have done as a guy born in Mozambique. They both did nothing for the actual state of affairs in Germany.
