100% agree Cody. Canadian selection for short course worlds is done a similar way and just as frustrating.

Didn't they just correct that this year?
@paulkornfeld
@paulkornfeld 24 күн бұрын
@@dalenesbitt yes, they now have a selection meet in SCM in August after the Long Course season as selection meet for SC Worlds that was announced for the next 4 years. So this is something that the US could copy if it works for Canada. I was more referring to the decades of frustration before this year of swimmers that were better at SC than LC and how the funding works wasn't just in the US.

Holy moly! What is wrong with the people in charge??? They might as well use short course yards for Olympic selection

I believe its set up to promote olympic athletes. They give preference to them for international experience because developing olympic talent is most likely the highest priority for them. So, even though sc swimmers miss out, im sure for them its fine because their Olympians or people who show promise in the long course (and due to the olympics/lcm worlds, the more coveted) format get experience/development. All the points you bring up are good points, they're also glaringly obvious. So, we have to assume they're also aware they're not sending their best team. Which can only mean, its not important to them. And like you said, they would most likely rebuke any criticism with "look at how good we are." And when we are as successful as we are at the biggest stage, where I presume the most money making opportunity lies, they're not going to switch it up to give a max or Coleman an opportunity. Its sad because I agree, its very exciting to watch short course swimming and I want to see the best compete. Hopefully Isl or something like it emerges to better promote short course swimmers and provide opportunities for them. Whats more, we usually do fairly well at sc worlds even without an ideal team. Im sure that's just icing on the cake for the administration. Finances and logistics aside, another commenter noted that they could just take the two fastest times in season. So they dont even have to host a meet, it could be really simple. So I think it all boils down to, they just don't want to and would rather give opportunity to swimmers who show promise in the long course format.

In Australia we have SC nationals in September that decides our team but our SC season also runs from June (overlaps LC trials) to September.

agree with you... most of the usa swimmers already compete in scy, so let's give a change for those who rarely can make a lc team to have the chance to make a sc team and show their potential

Tons of collegiate swimmers could have a chance to hit Olympic trials if it were short course, because entire season is short course. It complicates training. In the build up for the Olympics, athletes can work on sets to maximize skill for long course.

Or just take the two fastest SCM swimmers for each event who have swam the best times in 2024 in SCM. So you don‘t need a selection meet / Trials and the good swims from the 3 World Cup meets are also counting

100% agree. I want to see some SCY all out swimming in a big stadium like Olympic trials. Id pay money for that. There are way more SCY swimmers in the USA than LCM.

And let's face it --- the entire high school and NCAA experience is wonderful for those who are great at short course! So we favor long course internationally and in Trials. Good say I. :)

The only challenge is whether this might dummy down our long course efforts. Often, starts and turns wins short course; swimming wins long course and we already swim too little long course with many of our swimmers. So, what we've been doing is reinforcing our long course swimmers who have the best chance to win the Olympics. I'd hate to lose swimmers because they were too short for short course success. One Michael Andrew is enough. :) He was fit for fifty; sometimes for the 100, but never quite as fit those who worked on all parts of the energy spectrum. That seems like another subject, but it might be that this extra reinforcement for not being able to go the extra two thirds of fitness long course requires might reinforce... not being fit enough to go the extra two thirds of fitness to win at long course. You might have never seen a Caeleb Dressel winning Olympic Gold. He proved you can be great at both -- as did you!

You should have non qualifications for senior state meets and let masters swimmers swim USA swimming meets with out having to qualify for USA meets. Because I love the sport it’s incredible to swim and watch I’m back to USA swimming after a 3 year break due to mental health and Covid pandemic but I’m back now and I love it.

If they cannot have a SCM trial, they could set a date and send the two fastest swimmers up to that date to Worlds, so the fastest SCM swimmers would go.

Any serious swimming competition should be 100% long course. NCAA short course championship = painful to watch(no one watches). Olympic long course = very entertaining to watch(everyone watches).
