Why not school just let student do a series of question to identify which type of learning is effective for student then group student base on their common learning preference and teach them. I think this would be more effective compare to just group all student together.
@TheLittleGeniusWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Most definitely 😄 there are so many newer styles of teaching/learning techniques that could potentially maximize student potential, although there also many barriers for it to be feasible... hopefully someday!

There are been studies done on this, altering material to fit the student's learning styles was ineffective.

Learning styles don't exist, studies show that delivery method should change based on the topic at hand and not the student.

That's because technically you are, learning styles have no significant studies to support that they help with learning. Instead multiple studies have proven that changing the delivery method of information based on topic at hand is best.

Is VARK a reliable means of identifying students learning style? Thank you.
@TheLittleGeniusWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your question. While from what we can see there is the potential in variability of accuracy for some categories based on various factors, overall the VARK model/questionnaire has been shown to be consistent/accurate. Here's a link to a study examining the VARK questionnaire using the Rasch analysis tool to examine accuracy: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1742-6596/588/1/012048/pdf

@@airenegerman5615 There are multiple studies to discredit this learning style model. Many studies actually show that the learning style should change based on topic at hand rather than student.

systematic research reviews and meta-analyses examining the validity of learning styles and their application to education have come to the same conclusion. Despite the intuitive appeal, there is little to no empirical evidence that learning styles are real.

Thank you for the feedback, and point well taken😊, this was our first video we ever made and, at the time, our recording equipment was what we had available at the time 5 years ago, which wasn’t great and again apologies for the clarity and definition… since then we have upgraded our mic/setup, and while this video holds a special place for us as our first KZbin video, someday we’d like to remake/remaster to bring it up to the audio improvements of some of our newer videos 😄 thanks again for the feedback!

It doesn’t work, tests have shown that students even when using their preferred learning style have shown NO learning benefits. Even with their LEAST preferred choice there was NO difference in grades and tests
@kfluhx3 жыл бұрын
People who make this argument assume that knowledge about learning preference is supposed to improve education results or outcomes in standardized test settings. The actual research and training tools offered by VARK is very careful to address what this information can and cannot explain about people or learning. I suggest you read it! To use the example in this video, about needing to find a destination, I would ask you... When you're trying to find or arrive at a new destination, would you PREFER using the list view (or even print out the step-by-step street turns before leaving)? Do you rely more on following the visual map view in your phone GPS, and maybe even turn off the sound telling you where to turn? Or, is that voice saying "In 5 miles, turn left" the only thing you really need? You are sure to arrive at your new destination regardless of which method you chose (the same as results on a test aren't likely to change by knowing your VARK score), but your personal experience in getting to that destination in a way that feels best to you is the point and the benefit of the VARK model. It's not about putting people in a box or improving learning outcomes on a mass/standardized level. It's about knowing what type of information you (and even your peers) PREFER or respond best to, in order to make the process of learning or achieving a goal more successful/enjoyable/customizable. It's not a prescription or diagnosis, it's a customization menu to make your learning path better.

At this point, we should all be less interested in this myth than in its persistence. "Learning styles" is the "Bigfoot/Nessie/Flying Saucer" of education.
