WOW ... this was excellent and extremely informative. I hadn't thought about the twist of causing harm to the environment when substituting for leather. Very well done!!!

Thank you so much for watching! I still think if we consider all the energy, land, resources going into producing leather and then dying leather, the synthetic leather alternatives are still the lesser of two evils. However, really happy to see some real eco-friendly solutions being developed.

How does the technology to transform fruits and plants into leather work? Is it really sustainable? Does it have any impact on the environment? How much energy it requires? What kind of energy is used? And there are so many other questions I have about the producing process to call those vegan product eco friendly.

Adidas has a vegan line of products which are made out of mushrooms. Vegan leather is made out of organic materials and some now are making it out of mangos (in the Netherlands) and cactus (in Mexico). The great thing about vegan leather is that it uses much less water to produce than real leather and it's definitely more eco-friendly.

Very well done, thanks. my only thing is if you are trying to be environmentally friendly just use real leather. it's a by-product of cows and what would it be used for otherwise. all these vegan alternatives must use a lot of energy and must be expencive. in sted of buying an expensive designer bag gut buy a nice designer bag that is made out of real leather and donate the money to an organization that plants trees, that would probably be your best option. I am not against vegans by absolutely no means but I don't really understand vegan leather.

Fruit-based leathers and cork are not very mainstream and are thus still very expensive. So today, the great debate of two options: animal vs synthetic leather... it's a tough debate for sure. There is a third option with 2 sub options -- recycled synthetic leather. 1) old windshields upcycled to make synthetic leather, 2) recycled pre or post-consumer polyester mixed with recycled polyurethane to make synthetic leather. What do you and your viewers think about these? Also, there is a fourth option: recycled animal leather. It is composed of old scrap animal leather and post-consumer recycled polyester to make new material. Would you and your viewers agree that using recycled materials, whereby the recycled material composition is maximized, does more environmental cleanup overall?

Many objections to real leather is the killing of the animal in the first place. Also the less then optimal conditions in which the animals are raised and housed. It’s an ethical emotional thing. I’m sure processing real leather is quite costly too. You’re better off using the whole hide, hair and all. Many designers are using whole hides. They are much more economical and less processing. You could make jackets, purses, upholstery accents etc. I’ve seem hide purses and they look nice.

The animals are not killed for their hide, they are killed for the meat The hide can be dumped in landfill or made into leather, better to use it than dump it so that it rots and gives off methane

Leather is a natural by-product of the meat industry. Leather good manufacturers are the reason the hides of various animals are not piled into huge waste which would be burned and effect the environment. We create beautiful products with hides - which makes the leather products sustainable. In the process we help in circular fashion. On the other hand "Vegan Leather" is actually plastic which will never be as sustainable as Genuine Leather. Using PU and calling it Vegan Leather just effects the image of Genuine Leather Products. There is no such thing as "Vegan Leather".
