Have a wave attacks after a round and reduce minions and foot soldiers health to 1. Still have the players roll a damage die because that will show how many minions killed in a turn. Make turns last 15 seconds instead of 6 so it makes sense that you killed so many in a small period of time. Something to note about invasion wars, is that the advancing force must leave behind some of their soldiers after each successful siege to occupy the town/city, meaning that their forces diminish regardless of casualties as they advance. This can mean the invadee can leave only skeleton guards at each checkpoint the invaders occupy to conserve their strength to repel them at their capital, when the invaders have left most of their men behind.

Sieges and raids are a lot more common than battles in full scale war because they’re much less risky for everyone involved. Any competent commander would try to avoid a battle unless they’re absolutely certain they will win or they have no other choice. The easiest and more reliable way to win a war is to take your enemies’ territory (by taking their castles) and deprive them of their resources (by taking their crops).

Some people tell me that 90% of wars are caused by religion. I'm of the opinion that in 90% of those wars, religion was the excuse, not the reason. If a king wanted to expand and control a certain region, do you think the peasantry would fight and die because their king wanted them to? Leaders always needed to give more reason than that, so they would find something more convenient, such as different religions as the reason, different ethnicities, blame their neighbor for some crime committed against them, so on and so forth. A good example is the 1954 coup d'etat of Guatemala, which was backed by the CIA. The reasons/excuses given were because the current president, Jacopo Àrbenz, was planning to align the country with the Soviet Bloc, of which the was very little evidence. What IS known, however, is that the United Fruit Company (UFCO) was the one who lobbied the Eisenhower administration with these claims, and that Àrbenz was trying to pass labor and agrarian reform in Guatemala. UFCO had a virtual Monopoly on fruit, transportation, and exportation in Guatemala, so these reforms very much threatened them. Add to this that the director of the CIA, Allen Dulles, was a board member of UFCO, his brother was both Secretary of State and owner of a law firm that represented UFCO, and Ed Whitman, principal lobbyist for UFCO, was married to Eisenhower's secretary, they had a LOT of both the ears of and influence over the US government.

Well I want to give you heat for suggesting that high level magic wouldn't see use. That's just not true. If anything the presence of magic would be an accounted for aspect of war and military tactics in Faerun or whatever DnD context would look more like modern warfare and less like Medieval. Both armies would field mages seeking to neutralize the opposing sides magic. Mages would be used like artillery and mass formations would be rare given how vulnerable they would be to side artillery. Covert actions and mobility would be important to victory and shock troopers meant to rush headlong into battle would like be outfitted and trained to survive magic attacks. i could even see elite shock troopers being given anti-magic field projectors.

As a level 20 noble sorcerer I managed to use the meager army of my home kingdom and the ability to true polymorph myself into a green dragon (because his draconic ancestor was green), to conquer the majority of the map

At 7:53. That's not what ruffles feather. That'd just rub them the wrong way. If you wanna ruffle feathers you gotta go for the Kenku.

According to Clausewitz, war is actually a logical affair, where it is the socially sanctioned means of conducting violence in order to acquire material, territorial, or political gains. So this makes this video an embellishment of this fact. Also very fantastical.

I know this is quite late to post on an old vid but if you're interested in a bonkers example of religious wargare, look up the Ikko-ikki in Japan.

Strangely enough, I'm about to start a campaign where I'm on a warpath against 'Elf Nazis' that have apparently been a secretive evil force for a long while in this world. They occasionally cause trouble just to remind others that they are still around. Their last 'occasional trouble' burned down the temple that was my character's childhood home and caused them to take an Oath of Vengeance.

202mc Yupp. It is however quite hillarious that you feel you need to ask. (Im not saying its unreasonable to ask, my point is more that its funny the internet is such a place that warrants your question.) :)
