So, what is winter like in central Portugal? Well, it has been a place of varying weather it seems, one minute there's frost on the ground, strong winds and rain then the sun comes out it's 20 degrees and we're in t-shirts. We've heard that the weather is particularly unusual this year (2024) and last year for that matter too! But, we're not complaining about the sunshine we're absolutely loving it, we've been able to work outside comfortably and we're getting a lot done on the farm, more on that soon...

Young Avocado trees need to be babied for 4-5 years in Portugal and must be planted in a sheltered place away from the wind facing south. During the winter, they should be covered and insulated to reduce frost damage. Most that thrive outside of the Algarve are planted in gardens close to houses (but further than 10 ft from a wall) or in green houses where they can get special attention. They are self pollenating but you get better fruit production when you plant 2 in close proximity but make sure they are the same type. Young trees that have been grafted onto root stock should produce fruit in 3-5 years but those grown from seeds can take 10 years or more. Avocado trees do not like the cold but also do not like the extreme heat. If grown in a greenhouse, they need to be grown in large/huge pots that can be wheeled outside so that they do not bake in the summer. I have not heard of anyone growing mangos outside the Algarve and even then they are grown in greenhouses. Good luck.

1:25 - This weather in February, that's been around since the end of January, is nothing to be happy about or to celebrate. More than 30% of the continental weather stations registered a heatwave, the longest being of 15 days, and believe it or not, it was in Penhas Douradas, at the top of the Estrela Mountain! Due to its extension, it was considered the most significant January heatwave since 1941. Only two southern stations registered a heatwave (Zambujeira and Mora), the rest were in Central and Northern Portugal. 22:15 - Yeah, when it starts snowing in the only ski resort in Portugal, the Protecção Civil closes the accesses to it. The absurdity of that situation has reached a point where It has literally become a meme.

Hey guys. You should clean the whole lake and make a natural beach. Buy two trucks of sand and you'll have a fantastic "beach". Going to the "Tower" the difference in temperature was shocking compared to your farm. 🥶🥶When I was young I broke the "Coxis" doing "Sku" (ski+cu)= Ski + ass (in Portuguese)🤣. Keep 💪💪

Our plan eventually is to make a beach there yes but at the same time we are also considering helicopter access to our lake incase of any future fires 🔥😬 I’ve damaged my coccyx too, bloody painful!! I did mine roller skating. We’re hoping to do a bit of sku… well hopefully more ski than sku before the end of winter this year ❄️☃️🤞

The weather is crazy... we are 90 minutes north of you in Oliveira do Hospital... our worry is that everything has flowered but there are no bees about... how will that affect us next year? Poly tunnels seem like a good solution... we see many locals around us using them and they seem to know what they're doing! We've spent 1000s of Euros trying to farm and managed to get 10s of Euros of food so far! 😅

On our farm it’s not that cold at all but the highest mountain in mainland Portugal (Serra de Estrela) near the top does get snow and does have a ski slope but it’s barely opened this winter as there hasn’t been enough snowfall it seems ❄️☃️
