In Poland some of us did it too. And we have 96% mostly. We call it "spirytus" (but it"s refering to all 90%+). I saw someone who drunk ~100ml at once... It may be impressive (coz of burning effect), but it have less alco than 250ml 40% that many Poles at one time of thier lifes tryied to make empty in one try ("zerowanie na hejnał"). And there is some videos from Poland and Russia where someone drunk whole 500ml vodka... That's much more etanol than from 100ml 96%. And at events some drunk up to 1l of vodka, but in many hours.

I use to drink like one or two shots. Maybe 100ml? The way i saw it was this... All alcohol was disgusting so might as well get the process done ASAP. Cheap too. Yet I would absolutely have a chaser on hand. I actually found other alcohols to be much harder. Everclear is so strong that it just burns like hell. Also your stomach will hate you. Definitely do it with some type of starch or fiber in ya or be ready to deal with a very upset stomach..

It’s a great team-building game with friendly competition and not at all any hazing or toxic peer pressure! In all seriousness, for the younger guys reading this, don’t do that. Everclear can actually hurt you. The military is a different breed and eventually do not have regard for their own mortality. Do not read this thinking it is cool or cute. Me writing this is not meant to glorify alcoholism, but instead to make light of our own stupidity. What we did was potentially dangerous. Yes, spirytus/everclear can be extremely dangerous especially if you are a woman or have low body mass. I recall that there was an entire movement to ban incredibly strong alcohols in Australia because a girl actually died of alcohol poisoning after her 18 birthday. Some of her friends brought spirytus to her party, were drinking it straight and gave it to her. She was never taught about alcohols or safe drinking (her parents were pretty prude IIRC) not to mention even drinking before so she thought this was normal and drank a few shots in short order. Next thing she felt tired, went to sleep and never woke up. So yeah, high proof alcohol can be extremely dangerous

Fun Fact: Its "only" 95% because 95.6% alcohol is the maximum concentration that can be obtained from common distillation methods. This is due to the tendency of alcohol to hold on to a very small amount of water very strongly at very high concentrations of alcohol. Anything more concentrated either is very expensive and requires alot of steps and special chemistry equipment, OR will result in a very very small amount of benzene (a known carcinogen) still in a large enough concentration to cause serious health issues. The "absolute limit" is 99.7% simply because of how much water is in the air, but at that concentration it is considered "anhydrous" (without water)

@Post Punk 69 and others you’re both wrong. You must hold your breath while drinking spiritus so technically speaking neither inhale or exhale. Just hold it. The reason is very simple, ethanol vapour is heavier than air at room temperature and it vapours quick hence when you inhale, it may “push the air away” from your lungs. Moreover the vapour gets almost immediately into your blood system so you do the math… anyway spiritus was not made to drink straight, it’s intended to be infused and diluted and then it tastes like a dream SO PLEASE USE AS INTENDED. People who think they’re tough are the reason that spiritus is prohibited in some lands. I’ve seen some idiots who thought they were tough knocked down unconscious after 3 shots. A buddy of mine and I built a reflux still in the eighties. When we ran it we had no idea the distillate was nearly 190 proof. We tried a hygrometer and it dropped to the bottom of the graduated cylinder so hard we thought it might have broke. I sampled as we made the run and had 5 shots and went right out of my mind - then a buddy stopped by and asked me to go diving. He didn't know I was drinking and I was out of my mind so I said yes. It was all I could do to float in 3 feet of water and drift with the surge. It's a bad story that ended well but I never distilled anything again. My first buddy had gotten 40 oz of distillate and diluted it to 80 oz, it was still too strong. He never distilled again either and went on to become a brewer for a microbrewery, I went on to dive commercially for nearly 30 years (never drunk or impaired).

When I drink liquor this strong (not that I usually do) I find it best to drink straight from the bottle. This is because you can prevent any air from mixing which makes the alcohol not evaporate. It's mostly the alcohol vapour causing the burning sensation.

At my party I set up my drip tower and my friends and I got shit faced. The psychoactive substance in absinthe comes from wormwood. It's called thujone. Even the highest thujone content absinthes in the world do not contain enough thujone to cause a psychedelic reaction. The reputation came about because before absinthe was created, Paris had wine bars everywhere. One year there was a bad harvest, and no wine. But they had mid quality, high-test, brandy with an alcohol content around 80%... Almost as high as Everclear. They added herbs, and got smashed, hard,and acted like fools, and so absinthe got it's reputation as a "psychodelic" that would make you act like lunatics. Do some research, don't just listen to myths and legends. I've had absinthe all over Europe and here in the US, and I've researched it's history pretty extensively.

196 proof is the highest you can actually get due to physics/chemistry. But exposure to air drops it to 190 pretty quickly. If you are curious it's cause it forms an azeotrope with water and is deliquescent to a slight degree.

As a teen I drank about 2 shots worth of pure ethylene glycol for some reason and got ethylene glycol poisoning if you don’t know what that is it’s basically a slightly different type of alcohol from what humans drink which is ethyl alcohol but they are very similar ethylene glycol is just used in more industrial things like anti freeze. I was sick for several weeks afterwards my liver and stomach lining are both permanently damaged. Pure alcohol is no joke.

Actually you can consume it directly with some precautions (my friend told me this - they were drinking clean spirits while being students): 1. Prefer drinking it cold 2. Do not breathe for several seconds after drinking or you will have a chemical burn of your throat 3. Drink it and then drink some water. Actually clean spirits cannot be consumed directly by human body, so you need to drink water after it to make it less strong inside you and get the effect :) If you don't, you will still get some effect because it will take the water it finds in your stomach, but it's too few and you will probably get poisoned and feel very bad. 4. You need very few spirits and a lot of water, really. Around 1:5-1:10. 5. Don't use sparkling water with it. You will get much stronger effect than you expect, and you will feel very bad afterwards. BTW drinking alcohol of this of concentration is extremely harmful for your body and brain. Don't do it unless you really know why you may need it. And even in this case don't do it.
