Instead of asking “why does my daughter want expensive skincare as a child”, I think the mother need to ask herself “why does my 9 year old have a smartphone with TikTok installed”. I honestly believe that the parents are the ones to blame for this. Kids are reflections of their parents, and if the mother’s first reaction is to film her discontent, I’m not surprised that the kid is online all day long. I don’t know the woman personally, of course, but I think that this is what’s happening.

in my opinion, its really the parents’ fault. its on them to sit down with their child and talk about how much money they have, manage their social media usage, and know their childrens’ interests before getting unreasonably upset when they see their wishlist. majority of these children arent even expecting more than 1-5 items on the list depending on the price, and if they’re honestly expecting the whole list, again, thats on their upbringing. stop blaming children for their parents’ errors.
@queenofhorror29 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don’t think it’s ok for these parents to be calling their children “delulu” and “spoiled” on social media. If they’re really upset about it, they should talk to their children privately. The internet is just gonna be mean to their kids.

Exactly! I feel so bad for these kids, I didn't grow up on social media or watching influencers so I never had any makeup- And I'm really happy with how I'm turning out! ( As a 14 yr old), now that I do have TikTok I look for stuff that fits my interests, aka animal videos and shows I watch; and I don't let big influencers affect my lifestyle. But that's only because I'm mature enough to do that and because I grew up building my own experiences first and finding things *I* genuinely liked. A lot of kids don't get to have that now, so it's turned out like this, and it makes me so sad....

I’m just so sad because when I was about 11, because of bullying, I decided I would abandon all my childish interests and act more grown up and like the girls around me. So I asked for off the shoulder shirts, make up, Teen magazines and shape wear on Christmas. I got what I asked for and did use it but I felt miserable. Now at 18 I started allowing myself what I like and I’ve asked my parents for a remote controlled Mater from Cars and a book about dragons. I’m reclaiming my childhood because I couldn’t embrace it when I should’ve. I’m so sad for the children that similarly to me at that age feel the need to adjust their interests to fit into a mould created by society or rather the influence around them

I hope these parents take accountability and ask themselves “why is my child asking for these things instead of toys?” Your kid isn’t going to act like a kid when they are on social media. We need to preserve our children’s innocence and social media crushes that for them. Edit: I think it’s really sad that there are people in the replies saying that children who are 10 and up shouldn’t be playing with toys. If you are a 10 year old that doesn’t want to play anymore then you are playing too much video games or you have access to the internet. I stopped playing with physical toys when I was 13 almost 14, no internet and limited access to video games. I’m an adult now and know that I shouldn’t have had the internet till I was 15, you are supposed to live care free as a child, not worrying about the internet as a kid. bro, getting pets where I live is more pricey than getting skincare products so that's not too crazy. It just shows that a lot of kids in general don't know the value of money. I wanted science lab equipment (like microscopes and tesla coils), electric guitar sets, horror videogames, etc. as a kid which was unreasonable for my family who's mildly poor, then I grew older and wanted the newest phones, an iPad, a laptop, good quality headsets etc. when I was a preteen, the only difference is the kind of products gen alpha are asking for, they're still unreasonably pricey and they can't guarantee that they'll still be into those brands 5 years down the line (like how some little kids back in the day would forget that they have to take care of the pets they asked for christmas), it's not too different, really.

So they're little adults.

Incredibly grateful to have been 9 years old in 2009. I think us older zoomers were the last generation that got to have a childhood free from smartphones and social media addiction before slowly getting introduced to that stuff as preteens/teens

Same, was 9 in 2005 and the most expensive things I wanted were American girl clothes for my doll or that cool American girl furniture (Kit and Kirsten all the way, yes I turned out gay and nonbinary) and like those really expensive chemistry sets that came with a microscope. What I got for the holidays when I was 9 I think was the Kirsten nightgown from my aunts and some books and I think maybe a Webkinz from my parents if I’m remembering correctly with my old ass brain, and candy, my parents always did the fun old fashioned candy, and I think 9 was around when my dad started this weird tradition of giving me kippered herring in my stocking because me and him were the only ones who liked it!

The thing that concerns me about all of these products is that it almost doesn’t matter if they’re useful or needed. Any of these could be replicated in a child-appropriate way if the kid really wants slippers or lotion. For them, it’s about the trendy brands and all of them have become a status symbol, even subconsciously.

The only reason they want it is because its popular. And parents don't set boundaries and tell them no because we've told them that it's "abusive" to lecture your kid.

@bunille if they think it’s popular and see other kids having it, and don’t really have a concept of money, of course they are going to want it. As a 27 year old on social media, I know why these kids want these things. I've seen the trends unfold, seen they type of status and lifestyle symbol these things represent. It's not mind boggling that a preteen would want things that are constantly advertised as the thing to have if you want to be popular, even if they make no sense for their age. I wanted business casual clothes in 2010 as a 13 year old. Did I work in an office? No. Was I influenced by media for people older than me into thinking i HAD to have a day to night wardrobe so I could hit the club after work? Absolutely.

When my sister was ten years old, and I was 12 years old and had just bought my first geode from a shop at Pike’s Place Market (in the PNW), the same Christmas, she rather uncharacteristically wanted a box of geodes that she could break open with a hammer. To be able to see the amethyst crystals inside. She wasn’t a handy kid with an interest in geology, I think she saw me buy an amethyst decoration for my desk and wanted to emulate the same decor item that I had because I was the cool older sister. After she got the box set for Christmas, the hammer smashing was actually a fun activity we got to do together on a cold January day outside. But when I think of social media driven Christmas lists, we also used to subscribe to American Girl doll collectors and naturally started asking for those even though my mom was shocked at the prices. However, most of our KZbin subscriptions were monitored by our parents, and we generally only followed people who made videos for kids. We’d have mandatory guided conversations at the dinner table with our parents about the content creators and we even learned how to categorize them (whether their channel was to sell toys, a “Let’s Play” channel, or a family vlog channel with an emphasis on kids lifestyle). We weren’t allowed to watch channels that we couldn’t describe their purpose. If we were caught watching a toy review channel and we couldn’t explain mass marketing terms, we weren’t allowed to watch. That didn’t stop us from clicking on videos that had nothing to do with our subscriptions; I was introduced to The Hunger Games at the tender age of ten through the trailer for the movie which went viral. Naturally I had to read every book before the movie came out and excitedly comb through all available marketing material I could find, though my mom was leery at first about me reading a dystopian book about a teenager forced to kill other kids. Another caveat of being such a reader was thinking I was mature enough for all kinds of books I probably shouldn’t have been reading at the time. After The Hunger Games came the Twilight series when I was 11. This bad romance gateway drug was how I ended up slipping Fifty Shades of Grey into the Barnes and Noble basket when I was 12, assuming it’d be no more steamier than Twilight, since it was next to the book in the store. When my dad discovered the book I purchased that my mom didn’t catch, the book was taken away from me and while I think I was allowed Twilight because it contained werewolves and vampires, Fifty Shades of Grey was a hard no, and we still have a good laugh about how we ended up there to this day 😂

I'm almost thirty three and I'd be over the moon if someone bought me a giant stuffed duck. One of my dearest friends sent me a plushie whale in the mail as a present and it made my week. If someone brought me skin care I'd probably blink and go "are you trying to tell me something?" 😂 When I grew up skincare crap you didn't need was the shitty present my grandmother wanted my mom to get me for special occasions and I just prayed she'd smuggle me a REAL present (like a chocolate bunny or a new book) once Granny dearest left the room.

When I was 9, for Christmas, I got a "Loving Family Dollhouse" set that included all these cool extra add-ons. I kept that thing clear up until I was 16 before handing it down to a cousin. Kids all wanting those “UGG slides” is too funny to me! 😂 They’re basically the exact same slippers myself and most middle aged women or older people in general get every Christmas. Previously I’ve mistakenly worn them out of the house and immediately upon the realization, rushed home to change them because wearing them out of the house would have been humiliating! I guess I should have been totally rockin’ those slippers while out in public!

I'm a gen zalpha (I'm not sure if I'm gen alpha or gen z.) and I usually put stuff like: plushies, an anime/vocaloid figure, manga, posters, sanrio stuff, cute room decor, and a shirt on my lists. I would NEVER put skincare, makeup or anything "trendy" or too expensive on it.

Do you know what I got excited about when I was nine years old during Christmas time? A Nintendo Wii! That’s all I wanted. Not no skincare stuff or Ugg slippers. Dior lip oil? No, gurl, you’re getting Lip Smacker!!! Kids don’t act like kids anymore…it’s unfortunate. :

Same here!!! I remember going to a sleepover around 2008 and being so jealous of the Wii my friend had, so I really wanted a Wii and Mario Kart for Christmas 😂. My millennial parents struggled so hard with the recession that year, and I think ultimately it was my grandparents who gifted me a Wii for Christmas since my parents kept scolding me on how expensive it was. The irony is that as a child, I feel like it was the most disappointing feeling in the world being gifted clothing from grandma, or skincare and body lotions from your aunt. Now, it's apparently the new exciting norm??? Some of these luxury brands cost more than what my *entire* yearly Christmas haul would've cost my parents and relatives combined. 10 year olds asking for $150 gift cards and $250 Uggs?!?! Like girl, bye.

Fr tho getting a WII, Nintendo DS/3DS, or a new game for it was honestly the best thing ever to get as a kid, nowadays kids just want what they see on TikTok or whatever

How is wanting to take care of your skin wrong
@worstusernameintheworld9871 Жыл бұрын
@@Namiosoexactly, the only thing that's disappointing is expecting to get the most expensive brands. Then again, kids don't know the value of money. I wanted phone controlled robots, the newest phones, and an electric guitar complete with an amp when I was a kid even though my family was poor, it's no different back in the day and it's the parents who have to teach their kids that expensive doesn't always equate to "better". additional note: I also had acne since I was 11 so a preteen wanting skincare products to reduce it is completely understandable! They just need to know that not all brands are safe for preteen skin and they can find cheaper alternatives that are just as useful. Don't shame the kid for wanting to take care of themselves, shame the parents who don't restrict their internet access and ignore their kid when they want to be excessive consumerists.

As a gen alpha, this makes me so sad. You know what’s sadder? I was planning a birthday party today and I searched up “things to put in (insert my age) gift bags” cause, yk, it’s expected at my age, and it was all skincare. Drunk elephant. Bubble. It’s so sad, my friends still play with toys for crying out loud, and while I outgrew it, kids my ages should be playing with toys, it’s expected. I’m young, why is playing with toys and doing kid things illegal now? These people are convincing themselves to miss out on their childhood because of grown influencers who don’t do kiddish things, as adults? It’s not rocket science, act your age! It’s okay to be mature, but your still however old you are.

As a middle schooler I do want things like stuff on the list but I also have that child in me. Some kids my age have bad break outs so if they asked for skin care that would be fine . I did ask for things like face masks but only because I like to have reading spa days just for the fun of it! So I personally agree to disagree. I don’t really see why they would ask for skincare for Sephora at 9 though.
@--Soukoku--10 ай бұрын
Omg these children are... insane. Man, im freaking 17, nearly 18, and all i asked for last Cristmas was a few new manga, a cosplay for fun (me and my friends love cosplaying), and you know what else? A camera. Not a phone - a ligit Polaroid camera. These children low key actually scare the living day light outta me💀
@ningenshikkaku20429 ай бұрын
I'm 24 and my skincare product is non-existant. My perfume costs like $3. The most expensive piece of clothing I have is one winter jacket that is actually practical. These kids want these dumb skincare products and expensive ass jewelries/clothes while me, a grown adult, was excited for a goddamn Logitech steering wheel set.

When I was first approached for a gift over $100, we had a conversation & they knew that & a stocking would be all they would get. I also explained how many hours I had to work to pay for such expensive gifts. That put things in perspective fairly quickly. We are a single income family & most of their friends have two incomes.
