Love seeing experienced overlanders transitioning back to ground tents. Personally, I think RTT’s have a few benefits, but are mostly show over function. A big time price tag, a large, wind resistant weight on top of your vehicle, climbing up and down a ladder in the middle of the night, inability to stand, and having to do a take-down every time you move your vehicle. The set up time of these hub style tents are a game changer, and I’m very happy I made the move back to one.
@g4yrut2 жыл бұрын
As a side note, if anyone is interested in a budget friendly alternative, Gazelle makes a hub style tent very similar. They have both a 4 and 3 man version. So far, held up very well throughout two years of abuse, the YKK zippers have worked perfectly, and the floor is detachable allowing you to sweep out dirt.
@woolengrappler2 жыл бұрын
I love the simplicity of just throwing a tent on the ground. You can stand inside, there’s no need to haul a roof top tent or tow a trailer, it’s relatively cheap, keeps your roof rack relatively open, you can fit more than 4 people. The more I think about it the more a ground tent makes a lot of sense. If I didn’t have kids, I’d probably get a truck camper if a camper van, but a 4x4 van a roof rack and a bunch of camping gear is very appealing.

I received the shiftpod mini as a gift from my best friend. This is a great review on it. I will add that you may want to transport and store the tent with the bottom removed. I know it takes away from the convenience and part of the reason you’d want to buy this tent in the first place. The reason you want to do this is because the hub for the poles on the ceiling has exposed metal hoop. The hoop makes contact with the floor when the tent is folded up. After several trips and tossing the tent around the hoop wears down the tent bottom and creates a hole. The tent does come with a patch kit to repair the floor so you can take care of this problem.

This Tent looks like NASA made it. It's really cool. I prefer Quechua tents though. 2 seconds to set up (they pop up like popcorn you just toss them in the air), 15 to collapse, integrated water and windproof fly. They turn in to a wheel shape when collapsed, and they are fairly reasonably priced too. Also, they don't weight a lot for what they offer. I started with a small one-person tent for backpacking, and later upgraded to a bigger one. Highly recommended.

Went fishing and camping with my kids and it rained all night on us and was still raining in the morning when we were needing to leave. I was so thankful for the foot print and the ease of breaking it down that we didn’t get as muddy or wet as we would with a conventional style tent. The bag for the tent is ripping. The shift pod is basically a portable ice fishing house - very common up here in MN. They are insulated to hold heat in the winter. You can get cheap ones for about $300. Admittedly the shiftpod has a floor and bug netting but I I appreciate all your videos but I think these tents are (a) too expensive, (b) bulky, (c) heavy, and frankly not very easy to set up compared to many traditional ground tents. For $300 you could be in an 5 person Alps Taurus Outfitter with aluminum poles. That tent weighs 12lbs, packs down to half the size, is 10x8ft footprint size with a 6ft standing height and can be set up by my 13yr old daughter by herself (admittedly she is 2 merit badges away from Eagle Scout). Anyway - I love that you show all the cool stuff but some of it is not worth the extra spend over traditional stuff. But hey there are other channels for the boring cheap traditional stuff. Thank you always for your great and thoughtful content!

I love the fact that it's already been tested in so many great locations and conditions; King of the Hammers and Burning Man and mountain climbing and emergency rescues situations and disaster relief that's exactly what I've been looking for for so many years for 20 years now the perfect Four Season tent shelter for emergency situations and my gosh they've designed and built exactly what I wanted, what I had envisioned / designed in my head!! Carbon graphite struts and hubs, YKK zippers etc top quality materials everything space blanket materials for reflecting Heat and cold; "Space Age Tent Made With Space Age Materials for Space Age Conditions!!!" I just found the shift pod a week ago because I was looking for the absolute BEST Four Season shelter because I want to combine it with my invention, a Rocket Stove (in the-ground) Earthen Thermal Mass Heating System! It will heat a 100 +/- shelter easily, AND It will help keep it cool in summer also because Earth temps are always lower than ambient temperature... Tested in multiple locations king of hammers burning Man a lot of emergency situations they've improving intestine that's what I want to work with. They used YKK zippers and carbon graphite hubs and struts I was so impressed with her system just blown away like I had envisioned, EXACTLY what I envisioned An Ice Fishing Shelter Hub on steroids, that will be good for all ALL seasons Cold and hot weather both and high winds which I think we're going to be having to deal with more and more they're like a perfect emergency shelter and that's what I've been looking for for 20 years actually since I had a picture burned into my mind about 40 years ago of a bunch of tents across a pasture and I KNEW that they were refugees and if I didn't do something to help them they would die and then in the year 2000, 20 years later I had a powerful, -like real-time real-life Technicolor -like-I-was-there, vision of an underground house and a homeless Family. That shook up my world, charged me up and set me on a course that's included a website, a book, and a KZbin channel ALL with the same name; How To Get Out Of Babylon and ALL trying to figure out how to help homeless people in horrible and emergency situations. I think this is what I've come to other than building houses underground we need to have some shelter that will absolutely stand up to high winds and snow and ice and extreme temperatures; we will see heat and cold and this is like the most PERFECT thing I've ever found; "Space Age Tent Made With Space Age Materials for Space Age Conditions!!!"

Main benefit seems that it can be set up probably in 5 minutes, vs perhaps 10 for a more conventional tent (5 more minutes when packing up). I love the vertical "walls" as it gives more room. Nonethelss, I wonder how is ventilation when it is hot. How much air can it allow through? Then I went to the manufacturer's website. 6 to 8 weeks delivery and a price tag of $1500 USD.
