I was born intersex and doctors did all kinds of surgeries on me at birth. I almost died on the operating table. The doctors asked my mom if she wanted a daughter or a son and when she said daughter that's what they did surgery for. So now here I am identifying as a trans man and I have female genitalia. No ovaries or anything though. And no record of any of the surgeries. Fun times. I didn't even learn about them until recently when I came out to my dad as trans. You truly never know

S/he may have had androgen insensitivity syndrome which means that the body has XY chromosomes but doesn't respond to testosterone. The body and the genitals develop along default female lines albeit with possible malformations like no ovaries or uterus and a blind vagina or variation on that. If this is the case the person will need ostrogen as they can’t respond to testosterone. Sometimes it is not being forced except by nature.

I had no idea intersex was even a thing before this video, and that terrifies me. I've never been educated on intersex individuals, and I didn't even know situations like this could actually occur. It's sad to know that we aren't educated with this social knowledge, and I'm now going to do some research on intersex individuals so I can have a better understanding. Thanks for this video Buzz Feed. You learn something new every day.

I'm really glad I watched this video; even as a well-educated, young, openly LGBT person in a very accepting region of the UK, I often find that my awareness of Trans* issues is lacking. Although I'd heard the term 'intersex', I thought it was just an alternative name for transgenderism. I really think that we need more education about Trans* (and similar) issues - even within the LGBT community.

Chelsea Cash I also had no idea. I feel very ignorant and stupid now feeling like there were only 2 genders. I never really considered transgender a 3rd gender because it was just in in-between to what they were comfortable with and they usually identified one way or the other, but this is on a whole other level. I feel like I'm going to get hate for this, but if I do it's just because I'm not educated enough and that's my fault.
@gomika
@gomika 9 жыл бұрын
Fearl why would you get hate? Ppl arent born knowinf everything :) Besides, as you can see from this video, the medical community itself makes sure to alienate these individuals and sometimes performs these "corrective surgeries" on newborns without even the consent of the parents (!), so its normal to not know about it. Im so proud of Buzzfeed for doing this video. :)

I think it's awful they are doing surgeries without the consent of the person whose body it is...just leave the poor kids alone until they're old enough to decide which body parts they want to keep or remove! I remember learning about an intersex case study in psychology (they didn't tell us it was called intersex though) and about how they commited suicide from depression from being made to live as someone they weren't. It sucks!

These comments show so much ignorance. I'm trans myself, and yeah yeah I understand making fun of gender identities- "I identify as *insert household object here*" I understand that not all people agree with non-binary genders, and that's fine, that's your choice, your opinion, and I completley respect it. Here's the thing- you didn't watch the video. Being intersex is biological. And since you all seem so obsessed with biology, I would hope you'd know that. It's not an identity, it's something that they're physically born with.

Not a medical student yet then? abdominal, pelvic or undescended testes are associated with increased risk for testicular cancer. It's the reason why the testes are removed. Undescended testes in a non intersex male, are also either brought down through surgery into the scrotum or removed for the same reason (testicular cancer). I'm sorry Cipher (sp?) wasn't well counseled and perceived his doctor to be condescending.

I understand not wanting to circumcise your son, but to say there is no medical need for it is a stretch. Uncircumcised males are more likely to contract HIV among other STDs. They also have a risk for this thing called phimosis and even worse, paraphimosis, which uncircumcised men have no risk for. Also, smegma is nasty AF.

I'm a lot like Saifa! I'm an intersex trans guy who was CAFAB. I was raised as a girl, given estrogen and surgeries against my knowledge or consent, but I told my parents at the age of 3 that I was a boy. I felt very confused and upset about my body growing up (what I later discovered was gender dysphoria) but tried very hard to be the pretty little girl my parents wanted, despite hating it. I didn't find out about my condition until I was 25. I have CAH and PAIS. I've been transitioning on testosterone for a year now and much happier to finally be myself!

The only exception is when there is no family around and the patient can't make the decision, the doctor is in the obligation to act upon the benefit of that patient's life. Abdominal testicles have a much higher risk to turn cancerous later in life.

I'm a physician and I feel like I have to address a point regarding the surgical removal of the testes. Testes are normally located in the scrotum where the temperature is lower. If the testes are located anywhere outside the scrotum (where they are exposed to higher temperatures) it will increase the risk of developing testicular cancer anywhere between 20-50 times more than testes located in the scrotum. I just wanted to clear that up, it's not a myth, it's not something doctors do because it's more convenient.

Well. They are not testicles after all. So you cannot make assumptions like that. And even icd(which is really conservative as you know) recommend to leave them until 30s. And being on hrt increases risks of breast cancer. So your argument doesn't make any sense

Take a pregnancy test? What does that have to do with cancer? And why are bringing up HRT into this? I'm confused. And they are testes, testes are not designed to be in the body due to high temperature damaging them, so having them in increases the change of them being cancerous up to 50 times. They are removed due to this risk.

Yes, at 80 years old in 2023, I was born during WW2. I’m what was known as a hermaphrodite back then. The way I describe myself today, I tell people that my parents couldn’t decide if they wanted a girl OR a boy, so they made me, a girl AND a boy. The doctor saw male genitalia and announced, you have a boy. Sadly, my male parts are just for show because I’m sterile and unable to reproduce any babies. I knew at the age of 4 that it felt like a girl was trapped inside my body. Life was a living hellish nightmare. My teenage years was even worse because I never went thru male puberty. I had more female facial features with a soft feminine voice. I hid in the proverbial closet to save myself from being bullied or worse. Finally, at 72 years old, my brain must have thought, you haven’t been thru puberty yet and decided to put me thru female puberty instead. So over a 6 month period, my body changed completely into a female one. I have an hourglass figure, beautiful breasts, hips, thighs and a nicely padded bottom to sit on. I feel like a teenager again, this time in the correct body, except for a male reminder between my legs. Because of 2 heart birth defects, no doctor will preform surgery on me, to correct that mistake. I am tho, the happiest I’ve ever been and finally as the woman I was born to be.

Ok, since a lot of people in the comments aren't getting the point, I'll try to explain this. These people aren't "identifying" as something, being intersex is a biological thing, they were born with already mismatched parts. For example in the video there was a person with a vag and internal testicles, and another one who had testicles and xy chromosomes but also breasts. They were born that way. It's completely biological, not like, say, a person with xx chromosomes and all the lady parts who identifies as a guy. Hope that cleared it up

Brene, that's... somewhat true. Except there's probably a vast majority of 'today's transgenders' who do NOT have any biological reason. Now, this is my bigot self speaking without science on this part, but I believe it's a lot of wannabe's who are seeking desperately to label themself as something 'unique' and so, let's go with being trans! I mean, we're also seeing things like 'born female, identifies male, but does everything to the female binary' and the reverse. these people are I'm almost certain not trans, but attention seekers. and I've done the research, most of the time, it's noticeable in MALE to female transgenders that they have a smaller brain, but less gray matter in their brain and shorter brain and nerve receptors (similar to women) which besides the... 'societal' things like wanting to wear women's clothes, or dress like a woman, also adjusts chemical balances in the body, making them more receptive to estrogen still, problem is they lack the ability to produce enough on their own. I think the whole outpouring of 'trans' people are hurting actual transgenders and furthermore, actual intersex people. This video is not a good one though as they represent science incorrectly and acted like it was a horrible thing that they had the surgery done to them without permission when in all actuality they could be DEAD right now if they hadn't had it done.

its body vs mind. intersex people are born with both genitalia, some in or out...it depends and its different for each person. but a person who is intersex can also have gender specific DNA and a Gender specific brain. so lets say a person with visible male genitals and inside female genitals, identifies as a female via brain and DNA but not between the legs. simple. but society says whats between your legs matters more than what your mind and DNA says.

I'm intersex, specifically XXY or Klinefelter's. I came into the world with male genitalia, but I've never felt like a boy/guy/man. It never made sense to me. I lived my life in that charade for most of my life, though, because I didn't know anything about transitioning until my late 20s. I'm 35 now, two years on HRT, and I finally feel normal and sane. Biology and neurology just aren't as simple as people think they are. Humans are a highly diverse species, with the highest rate of genetic anomaly (and I don't mean that negatively). We have so many different mental and developmental conditions, and yet being intersex or transgender is wrong or impossible? People can deny it all they want, but we exist, and we're not freaks, predators, or deviants. We're just people who came into the world a little different than everyone else, and all that negative bias and naysaying makes life difficult for us. Our suicide rate wouldn't be so high if we were treated like anyone else; but thanks to science and medicine we have a better chance of being ourselves authentically and optimistically. Some of us are gay, some are straight, some are bisexual, pansexual, asexual, etc. There's no standard mold. In fact, we break the mold set upon us quite regularly. Human diversity should be celebrated, not condemned. The biggest obstacle right now is the social/political situation where our rights are being squandered due to such unnecessary fear and hate. All we want to do is live our lives in peace and in love. We don't want to impose or cause distress, and we don't want to diddle anyone's kids in the public bathrooms. Being intersex and trans isn't a curse, it's just what Nature gave us. It's society that tries to tear us down, threatens us, and tries to intimidate us into self-destruction. If you're someone who does these things you must be miserable, because only a miserable person would want to evoke misery out of others. Unlike many, I don't hate you for it. In fact, I hope you find your peace. We all deserve that. We all deserve love. If there's no peace and love in you, that breaks my heart. Something or someone in your life has darkened your soul, and that's a shame; but you can redeem yourself. You can always choose to be a better person. No matter how much anyone has treated me poorly for who I am I would never turn away if they genuinely wanted to change for the better. That's what we should always do for each other - heal each other - even after the worst damage.

I'm a simple normal naturale female. So many things just really new for me to hear, I mean you hear sometimes something here and there but nothing in the schools for example. I have to say, that is a shame in 2020 that the society was hiding so many existed things about us humans, treating as non-existent! We are all people, all humans, we all have the right to know, that the nature creates different people, not only 100% man or a woman. I can't even imagine how complicated can be a life for many people who didn't fill in this female/male based society... I'm sending love to everyone! 😊💗 Thanks for the video, very important to have a voice of you guys.

Sure, I had body hair at age 9 and facial hair at age 11, but stopped growing at age 12, never developed an Adam's Apple, never developed abdominal muscles, and was even weaker than some girls. I've had periods since I was in middle school and at age 37 I grew breasts, wide hips, a curvy soft bum, thin skin, soft skin, soft body hair, and have way more regular periods with blood. Even before I turned 37, I have lactated, had night sweats, and hot flashes as well.

If you think about it gender is a social construct. There is nothing necessarily "Male" about muscles of "female" about boobs. We just decided to create these labels. People do not fit into boxes as many like to think and our society has heavily implemented gender roles but I think its time we all accept one another and realize there is nothing weird or strange about this.

I don't know if I had many manly things, my back is big and I had a little of hair under my chin. I ended doing it bc my mom insisted. That makes me intersex? Plot twist, I'm trans and in hormones. I'm sure it was more along the line that the doctor wanted to make sure he wasn't teased, because children can be huge assholes like worse then adults sometimes. But they should have asked for his opinion and should be his choice if it's a non-life threatening thing.

But, you need to realize this is also buzzfeed and they misrepresent science. There is a strong risk of cancer and other infections as they've had cases from leaving intersex babies alone. What generally happens is one set of genitals turns dominant and the other shrivels and dies, often leaving them with things like bladder infections, and yes... cancer. The body still recognizes it as a 'wound' that needs to heal and keeps trying to replicate over and over. Now this doesn't happen to every intersex person, but it happens enough that they do it less risk the child's physical health later. Now we're focusing and pretending mental health and SJW advocacy > science and physical health. I know, shame you couldn't choose for yourself if you wanted to be a boy or a girl The only thing that would have helped this yet they ignored was that USUALLY the doctors will resort to making them women rather than men. It's seen as easier to make intersex babies change to female than it is to change them male.

She said “it for a cyst or something “ and kept the conversation moving like she didn’t want me to inquire more. I’ve always felt like a stranger looking back at myself in the mirror and my hormones have always been wack. I feel like I need to revisit this convo with her but I don’t know if she will tell me, and if the video is true, the doctors might not either. My head and heart are swimming
