Maybe because they live in LO and are insulated from Portland/Gresham/Beaverton/StHelens,Troutdale/Clackamas… they didn’t show the broken glass in the street from someone breaking your car window while at the courthouse paying a parking ticket, because you were prevented from leaving the Kinkos and walking up to your car because of a people action from a drugged out guy with a knife and they had the street blocked off( but still wrote parking tickets😡) , Starbucks STARBUCKS has closed 4 stores in downtown Portland, one last week in the Pearl due to crime, it was in their statement.

My wife and I spent a week in Portland this summer. We stayed off Pioneer Square and walked everywhere in we went down town: 1) Down town is not safe. The open air drug scene is crazy and the level of homeless people needing mental help intervention is off the chain. We saw several homeless people with weapons screaming at and accosting passers by. 2) The homeless encampments are not gone. Almost ever street had tents and trash everywhere. 3) We didn't see a single cop while we were there. 4) Graffiti was out of control. Even big beautiful clock towers were defaced and every building was tagged. 5) The vandalism is not over. We were there the week after July 4th and just a few days prior a group of black clad people were breaking windows down town. Probably in response to the July 4th holiday. In my opinion, this video doesn't show the down town Portland I saw while I was there.

Agreed, I'm from Springfield, Illinois, born and raised, and since the great recession happened in 08', I noticed alot of homelessness started to rise up in this small city, to my surprise ofcourse. Esspecially after I graduated HS in 2015, it's been 7 years and homelessness has gotten alot worse, tighter after 2020. I haven't been to Portland Oregon since my summer with my Pops in 2011. Back then I noticed alot of Homelessness back then so I'm not surprised it's gotten worse 11 years later. 🤷🏾‍♂️ go figure.

Most commercial leases downtown aren't being renewed. Everyday I see a new sheets of plywood covering up a broken windows. Homelessness, drug activity and crime is still a huge problem. Lack of affordable housing, traffic, high taxes, lots of government control and regulation. Portland's heydays are behind her.

We went to Oregon on vacation in July and it was not nice in Portland. We went to voodoo donuts, which were good, but there were so much homeless the donut shop needed a security guard gate keeper bouncer guy to protect the shop. We did not feel safe at all. Just driving from the airport to our hotel we saw so much graffiti, trash, many tents and homeless walking around. We went to salt and straw ice cream and just waiting in line there were homeless everywhere. It was nice to see church groups in Gresham and the park by the ice cream shop helping the homeless. But wow, Portland is not a healthy city. We went to the Columbia river gorge and saw the many falls which were beautiful and we went to cannon beach to see haystack Rock and we went down to sea lion cave, Crater lake, Mt Hood and the Bob sled ride there. The Washington rose garden was awesome. So outside Portland was ok but the city itself was not clean and was the worst part of the trip.

So no we don't recommend that donut shop or that area of town or most of Portland we saw as there were many things disgusting. Maybe portlanders think it's normal to have nasty inappropriate donuts? As a realtor, you did an excellent job of showing the beauty of Portland. As a realtor, you skillfully left out the nitty gritty of Portland. What you did show was absolutely true about Portland in every way until the riot and lawlessness that prevailed turned this once beautiful city into something not shown here. All you have to do is read the daily news to count the number of murders, car jackings, hit and runs and muggings, robberies, and assaults that take place. Yes, it's a beautiful place with a culture of crime that keeps even locals away. That emptiness mentioned is caused by fear of downtown. The homeless have taken it over. Visitors from other cities write letters to the local newspaper stating their shock at the 3rd world atmosphere that exist in far too many parts of the city. I have friends that live just outside the city 20 miles away. They say they won't enter unless they are armed, even in daytime. Forget going here at night. Just a few days ago a 27 year woman had here nose shot off driving down a city street , getting caught in the cross fire of gang violence. I don't like to bad-mouth Portland, but this video is misleading.

That was also the case in that incident where it was a homeless person with mental/drug issues. The local store owners and residents have been asking for more police presence in this area in order to prevent this known area of incidents. I visited Portland from Switzerland this year, I have experience living in the USA, but what the hell did happen to the US??? It did not feel as safe as before. Yes, I am spoiled because in Switzerland we do not have homelessness or crazy drugs addicts running the streets and our inflation is only around 3-4 percent, but come one, how can you allow this to happen?? People are literally being abandoned , cant they seek help from the government to get housing? I dont understand the U.S system and why there is no true welfare system, it would keep the streets safe and less homeless people would be on the streets. I also fear that there is a dominating system of rather living on the streets instead of making use of health insurance and getting your mental health right. I only stayed in my hotel and had food outside, but thats it, I felt so worried as a woman alone. After that I was in New York and San Francisco, same uneasy feeling. The US can do better.

I lived 30 years in Portland with my husband who was born there and is a 4th generation Portlander. We moved out of state finally after not being able to put up anymore with the destruction of the city by the riots, the crime, weak leadership, taxes, police defunding, homeless camps everywhere including in our suburb in Tigard, weak public schools, etc. The city absolutely changed and is unsafe and not very nice anymore. Thank you for the informative video from someone who actual lives in the area! Portland looks beautiful! It seems like a great city. It has so many cool neighborhoods, events, parks, universities etc. Public transit seems great as well! Prices and cost of living seems not as ridiculous as many cities. It amazes me how many comments on this video are negative...the US as a whole has a housing problem and Portland is not worse than other places from my time visiting there. As someone who lives in a different one, people just like hating on liberal west coast cities. I bet 99% of negative comments have no real basis, just people enjoying trolling and playing into their own worldview and somehow "owning the libs". Anyways, just want you both to know, as someone likely moving to Portland in the near future, this was a helpful video, no matter how many dumb repetitive comments are posted about the supposed "ruined city". Ignore the baseless hate!

I've lived in Portland OR for the last 20 years. And it's gone downhills big time. Before that, I used to live in Eugene, OR. I currently live in SE Portland area, only 2 blocks away from my house, the whole block is filled with houseless people encampment, every couple of days, there's some burning and they emptied their ghost RV's black/gray water down the road. The smell would waft through the air for days. I used to be able to walk through my neighborhood around 10 years ago without being afraid. Now, after being burglarized twice, and being hustled a few times (also some people actually hustled me for being an Asian woman) I have to be extra careful to walk alone. My property tax is over 6k a year although my house is modest, and water/sewer bill is over $500 if since there's more than 2 person(s) household... (Thanks, Portland Water Bureau. LOL). The electric bill is going up as well as gas. For someone who's firmly in the 'middle' class, it is a scary place to be (hence I'm actually currently looking to buy outside of Portland, OR LOL). Also, I'm not surprised there are so many houseless people everywhere I go. A friend who's still renting, his 1 bedroom apartment is around $1.7k a month plus utilities. You have to earn a lot of $$ to live comfortably here. (Just like everywhere, really) But so far, the way crime has gone up esp. the last 5 years and it seems that things are getting worse...I'm not surprised many are angry and frustrated. Even those who are in low-income housing subsidized by the state, a bunch of them are going to be houseless soon since the even those buildings' rents have been raised over 30%. You're calling people ignorant, but if you just live by where we live, you'll see people are not exaggerating the situation at all. Or perhaps you're probably one of the privileged with high earning so you can afford living in Portland, OR and close your eyes and ears.

@@tracys169 I don't think your particular experience is invalid, and I'm sorry that things are less safe than the past. I wish things were better. At the same time, taking a read through the huge amount of negative comments on this video, and there are sooo many, a lot of them seem like "trolling" and not really representative of reality. I'm not saying Portland is perfect or has no issues, but Portland is not worse than other big cities. The comments on this video are just ridiculous. Saying things like every single day in portland in every part of the whole city there's zombie drug addicts on manic rampages and you can't walk anywhere in downtown without stepping on a thousand used needles and every sidewalk and park in the whole city is a tent encampment and every car is broken into every single day, etc. Idk it just paints a picture that is way more bleak then reality. I've lived in many parts of the SF bay area a lot of my life, spent a lot of time around Berkeley, south sf, oakland, etc. Portland is not bad compared to that and even those places are not unlivable. The fact that there's hundreds of these comments on this video is insane, Portland doesn't deserve the disproportionate amount of hate it gets. You can name cities all over the country with the same or worse issues. New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, DC, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, LA, Oakland, etc. the list goes on.

I'm a proud Democrat and even I have concluded that Portland is a liberal utopian experiment gone wrong. The schools are broke, falling apart, and over crowded. The town had some great ideas concerning urban panning, but is far too accommodating of crime and degenerates. They've been jacking up taxes for homeowners, while allowing people to camp, defecate, fornicate, and do drugs in the streets. They keep opening new parks, while having no money to maintain or improve the existing parks and their aging facilities. What kind of town keeps building new parks, while closing existing aquatic centers due to lack of funding? It's truly madness in this city. NW 23rd Ave is supposed to be the diamond of the city, but the street itself is crumbling and cratered with pot holes and you'll get harassed by a mentally ill person while lining up for your $10 scoop of ice cream. It's just a broken town that needs to revert to focusing on the fundamentals: law enforcement and maintaining existing infrastructure before building new parks and bridges. Sadly the schools are a lost cause due to the crippling pensions for retired school staff. Thanks boomers 👍

I've also been to London many times - you are correct. Drug use and possession of all illegal drugs has been legalized in Oregon - so you can shoot up anywhere you want without consequence. So they do. We even have free needle programs for them and it is not possible to arrest or stop anyone from shooting up right in front of Powells (I've seen this). Unfortunately, 1 year after we passing this idiotic law, drug overdose deaths are up massive amounts - over 1000 OD deaths in 2021. While politicians are asking for massive more money to keep expanding legal drug use in parks and sidewalks, people are dying in the streets faster and faster.

I drop my kids off every day for college downtown and feel fine about it, have walked around downtown, etc. It's obvious that revitalization efforts are underway and native Portlanders do talk about how much more empty it is than pre-pandemic. The Waterfront area seems to be up and coming. We moved from the L.A. area and were glad to leave behind the heat, the traffic (people still actually use their turn signals here!), the worries about water, and the cost of living. I lived and worked in Portland Oregon for 30 years. We downsized due to my husbands health and moved to Texas…we wanted to move back but now it’s gentrified…Greed and Over pricing ( by Design) has priced African Americans-Out! It seems like your invitation is for “White Americans-Only to Consider Portland as Home!“ That’s cool, however African Americans would like to come-HOME too! Please advocate for “Affordable Housing” Single Family Housing starting at 160k and up! The City Planners can make this happen!!! If we can put a man on the moon, we can certainly build affordable housing for all! I am not Angry just Passionate. 🙏🏾 🙏🏾

Hi Rose, sounds like you have some great memories of Portland. I'm sorry you had to move for health reasons. I advocate and love working with all types of people and I do regularly. I'm sorry you felt otherwise, that's not my intention. I definitely advocate for affordable housing, I think it's necessary for every city to have housing available for all income ranges in order to have a healthy local economy and vibrance of the city. It's a big issue but not one solved by any one person. Best of luck to you and keep your passion!

Hello...am interested in moving to Portland. My wife's family lives in Vancouver, B.C. and my daughter just moved to Redmond, WA. We currently live in Indianapolis and have narrowed our top 2 cities to Denver and Portland. We just spent 2 weeks in Denver, but although my wife wants to move there, I didn't like it at all. The air is very dry and I found out that living at a high altitude is very harmful to the eyes. I'm around 60 now and I read that Denver is the worst city in the US for eye health, and that Portland was in the Top 5 for eye health. To me it seems like Portland would be a much happier place for me. We also have a 10 year old girl that will start 6th grade, so we are looking for a good suburb close to Portland that has good schools. Would love to hear from you and get your take. Thanks, Dave

@superdave Portland has a lot of great neighborhoods with good schools. It really depends on budget and the type of lifestyle you want. Close to the city? more urban, walking distance to shops? or low crime suburbs? Send me an email and we can schedule a zoom to go over areas in more detail. aaron@aaroncullen.com

Unless you work downtown, there is not a good reason to go there. I live in southeast, and there are plenty of nice places to visit east of the (Wilamette) river. Can bike to the waterfront on the Springwater corridor (bike trail) or visit Powell Butte nature center in Southeast Portland. Plenty of cultural amenities on the east side also. I don't understand the obsession with downtown Portland.

I'm glad I visited Portland back in the 80's, nothing like it was then. Sad. I loved Saturday market but heard that it is no more? I live in Syracuse and we are starting to see more homeless out on the streets now that the weather is getting better. Homelessness and drug addiction should be made a priority in this country, they seem to go hand in hand.

I have lived in Portland since the 90's. I can tell you that Portland is just as bad as all the reports say. We had more murders in 2021 than Boston or San Francisco. We are on track to beat that number again in 2022 by a good 2 digit percentage. Portland experienced a net LOSS of population - primarily in people from 20-35 in 2021 and will likely see that again because affordability, crime, and the public schools are so bad. We still have riots as recently as March 2022 in different parts of the city. Police do not pull anyone over downtown - and car thefts are in the range of 1000 per month and rampant breakins of businesses and cars is a daily occurrence. Many small businesses and small tech companies have moved out of downtown. We have thousands of people living on our streets and greenways. Legalized drug use has led to a 20% increase in drug deaths. Our public school test scores are ranked WORSE than most red states despite having higher funding. You can get a high school diploma in Oregon without needing to read, write, or do basic math. Much of downtown is full of dangerously mentally ill people and we have daily assaults. I am trying to get out of Portland as fast as I can despite living here for 20 years. It's never been this bad and getting worse every day.

Sorry that's been your experience Matt. What part of Portland do you live in? We had demonstrations in March against gun violence but I didn't hear about any riots. For the population, that stat is misleading. During Covid lots of city centers had migration to the suburbs. Portland city lost residents but the suburbs gained a lot. Best of luck!

@@movingtoportlandoregon I live just outside the downtown core. We have had protesters walk through our neighborhood multiple times in 2022. Blocking streets illegally and becoming abusive to anyone in their way. They spray painting stuff up and deface stuff with political graffiti. Besides gun violence, lots of radical anti-supreme court damage (huge sprayed political messages on roadways, billboards, etc), and usually a small march or riot after any police shooting anywhere across the US. As for losing population, Portland had the 22nd largest population loss of any major US city (behind New York, LA, etc) - which is way bigger loss per-capita than most anywhere.

I love visiting Portland. But let's be honest guys you didn't show the real downtown at all. It gets pretty fucking bad and for you not show any of that is very weak. My friend's wife works at REI downtown in the pearl and i literally stopped in with him one day for 15 minutes while she was working and i saw some homeless dude shoving whole racks of clothes into a giant duffle bag and these people just let him walk right out of the store. It was totally insane. Never seen anything like it. I know that's not the only place it's happening either. Not to mention people getting their vehicles and catalytic converters stolen all the time.
