Definitely. Dogs and cats aren't for everyone, let alone ferrets. IMO, one of the best ways to see if you're ready for ferrets is to act like you're getting a dog. I say dog and not cat because ferrets are more work than a cat. They really should be as free roam as possible, which is not super hard if you ferret proof the room.

My ferret keeping experience. My 9 year old ferret, Snowball, died in my arms just 5 days ago. We spent 7 of the 9 years of his life together. Through his young years, he was terrible. Summer was awful, windows had to be closed because he liked to jump out of them. He destroyed everything, and had a terrible attitude when he got in trouble because of it. Of course, he was a side-kick to the main terror, Leto, his brother, who died 3 years prior to Snowball. After Letos death Snowball very much became my baby. There was no depression for Snowball after his brothers death, he just seemed to accept that I was his new best buddy, and its now my job to take on the role of what Leto provided him with. We played, slept in bed together, we went on walks together where he walked on a leash for miles without a care, where ever I was in the house, he had to be there too. For 3 years we were never apart. I had a blanket on my desk so when I was there, he could sleep there too, unless he wanted to sleep on my lap. He was the most loyal, loving, mommy's boy ever. He just wanted to give me kisses and be held. The days coming up to his death, he could no longer walk, or move. I did not sleep for 3 days, returning the loyalty I hand fed him and gave him water just to keep him going. He was due to be PTS on a Friday, which I did not want. He was suffering and I didnt want him to go to the vet where it was noisy and confusing for him. Thursday, 1am, he took his last breath in my arms. The day he died, I walked outside to see lots of yellow flowers blooming in the backyard. It felt like a reminder to smile, even though I was hurting terribly. He now in his urn sits on my desk, where he always loved to be.

I’m currently crying. I never had a ferret in my life but I know what it’s like to lose a pet. I lost my dog last month. We were best friends for ten years. She was more my dad best friend but when he wasn’t around, she mostly was around me more. But she was battle cancer for long time and we only saw the signs 4 months ago. And we had to move because my dad is in the military and we know she wouldn’t survive the road-trip because she would’ve been cramped in the truck with our other dog. She also get car sickness and she had a shatter leg from the cancer so it was best to just to put her down and not to prolong her misery. I miss her everyday it hard coming home knowing my best friend isn’t there to greet me.

@lollygameables46673 жыл бұрын
Ferrets are wonderfully trainable when it comes to nipping. In my experience there are two aspects - 1: Do not reward bad behavior and 2: Speaking 'Ferret language'. For the first, ferret babies will easily get bored or just want down and so will nibble to get what they want. Do not put them down until they have calmed down. Simply hold your ferret by supporting the back and holding them in the front under their 'arms' and wrapping your fingers gently around the upper body. They can try and turn to nip you, but they will not succeed. Only when they calm down do they get down. Second - 'ferret language'. 'Scruffing' was shown but that isn't the end of it. gently lift your ferret up holing the top up in a 'scruff' and supporting the bottom. Note- ferrets, like the Dachshund, has an elongated spine and is given to spinal problems if their too much stress and strain. Anyway, while holding your fuzzy in the scruff, say 'No!' in a loud, clear tone and then blow air puffs in their face. The air puffs are what ferret mommy would do and they hate it while not receiving any damage or abuse from this action. I have successfully trained 9 ferrets to never bite and one of them was even an abused rescue! Though I would not recommend taking on a rescue unless you have had a few years of successful ferret relationships. Hope this helps! Love!!!!

I also used to have a rabbit that we got because first it was my cousin’s and they impulse bought him so they ditched him at my grandma’s house and she’s allergic so he ended up at my house and lived to be 13 and we sadly had to put him down. The minimum free roam time for ferrets is at Least 4 hours a day according to the national ferret association, not 2-3. A lot of owners actually suggest 6-10 hours of free roam time, including sleeping in other spots if they so choose. 2 to 3 hours is simply not enough
@jessicaangell46533 жыл бұрын
4 plus hours is recommended but for situations where they have large enclosures and toys to show enrichment, the hours out can be minimised if wanted/needed. This is usually in rescues or shelters. We have a 12ft by 7ft by 4ft avery in out garden which have converted for the ferrets, meaning that if we wish we could reduce the time spent out.

I've been obsessed with these guys since 2013. Now I finally got two. Started with one since some people said it works. It didn't, he was crazy stressed out. So I got his brother 2 days later, they still recognized each other. They are raw fed + high quality kibble and occasional high meat content cat food. I'm not into keeping them in cages so mine have a ferret room and get toilet trained. The room doesn't smell bad at all, not even the toilets/puppy pads unless they are left dirty for over a day. I haven't really heard of Marshall's Ferrets aside from: Breeding factory that sells them too young, spayed and with scent glands removed... Doesn't exist where I'm from. Still most of our ferrets are terribly bred. Waardenburg Syndrome left and right. Since breeders here are obsessed with crazy colors. One of mine is deaf as well. I personally don't see them as hard to train. It's like a Shiba Inu, you have to be in their mindset. The best way to get into this is by watching their social interactions. Another good reason to have more than one. Mine are used to harnesses and I wouldn't mind letting them meet certain dogs/cats outside. Depends on both the animal in question as well as the ferrets mood. I wouldn't say they're fragile animals, quite the opposite. Judging by both my crazy noodles, pushing each other off of the bed, ramming their heads into everything while wardancing and getting accidentally stepped on their paws on occasion. (With socks or Crocs, so no full weight on the ferret!) As well as other ferrets I've met that pulled quite the same stunts. Never heard of the bathing stuff. If they've rolled in poop then warm quick shower and that's it. Soap is only needed if it's a vet problem like fleas ect. Mud is going to dry and crumble off with a few pets/shakes. So yeah, my experiences.

The other ferret he loved with was Neo and he wanted so desperately to eat remote buttons, which they will get off and swallow, so it was a chore keeping all pens and remotes away from his tiny fingers. 😊.

Fantastic information 💕 I just rescued a Marshalls ferret. Unfortunately I am very aware of their fate as I have had 3 in my distant past. They all got insulinomas. My goal is just to give her as much love as I possibly can and enjoy the time she has left on this Earth 💕

So sweet :-) My current ferret friends are Murphy, (male age 7,) and Sweet Dee (female, age 6,)...their sister Ursula passed earlier this year at 6. As far as I know, they were all from the same breeder, and I think Ursula and Murphy were from the same litter; they have been the sweetest gang ever. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I have to add, regarding your comment on ferrets not having a homing instinct; my first ferret, Elmo, once got out during winter in MN (we lived outside of town on a farm as well,)...I thought he was a goner for sure with all the other animals both domesticated and wild close by :-( Though sure enough, the next day, his little adorable little white face, blending with the snow all around him, was practically pressed against our sliding glass door. I was beside myself with joy that my little boy had found his way back after almost a full day outside! (I'm not saying this is because he KNEW where home was, maybe it was simply the warmth that drew him back?) Either way, at a young age, it showed me that ferrets are INCREDIBLY unique and strong, beyond what most would expect from such adorable dopes.

I owned ferrets for over 10 yrs and I learned quite early on get a young ferret never an adult so you can actually train them. Once they are adults you can pretty much forget about training them. Yes they are smart but they also get set in their ways.. I also would say train them to use a cat liter box is far more beneficial to both the ferrets and your home in terms of odor and hygiene versus letting them poop in their home. I had a ferret room where they had cages but were allowed to free roam and there was a cat litter box in the room . Ferrets don't like to poop in their home but if they have no choice will so allowing them to free roam in a ferret proofed room with a cat liter box is far better situation.. . One thing to watch out for also they are not that robust. Never let them play in a room with couches and recliners or any furniture they can climb up on. The reason is they maybe smart but they are a little dumb with furniture and will jump off it and a large portion of the time they will hurt themselves . I had one of my first ferrets break their right front forearm from jumping off my couch and their bones are small so if they do hurt themselves it will be almost impossible to repair so its best to keep them away from furniture all together.

Also, change in behavior (the nipping) and other "aggressive" behaviors can be from Insulinoma. Loss and thinning of hair in the coat also is a symptom. it's unfortunately very common, especially in Marshalls.

Random person: what’s it like owning ferrets? Me who has 5: do you want kids? Cause that’s what it’s like. It’s like having a 3 year old that refuses to listen but can multiply and get into everything. That’s what it’s like. Random person: can’t be that bad. They hear the stories and they have shock pikachu face.

Hey! I was just wondering when feeding ferrets, do you have to separate them and feed them in separate bowls to make sure they’re getting the correct nutrients? I’ve worked with them for over 90 hours at college but I’m still learning about how to keep them as pets (I’m considering rehoming a pair soon) xox
@sunlightmetal92323 жыл бұрын
It depends on how your ferrets are like and if you're feeding raw. With raw I'd suggest monitoring their intake and if one seems to be stealing then I'd feed seperate / feed more lol
@kayleighbennett49763 жыл бұрын
@@sunlightmetal9232 thank you so much! I will be feeding raw so do you think it would be safe just to separate them for feed times when I get them?
@sunlightmetal92323 жыл бұрын
@@kayleighbennett4976 You could do that but I know people who feed theirs together just fine, so you can try and see if that works first? :) saves work and cleanup lol

"They know what no means, but just don't care." Literally made me laugh out loud! I love ferrets, but I've come to conclusion the I'm better at just volunteering with a rescue who has them and teach people about them, than keeping them for my own.
@PetMama13133 жыл бұрын
Same. I won't say never to a ferret, because maybe some day. Just definitely not for a long time. More likely would pet sit or volunteer at a rescue with them, or foster some. At this point in time, I'm more in favor of simply fostering most animals rather than committing to the care of one. Rather help buy them time to find a good home than be stuck with one for life, and responsible for all their care. I am fine with caring for pets, just on a temp basis at this point. So therefore, fostering, volunteering or pet sitting is the best option for me right now.
