When I was introducing my two ferrets to each other, I put my new girl in the play pen and my boy on the outside. After a few minutes of passive behavior, I took her out of the pen so they could be face to face in a supervised environment. I found them sleeping in a pile under my bed two hours later
@vickyrutherford36952 жыл бұрын
Be very careful with that kind of intro. My boy ended up biting my kit's nose when he went up to sniff the bars. But it completely depends on the ferret Bigby hates kits with a passion. Love his younger brother Wampa now though.

@@jambalam9736 Yeah some are just like that that my brother's ferrets welcome newbies without problem. My girl wasn't to bad just wanting to play and a bit rough. One of the scariest things was introducing one of our female fuzzies, who has anxiety, to our dominant female. There were so many times we wanted to step in when they fought for dominance, and it took 7 months before the females felt comfortable enough to snuggle and play. Patience is key! Our vet told us that it seems to be a female thing 🤣
@bobandersi52452 жыл бұрын
That gives me hope! I have a new female rescue and my older female is very dominant and they fight every time they're introduced but it's only been about a month.
@Emzotic2 жыл бұрын
Oh Totally!!! This is why I’ve only really ever kept males. They tend to be more laid back. The females are much more mission-driven, and always seem to be more dominant!

@@bobandersi5245 Aww good luck to your girls! I totally understand that feeling of discouragement when they don't get along right away. I thought mine would never get along, and I wanted to give up after a couple of weeks. We tried swapping blankets and made sure each had their own "safe space" that they could go to when they needed it. In the end, they just managed to sort it out on their own. I hope your girls are a little less stubborn than mine!

No, I think your approach with introducing ferrets is ideal. Having them in the same area but unable to get to each other allows the new ferret to smell more familiar. It also allows the new animal to get used to being in another territory without feeling like they're going to be randomly attacked. Animals retaliate if someone smells a little too different and it becomes overwhelming regardless of where the meeting happens. Take horses for example. A nurse mare's poo is sometimes rubbed on an orphan foal to help the mare not reject the foal, so I think it's safe to deduce the same thing.

the no blood no foul rule is also a great one for rats! when i was first introducing my 2 little guys to my older boy i was incredibly stressed out from the sheer amount of squeaking, but there was no real harm being done and now they're all inseparable :] it turns out my younger boys are just incredibly dramatic lmao

When I had ferrets, thankfully it went super easy (barely an inconvenience) when introducing a new ferret. I had two ferrets (brother and sister) for about two years when I decided to get a third ferret (another male). I kept the new baby ferret away for a couple of weeks and bonded with him, then started working on introducing him to the other two. I introduced him into their space, with some of his stuff around, basically as you did. The female, as predicted, told him off. Only once though, which was surprising since she was a pretty dominant female (she hated everyone after she was spayed, but loved me to pieces, so... mission failed successfully?). That same day, the two older ferrets put themselves back to bed after play time, and the new little one followed them in and they all slept in a pile together. I kept an eye on them, since the new guy was still pretty small, but they were good. Sometimes, fuzz-butts know how to behave. ^_^

I like to see the difference in their characters here. Same is true for all animals I've ever had to introduce, it all comes down to what the personality of all parties is and you have to go off of that how fast or slow you do the introduction. I've seen it with cats before, we had an extremely related cat that was 7 when we got a little formerly feral kitten of about 4 months or so. He sniffed her and then he just accepted that she was there. She hissed and took a few hours to get close again on her own. Two other cats also a male already in the house and introducing another male of about 3 months, baby wanted to play and snuggle the bigger boy about 9 months older than the other one hissed and wanted nothing to do with the new addition to the household. Took about two weeks to calm down. Also had to introduce rats, guinea pigs and bunnies before and some other animals at a rescue. Always very exciting and a bit scary.

I just couldn't get with the "no blood, no pee, no poop, no fowl" thing when I introduced my two ferrets. My older ferret (Babadook) would grab my younger ferret (Jynx) by the scruff and drag her all over the place like she was his teddy bear. Sometimes he would grab on HARD and refuse to let go. Poor Jynx would cry out and I just couldn't abide that. So I would open Babadook's mouth to release Jynx and stay between them for a while. I did have them play in a neutral space, but I made sure there were plenty of "safe spaces" in case one needed to hide out. Luckily it only took about a week for them to get used to each other and they are best buds now. Though Babs will still sometimes get very hyper and try to scruff her...but it doesn't happen often anymore at all.

My fav animals are ... Ferrets! Surprise. lol. I prefer the method you use for introducing pets to one another because I liken it to people getting stuck in an elevator together. You may not make friends, at first, but you get used to each other and at least respect one another... pets are the same. When it come to Adrenal issues, I have found that light therapy is also a great help along with vet care. Basically, when it's dark outside, put your ferret(s) in the dark inside - IE: Turn out the lights, mum! This has gone a long way to help my ferrets in the past.
