It's gonna be way less as what if estimates if we'll assume you are an evil sith lord. ie labor cost go way down when you enslave the workers. Can think of plenty of other ways to cut cost for a Sith Lord, hell perhaps you can even charge the deathstar bateries with some good old force lightning so you could save some on electricity costs aswell.

Have you ever looked at an ant colony and thought they may be just like us? Any species so advanced beyond us that they have figured out how to travel here and not die is more than that much different from us. Even if proxima centuri (the nearest Earth like planet) housed incredibly advanced alien life that could travel at the speed of light, it would take 1,500 years to get here. Space is full of radiation, so much that an astronaut who is in space for only a few months has a significant increase in chance for cancer. The best we could hope for is that we would be their pets... Because we would be so inferior to them as to be nearly invisible.

One question, how do you get on the Death Star in the first place? Like you cannot use planes or rockets (because rockets are very expensive and waste resources as if we didn’t use as much already). We would need tie fighters or x-wings.

The problem I've always had with the Death Star is There's not 1 bit of surface air traffic. Nothing. Any mega city in any Star Wars movie has surface traffic of some kind. A megalithic defensive platform of that size would centralize any military operations everywhere and would have massive ship yard and refueling capabilities. Even just in defense of the station. Simply using it as a single laser platform with no military escort or multiple purpose military deployment capabilities is foolish. Looking at it there's never any surface traffic even though it's the size of a small planetary military base.

The "lasers would just go through each other" realization has been around pretty much since the movie came out, but we also have some ideas for producing a temporary singularity by focusing high power lasers on a single point which looks similar to the first part. Obviously, that singularity is only going to be there as long as we're pumping energy into it with our death star, after which it will evaporate rapidly due to its small size. But the photon sphere can be used to collect high energy photons in the tight orbit around the black hole. This level of energy would explain why we can see the lasers. Carefully angling the lasers would then allow you to cause the black hole to evaporate at a controlled rate, shedding that laser energy in the direction you wanted. Why you'd want to do all this, I don't know, as all the energy used to make the miniature black hole could have just been pointed at the planet for better effect. But it would look something like the Death Star's superlaser up to the point of releasing the high energy light which would be blueshifted way outside the visible range.

I feel like if we did create a Death Star it should be used as both an artificial moon and as tool for terraforming. It could block sunlight for planets that are too close to the sun and it’s massive power output should be more than enough to change a planets atmosphere and create a stable climate. It could even generate a magnetic field to protect planets from cosmic radiation.

Not completely and certainly not the case for the Empire in SW. However a large number of the maintenance costs proposed are just silly when used in relation to a civilization capable of building a Death Star in the first place. Seriously, who cares about waste disposal when you can eject anything you can't just vaporize into space?

Let me start with this, A "weapon" or, as I would classify it, starship of this magnitude would be just as terrifying as it was beautiful as a platform. In the right hands, humanity could not only bring terrible consequences, but traverse the night's sky, and even prosper greatly, in a way that we never could imagine. A single use of such an incredible weapon would most likely be used in 2 scenarios... Scenario A: the net gain of resources would likely be so enormous, that you could use it multiple times and not even notice the economic impact. Scenario 2: there is a force, of planetary scale so powerful that human existence depends on it. Also, even without an antigravity device, scientists could at that point utilize the kinetic energy to fuel the ships on-board power systems for years. Providing light, heat, cooling, and maybe even fuel if there is a sufficient capacity for storage. I'd love to see an episode of "what if" that expresses this. People cling to the negative (rightfully) so much that it hinders our development at times. Maybe the BFG 10,000 from the Doom videogames would be more reasonable.

I'd use Venus as a test for the death star's destruction capability since it's slightly the same size as Earth, then I'd go to earth, negotiate with all the countries leaders telling then to hand over their territory to me, set the death star's power to really low so I don't destroy the planet, I would use the death star to make an example of the countries that oppose me, and those who fear me would hand over their territory, then I would create my own one earth government :)

Fear is not a good factor for politics. Trust, SERIOUS trust is the best way to get people to like you as a politician. If you want to do that, ask help from Kim Jong Un, he knows how to do it. Unless you break their trust then they will hang you.
